I'm no expert on Pinto, but I'm struggling to see that analogy. Poor mans Tommy Hearns maybe
Crude swinger (no jabs) with no defense is what I remember of Pinto. Cotto completely smashed him, made him look so amatuerish.
Yeah you're right, I remember now. He was a 'bit' wild and a BIG banger

Like mcguigan he was almost done by the time he actually won the title due to varying reasons . Obviously mcguigans issues were different (cccunt manager, subsequent screwjob in vegas, tragic death of father, health issues with daughter, skin cuts).....drink,binge drinking, weight problems, too many years defending wbu title did hatton and he was past his prime when he lost at the end.

allegedly made his fighters money for easier fights in those days of course it was 2006 when he had his road to damscus moment and started promoting tougher matchups

Quality fighter but his career will always be tainted for
Never giving Stephen Smith a rematch.

A true British great who did wonders for Boxing both in and out of the ring.It will be a long time before we see someone with his popularity again. Its a myth they all came along from Football.I went to early career Hatton fights where he had sold no more than the other undercard lads.He made his name with his exciting style, engaging(at the time) personality, and being bloody good.I always said the Tyson-Francis undercard fight turned a lot of casuals on to Ricky. He looked brilliant that night and live on ppv as well.

True, but what about the likes of Cotto, Mosley, etc - these are fights I would have loved to have seen.

More popular than he deserved to be, really. Mega-star appeal with decent ability, and capable, but well short of being an all time great.

A mega fight with Witter would have been wonderful, but it seems Ricky didn't choose that path. Shame.

Benn, Eubank will always be remembered for fighting each other, which is how it should be.

Ive got to say it seems mad to me that anyone feels that Ricky could not have done any better had his training and lifestyle been sorted out. Mad. Each to his own.

Looking at his career, it can't really be said that he really beat anyone of any great note. Tszyu, for sure, was a great victory, but it wasn't a peak Tszyu. He faced some good opponents after that, but in his two mega-fights he lost so badly.

Nobody of any note is a bit of a stretch isn't it.

Tszyu, Castillo, Malignaggi all excellent wins

I do agree with what you are saying Long term, but the two fights in which he seemed to do things right - he ended up losing. I still maintain though that he did his best that he could vs Mayweather - it wasn't a shameful performance. I think that was Ricky at his best. However, he seemed much more "relaxed" when he could have his fry up in the morning etc and that had a psychological impact on his displays.

Tszyu was a good win, but perhaps Tszyu was a toucgh past it- but fair enough, a good win. A prime Tszyu might have been different.

Castillo was good, too, but not an all time great. Malignaggi, I dunno, I don't rate him that highly.

But fair enough- these are notable wins- just not the very best, in my opinion. And to be a great, you have to fight and beat some of the best.

No-one was saying Tszyu was past it before the fight.

He destroyed Sharmba Mitchell in 3 rounds the fight before.

Revisionism if people try and dampen Hatton's win over KT IMO

A Ledge, who was great for boxing! he beat world class opposition in an exciting manner. I for one wish he and the Preacher never split, i think he'd still be boxing now. A great career which brought great times for him and all of his fans, definately will be remembered as a top fighter.

Hatton was 5-1 on to beat Zoo.

I'll never forget how lost Hatton looed after the 1st round against Pac. Getting rid of Graham was not the right thing to do.

An all-time favourite of mine though.

No, I didn't actually. Here Hatton admits he was at those odds;

"Hatton said, “I was written off at the start when I first won this title from Kostya Tszyu, which seems a lifetime ago now. I think I was the 5-1 underdog then so I’m used to being in this position again.”. "

Ricky was a very good fighter, but not a great one. He scored several wins over top ten fighters, bagged titles in two divisions, and was the top dog at 140 for years. I always found him likeable and thought he was enjoyable to watch in the ring. Ricky gets a lot of stick for not fighting Witter, but I think he would have dominated fight. On the downside, aside from Kostya he didn't beat anyone who is relevant in a historical sense (not counting shot Castillo) and he lost to the two "great" fighters he faced.

Me and Ricky himself thought it was 5-1, if you believe otherwise, prove it.

Hatton was best priced 2/1 against Tszyu in the days leading up to the fight. I'm a betting man and I remember it well because I advised a friend against backing him.
