And Smith hit Simpson hit the back of Simpson's head over and over again whenever they tied up. A point from one guy for hitting the back of the head would mean a point from the other---both guys were doing it.

I cant think of anyone else who has lost 8 fights at British level being "unlucky".

Very close fight but you make your own luck , as simpson says he had him in round 8 blah blah, if he had him in round 8 then he should have put it beyond doubt and went for the stoppage rather than sitting back(which he did do as he had plenty of time in the round).

When a guy continually has decisions go against him in fights that could have gone either way he is unlucky. Maybe Simpson could have done more, but the reality is that even without giving the extra effort you are talking about he did enough to win both Smith fights (and some of his other lossess) on several people's cards, yet he didn't get either of the verdicts. I would definitely call that unlucky.

At the end of the day it was a very close fight. Could have went either way but O'Conners scorecard shows that Simpson didnt have much of a chance of winning anyway. Effing disgarace i dont think there were 6 clear rounds between them never mind to one fighter. Smith is a spoiler and not even a very effective one. John simpson is and prob always will be one of the unluckiest men in british boxing. Hope he gets a bit of a luck soon another title shot cant be far away.

The man's just battered Martin Lindsay and is a true warrior, and Smith has been getting slack for holding on.

Swifty took the war to John early on and Simpson was doing his fair share of clinching then. It's understandable that Stephen would hold on during the later rounds, the lad is still a kid in the pro game and he was fighting a machine.

It will be interesting to see who Smith fights next. I'd imagine it will prob be Lindsay. He's came through 2 fights with Simpson and the experience will stand him well.

Stephen set out like a rocket and looked quality at the start. I'm sure anyone who ends up doing twelve rounds will either Simpson will be forced to hold many a time, that or lose anyway.

It's scary to think what a 20/30 fight Swifty could have done to your boy.

To be honest mate i though Stephen was harder to hit the first time in Glasgow,I take nothing away from Stephen i didnt think hed stay with john as long as he did, but he struggled with 12 rounds imo but hopefully will only get better.Yes he looked great in the 1st round but its a 12 round haul that matters and overall john should have got the nod imo

I never score rounds for fighters that grab, maul and look to nick rounds by smothering. I still can't believe people even thought it was close. After he blew himself out early Smith hardly landed a telling blow whereas John was landing crisp clean shots throughout. The ref should have taken points from the spoiler but instead just allowed it. I think it's the only reason Smith didn't get stopped.

I give Smith credit for being very strong in a clinch and being able to walk Simmo backwards while clutching but aside from catching John cold and off balance early he was outpunched and outgunned.

I really don't look forward to smiths next fight as he has a boring, annoying style to watch.

I hope John gets a fight with someone who comes to do battle next time, then we can see another great performance from him.

I just spoke to my Dad about the fight and he scored it by one round to Smith so I stand corrected.

The first result was bad enough, but this time Simpson won it clearly for me. Yes, I'd agree Simpson is the unluckiest boxer in British/Commonwealth title fights.

John was well and truly ripped off, but at least he got to have his say after the fight. Not much consolation, but at least he got a bit off his chest.

at the time i was as mystified as the rest about the scorecard.

But

there were maybe 9 close rounds in the fight, if a certain style is favoured by a judge it is easy to make a card appear more lopsided than the fight.

Both guys fought their hearts out in what was a very good scrap, but i dont think it was a robbery and it was a fair result. Smith being called a spoiler now for holding a bull like Simpson? Hardly he did what he needed to do to win the fight.

Simpson has been very unlucky but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Some have suggested he's approaching world class. He isn't. I'm a huge Simpson fan and think he won both fights, but the simple fact is that he rarely decisively beats anyone near the top of domestic level. He robbed against Williams and the Matthews fight was debatable. Every other loss has been fair enough, including the two defeats to Smith (which I think he won). He's billed as a pressure fighter but has little power, average handspeed and consistently gets his shots off second. Alot of the time he fights more like a counter puncher.

I'm not having a dig here, he's my favourite domestic fighter and my previous posts bear that out. I'm just saying that realistically he's at his absolute peak and couldnt decsively beat a relative novice in Stephen Smith, or Paul Appleby for that matter.
