I read an interview with Jon Thaxton and he said he made the move up in weight to light welter as he felt he wasn't strong enough to compete with Billy Schwer and Colin Dunne (there was Michael Ayres as well at the weight); shows how strong the lightweights were back then.

Getting down to lightweight definitely affected his strength and stamina. I could tell the difference when sparring with him. He seemed stronger up at light-welter. I know it's only a few pounds, but at the lower weights it can make a real difference.

Smith wasnt really a banger in the Ams,he knocked Ryan out in the english semis as they was known then..Boxed Thaxton a couple of years after that(Thaxton was 18 i think)

i used to spar georgie smith as an amateur at canvey abc, his punches where very acurate and stung, his younger brother david was even better, they both could of been very good but they never had the 100% dedication it took to be the best.

Yeah it's ok mate, written word and all that, it can be very literal.

I swear I can remember him being interviewed by SKY, before one of his fights up at 147, probably was the McCreesh fight and he's sitting there being quite self effacing in his flat cap, talking about banging out people cos they were taking the piss out of his chin etc. My memory is amazing, sometimes it lets me down and this is what, well over 10 years ago and I've not seen it since. Like I say, I've got it on tape, along with 10-15 of his other fights. He was fun to watch.

I thought Hale was a mortal lock to bang him out.

Canvey had a some good boxers in the early 90s..I see his brother David box a few times(wasnt at his brothers standerd)

yer we had darren dainty, james gunn, the smiths, bradley smith, terry brocklebank, john martin, brett baker, and loads more, i won south east novice in 95 ! i think we won essex club of the year every year from 88 to 2001. good times
