I think 99% of the fans realize a belt means sweet F/all, it's the champion that makes the belt these days, not the other way around.

It's fair to say that Vic was easily top 3 at Bantam, i have no problem saying that Vic won a title at the weight.Nor do i have a problem with Manny or Hatton or Wladimir or Pascal claiming that they were and are champions in there division for winning that belt.

manny won the lineal/undisputed championship at light welter. The ibo belt meant nothing

So whats that belt look like, and who else holds it.I know what it is, just no one remembers the lineal championship, just the IBO promotion that night.

what does it look like? The ring belt . Anyway this is getting old. Shall we just look forward to what should be a great fight. Has it actually been confirmed yet or is it just talk at the moment?

The Ring Magazine title was on the line, and many people believe that is the most important title in boxing. The fact that the IBO title was up for grabs was hardly mentioned in the lead up to the fight.

Ring used to give belts to undisputed champions in Nat Fleischer's day. The reputation of Ring has gone downhill since Nat's death in 1972.

Mate i know what the ring belt is, as stated in my previous post, i'm just saying that nobody really knew about it and people could see the promotion as the IBO strap, his record states it was for the IBO title, not the ring belt(well thats what people will see in 20 years.)


Just saying in 5 years you'll have come around like i did with the WBO.

One example or just a few examples is not enough to prove that a particular title should be considered a major one. As previously mentioned, Roy Jones was the WBF champion at the acme of his career and the WBF title was on the line in several of his fights, but I'm sure everyone will agree that winning a WBF title doesn’t make someone a major world champion. The quality of an organization’s champs needs to be looked at as an aggregate, and it simply cannot be said that the IBO world champs meet or exceed the WBC, WBA, and IBF champs in this regard.

I did some research on 5 of the 9 fighters who currently hold IBO world titles. Four of them--Khurtsidze, Baysangurov, Munyai, and Buthelezi--are not ranked in the top ten of their division by The Ring or Boxing Monthly (all of the other major champs in these divisions are), and Oosthuizen only recently landed in the top ten of The Ring rankings, where he sits below every major titlist. These five IBO world champs don't even have a spot in the top 15 of the fightnews independent rankings (all of the "big 4" champs do), and it is clear to me why this is the case. The best opponent Oosthuizen fought was Issac Chilemba, a fringe contender at 175 who was apparently unlucky to get only a draw; Khurtsidze was defeated by probably the worst champ at 160, WBA interim belt holder N'Dam N'Jikam; Baysangurov was knocked out in 5 rounds by the weakest champ at 154, Cornelius Bundradge; Munyai lost two fights ago to a mediocre WBC silver champion (I don't even consider silver belts world titles); and according to BoxRec, Buthelezi has defeated only one opponent inside the top 65 of his division.

While the IBO has strong champs in four divisions (all but one of whom currently hold distinctions from other sanctioning bodies), the overall caliber of their belt holders is low vis-a-vis the big four. The proliferation of titles has indeed gotten out of control, but within this sea of titles there is a gradation of quality and credibility, and in my opinion the IBO is at best 5th place in these regards. Good minds can disagree though, and I can understand why it is often argued that the IBO should join the club of major world titles.
