Hooky, do you not find it refreshing that a fighter is seeking to avenge his only defeat for which he has been criticised and taunted about for nearly two years? Fair enough, Vera isn't world level but Leonard is probably right - Lee is probably waiting for the winner of Sturm vs Macklin, preferably Macklin.
But he's not arguing that point, he's taking issue with the claim that a fight with Vera will get him ready for the elite. A point which surely no-one can dispute?
Yep, I missed Hook's point. I do agree that Vera isn't and shouldn't be the final stepping stone to prepare for a title shot. I'm the same as most, I still don't think Lee is ready to take on the likes of Pirog, Sturm etc. nevermind Martinez. Maybe this time next year we can talk about it.

As has been said many times before, however, this type of matchmaking shows us how little faith Lee's people have in his abilities, unfortunately.

no this is standard fare form this boring repetitive biased individual.
Sends out a few hooks claiming to be sarcastic then through subsequent posts it actually becomes apparent he isnt joking at all.

give an idiot enough rope and all that.

I expect to get into this type of argument with the dross over on ESB, but I hoped that due to the level of intelligence and knowledge of the average poster on here that at least each thread would contain reasoned discussion as opposed to your usual personal abuse.

If you have an aversion to all things Irish, or Andy Lee, or even just me, please just dont reply to those topics or posts - I assure you I shant look for any of the multitude of interesting additions that you bring to the forum! :TU:

Could do with less of the drama!

one suggest with your supposed superior intellect (by the way those who tend to claim this are anything but) to those over at ESB then perhaps you should stop making threads worthy of of aforesaid site.

You posted a ridiculous thread so you got the answers you were looking for.

Dont go on the wind up then moan when folk call you on it. Seems you like to wind folk up then dont like ti when they front you on it.

If insinuating that you are an idiot via way of well known phrase is too much for senstive disposition I suggest you go follow knitting you sensitive little flower.
You sure like to dish it out but dont it seems care to be on the receiving end. Fair is fair....

I dont have an aversion to the irish my grandfather was irish, is that an allegation fo racism? Be careful.

What I do have an aversion to is one eyed and biased opinion which is then posted about their favoured fighters solely due to nationality.
.
For someone who doesnt "like the drama" as you put it, you seem to like to have the last word.

anyway enough from me, enjoy yourself wont you.

I'll ignore all the superfluous crap that you witter on about and attempt to talk about boxing.

I support and follow Irish boxers! Is that a crime? I am biased in my support for them, I am not biased in my opinions or estimation of their attributes.

Can you point out what exactly I have said about Lee here that you consider biased because you keep saying it.

Without getting involved in yer little war of words, there was an obvious play on sarcasm in both the thread title and the opening post. I would have thought the playful dig at Bennie would have given it away. We need to campaign for sarcasm smileys. I'll PM John Shep now to fight for our rights :DD

Thing is though Deno, if Bennie came back with something, would it have been taken in jest? I thought it was amusing myself, but I expected the reaction it got and I suspect the op did too. And you can't just say well dont read the threads, its why we log on here. Equally, I think op has every right to bang the drum for his man without being hammered every time, but its natural that if you put a little bait on the post, someone is going to bite. I don't actually mind it when its about boxing though, as it is here.

For what its worth, I think the biggest difference in opinion here is matchmaking rather than Lee's attributes. Thats progress :TU:

Nothing beat fight experience no matter what level of opponent, Im more a reader than a poster on this forum but I have read so much bull about Lemieux and Kirkland over the past couple of years and both got KOd in there last fights. Lee is a genuine contender in the middleweight division. Flaws? yes of course but the criticism he has received on this forum really does annoy me. Oh and Lee has no intention of fighting Anthony Fitzgerald anytime soon
Right, but would it be that difficult for him to fight a regular middleweight who has won a fight in the last two years? Fighting a living punching bag does nothing to improve a fighter. One of the reasons why David Lemieux lost his last fight was because he had fought too many of the Bunema punching bag types. You mention that Lee will "iron out a few of the faults of the McEwan fight," and I would like to know how Lee is do that against an opponent who is completely overmatched and will not offer even 1/10 the pressure McEwan did. You also say that nothing beats fight experience no matter what the level of the opponent, so going by that logic 48 fight veteran Tye Fields is one of the most experienced fighters in boxing. Would you agree that Tye Fields is one of the most experienced fighters in boxing? Probably not.

The fact of the matter is that it would be a lot easier to please people if Lee's opposition in these fights wasn't so horrendous. No one is expecting Lee to take on world ranked contenders each time out, but there is no reason he should be fighting a completely shot junior middleweight who hasn’t fought in almost two years, losing to a nobody in that bout. You're right in saying that Lee is a genuine contender, and a genuine contender has no business facing these types of opponents on a regular basis.

You won't find me criticizing Lee for fighting Vera, but I think Lee needs to be regularly (more than once a year) fighting better opponents than Shuler, Sipos, Fedotovs, Lowry, Walker, Bunema, Thiam, Cook, etc. Although he was the favourite against McEwan, for the most part Lee struggled greatly; perhaps, like Lemieux, this was because he had been fighting too many bums before. I simply think Lee will benefit by regularly taking on tougher opposition than he has become accustomed to. A bout with McEwan and a Vera rematch within the period of one year would represent progress on this front, so it looks like Andy might be on the right path.

From Lee's point of view I think he needs to banish the demons that were created when he lost to Vera. It definitely knocked him back in his career and affected him mentally. Personally I still don't think he has fully got over it, he took a lot of stick for it and I think if he took the rematch and won it would boost his confidence. From a ranking point of view, it won't do a lot but in the long run it could be a benefit.

:TU: What the Vera fight will be a good gauge for is how far off/near he is in terms of graduating to that level, rather than being indicative of him actually belonging at that level, if you see what I mean.

Great post. The McEwan fight alone is surely proof of how Lee's diet of stiffs prior to that encounter left him woefully unprepared rather than kept him 'ring sharp'.
