Loved Wharton and how he fought ...watched him fight Eubank and Benn live...In Benns book he said Wharton was the hardest body puncher he eva faced..in fact in the book Benn said he was P!ssing blood for three days after their fight .

To be fair Henry was one of my favourite fighters growing up - what a warrior!

I knew someone would bring that up.As i have posted before,Harry Mullan at ringside only had a round between them and couldnt understand the fuss.Neither could the crowd,understandably considering it was very pro-Wharton.

Benn and Eubank in their respective books had Henry down as the 'hardest' man they had ever fought.Eubank actually seemed quite shocked by his toughness.

Yep.FW put in a huge bid to secure the Benn fight for London.Henry,as mandatory challenger did very well out of it.They really didnt fancy it being "up north".In any event,Wharton fans still vastly outnumbered Benn's.

Used to be a fan of Wharton's. I thought he might get a bit of a late career shine with that mooted match with Crawford Ashley but it didn't come off.

saunders is a natural but as been hamperd with injuries & it looks like he dont have the best diet.

I know he's only shadow boxing in this video, but his movement and grace have come on leaps and bounds since it was made.

If he keeps his mind on the job, and his hands stay ok, he'll be a world champ at middle or super middle I reckon.

Wharton related to my cousins on my mam's side. I lived down Leeds for a few years and the respect he has throughout Yorkshire is something else. Went on the drink with him once in York and he gave me a black 'Hard & Fast' training top after that. Said it was the top he trained for the Eubank fight in. It still has pride of place in my wardrobe. He's a proper mush for a kekker.

I am more than sure in one of those fights he was down ..maybe two

No,just the once,and it was more of a case of being caught square on flat footed.He got caught with a backhander.If you watch the Benn fight,i think it was the eighth,he got hit with a shot that would have felled a tree but never budged.Even going back to the ams,he was stopped as a junior but never down and only then by future big names in international bouts.
Galvano never even shook Henry,he fiddled him about for a few rounds and then walked on to a peach left hook and it was lights out.Great night for us as it took place in York,too.

Before Henry hit with the big left he hit him with the hardest body hook (left) I can remember seeing. It was like watching Henry Cooper; I'd tried at boxing myself as a youth and only then realised what it meant 'to put everything' into a punch. Wharton was an absolute wrecking machine at the weight; only the very top men could go with him. What a fighter, chin, heart, power and real commitment. A really good fighter he was.

I said earlier in the thread the only count he took in his career was against Nardiello.I was ringidde at both.

Henry never set that page up,mate.He wouldnt have a clue and its not his style at all.That is his son though,he has a few,i went to his son's supposed first bout a few months back but it never materialised.Its happened a few times now as is common in the amatuers.All his sons are good kids who have been training a while but Henry wanted to wait until they were 15 before letting them compete.I think they are hard to match,'Wharton from York' puts off a few matchmakers.Ron Hopley posting on that page is probably Henry's best boxing pal and runs a gym in Ripon.He had a few as a pro,Ron and benefited from Henry's great run in the Yorkshire region.There was no pressure on any of the other lads to sell tickets in the early days as they were all gone as soon as Henry's mam got them!Even at his sons potential amateur debut there were a good few there.

Must be difficult for the boys; a lot of added expectation and pressure. Henry Wharton was a superb domestic (and european) level fighter; he would've ruled for years if he'd have not gone for the world.
