Don't know 'Funtime' personally but had a drink with him once after a GB v Romania international down London and he was cushty, along with Big Pricey and Swifty Smith. Am pals with Brad Saunders and he speaks very highly of Gavin. Decent lad, likes a laugh and DEFFO not up his own arse. He's full of confidence obviously after making Derek Bilton's fabled Sporting Life 'pound-for-pound' list and why shouldn't he be? One of the most naturally gifted fighters Britain has produced since Naz. He'll do the lot. And he's taking Woodhouse to school...

yeah i wasnt happy with some of the reporters questions towards me they seemed disrespectful and talked down to me i felt like asking them how many times have they stepped threw the ropes and risked there reputations but i knew the answer, ive never said im the greatest fighter in the world but i think i deserve the same amount of respect as any other fighter whether ive been a footballer or not but im not gonna let it get to me, im training hard and lookin forward to july the 16th, as for farnell i grew up watching and admiring him as a fighter but as they always say your best off not meeting your heros as they always turn out not you think they are and in farnells case it is a prime example the man is not what i thought he would be, like i said in the press conference july 16th im coming to win

If Gavin wasn't the celebrated amateur and we had to judge him purely on his professional performances to date, would everyone be waxing quite so lyerical about him, or is it just because he posts on the forum? I don't get it, and certainly don't get why people are labelling Frankie as a future world beater just because he's beaten Michael Lomax and Young Mutley.
I'm sure Frankie's a lovely guy, he certainly does come across as being down to earth in his posts, but that aside I'm struggling to understand the clamour. He massively disappointed against Mutley, never got out of second gear, no urgency, lacked pop (a criticism which seems to have genuine gravitas), and is yet to settle on a weight division.
Sure, he'll probably beat Curtis but I doubt it will be that easy. Woodhouse has been selected as a PR job to make Gavin look good, for the same reasons that Mutley was. That alone suggests something different to me about Britain's 'can't miss' future world champion. Given Frankie's supporters on the forum, I find it difficult to judge him objectively and almost feel I've been watching something different when viewing his pro fights to date.
I'm just bracing myself for more OTT comments if Gavin disposes of Curtis easily. If he doesn't, and Curtis lasts to the final bell, I'll be intrigued to read people's views afterwards.

You came off very well in the presser Curtis, handled yourself well despite some of the reporters trying it on.
As I've said I can't see anyway you'll win but I know you're up for this so here's hoping for a good fight. No shame in losing to someone of Frankie's class.

Frankie Gavin has very decent ring craft but he isnt Superman and doesnt carry a real dig. Curtis needs to get on him and not give him a minute's rest in order to have a chance.
Definitely not mission impossible for Curtis though.

I know a guy who boxed him and said he was first class. He even give my pal his robe and phone number and said to ring him if he needed anything.

I've met Frankie and he's a proper sound lad, as is Arnie.
Some of the questions asked to both were pretty shit to be honest, on Curtis's side they were saying he's ''the ex-footballer'' but it's not as if he's gone around picking on low level journeymen or Eurobums and smacking them about for a round or two then calling himself world class..... whereas for Gavin it's either ''world amateur champion'' or the poor showing against Mutley.
To me it's the ideal fight for both. Curtis gets his big opportunity, and Gavin gets an opponent that won't just fall over or get on the bike - may the best man win.
I can understand why people are slightly sceptical about the footballer becoming a boxer, but he's been at it for quite some time now...... it's not as if he chucked himself on the floor in the CL final then decided the next day to go all macho, is it

Hi guys just watched that back and wasn't impressed with the way I reacted I should of stayed out of it but what is done is done now. Got to say this I have big respect for Curtis and he looked well up for It and he has a top trainer in Glynn Rhodes who I to have a lot of respect for and I am training Frankie as though this is his toughest bout which it may well be.

Good fight, I'm looking forward to it. At least Woodhouse will have a go.
I thought the attitude shown towards Woodhouse from some of the two-bob journos(?) in that room was a fvcking disgrace. Instead of making smartarse comments and statements, why don't they actually spend five minutes thinking of something interesting to ask? How many times have we heard that 'happy to take the money though?' question/statement? Boring. Woodhouse's response was spot on.
The boxers will be earning their money on fight night. Some of the journo's in that room (or were they just boxing groupies?) should try earning theirs, lazy w***ers.

Just want to mention what an exciting value for money card this is
Ricky Burns vs Nicky Cook
Tony Bellew vs Ovill McKenzie
Frankie Gavin vs Curtis Woodhouse
plus some good prospects on undercard like Rocky Fielding, Ronnie Heffron, Paul Butler and Callum Johnson.

Fantastic attitude and don't ever let any one tell you that you can't win this fight especially on here. Was cool to see you stand up for yourself in that conference and you came across as someone who mean't business. I'm sure your team have looked at Frankie and coming up with a gameplan to exploit his weaknesses. It's like the plan Groves had against Degale to take away his jab which was key to everything James did and by doing that confused him. Not sure you caught Ringside a couple weeks ago but it was great how Adam Booth explained it at 3 minutes into this video

Some of the reporters were real tools. I thought Curtis handled the whole situation well, as it appeared like backs to the wall stuff with the reporters trying to get at him.
Ì do think he will come to win, but it is difficult to see it happening. Ok, Gavin had an "off night" against Mutley, but Mutley came to survive. Point is, I believe Gavin is a near perfect counter punch fighter and when someone goes at him and tries to win the fight, Gavin will show the full range of his skills.

Lots of boxers post here without people waxing lyrical about them, it's just that Frankie has an abundance of potential and people are interested to see if he can fulfill it. I’m surprised by what I’ve seen of Gavin’s pro career to date and no longer buy into the notion that a great amateur constitutes to a successful professional. I don’t see a master craftsman, he’s got decent variety but he could work the body better, he’s got a decent jab to set up his attacks but I expected him to be more relentless. Nor do I see him as a defensive genius either. I also think having an inexperienced trainer in Farnell in his corner is a mistake.
I suspected DeGale was overhyped based on his gold medal and dissection of Paul Smith and I don’t believe I’m far off the mark following his abject performance against Groves. Similarly, I’m still waiting for Gavin to justify the considerable acclaim he gets on this forum.
Gavin may have been a class apart as an amateur, but we’re talking four round fights. The gulf to the pros is huge. Most would concede that Frankie lacks power, this could really hinder him going forward. Even though he has beaten McDonagh, Lomax and Mutley easily he still doesn’t give the impression, at least to me, that he’s a future world contender in the making.
I’m surprised that more people are not questioning Gavin’s future potential to be honest. He does seem a nice lad and I do hope he gets to the top though.

More relentless? Thats the whole point of why Frankie has not shown his full range yet in the pro's. He is having to go looking for journeymen which is against his nature. When a relentless fighter comes at him when he moves up he can then show what made him the no 1 am. He is a master boxer on the back foot, not Ricky Hatton.
I’m surprised that more people are not questioning Gavin’s future potential to be honest. He does seem a nice lad and I do hope he gets to the top though.

Fair play to Arnie for coming on and holding his hands up.
But what the fornicate are they doing allowing idiots like that to speak in a press conf? No way they were journalists, just Gavins mates having a dig at Woodhouse. And the proper journalists were asking some shit questions too.
I thought both boxers put themselves across well in the conf, shame about everyone else in the room.
Woodhouse cant be faulted and I think whatever happens it will be a good tear up for as long as it lasts. Good luck to both of em, i'll be there on the night and cant wait.

In what way are you surprised? As an amateur, there was often questioning of Gavin's power and how it would translate to the pro ranks. After a few fights, many 'experts' stated that he was adapting remarkably well to the pro game. No he's not a one punch knock out artist, but he was never going to be... it was never part of the script. I don't think anyone expected that so it's not surprising that he's not knocking people out Naz-style. I see him winning fights early but wearing down an opponent over rounds, frustrating them and throwing lots of shots in the way that Cazalghe did for most of his career.
I never said that being a great amateur constitutes to a successful professional, Audley is a prime example. But it's indicative; amateurs who top world level often have a great chance of a successful professional career. There are no guarantees in boxing, one of the reasons it’s such an exciting sport, but when he's walking down and stalking his man, letting off punches and getting out of there without taking anything back, I see what I want to see. The old adage, hit and not be hit springs to mind. He's still learning the game and is still fighting on the domestic scene, he'll learn a lot before he steps up to world level. I really enjoy watching him ply his trade, which is all I can really ask for as a fan of boxing.
I take your point about De Gale, and credit where it’s due, you did say that before the event. However, I still don't think De Gale is over-hyped. I think he'll reach world level too and that a subjective one point loss to a fellow contender with a mastermind of a coach doesn't make him over-hyped imo. It just strikes me as a little reactionary to dismiss De Gale so prematurely, and I think he's far more in need of changing trainers than Gavin is at this stage.
Of course you're entitled to your opinion (which [for what it’s worth] I respect), but I'm just a bit confused as to why you can't see why people rate him as they do. Of course some go a little ott a times, but I get the impression that you're view is that he's nothing special, which I am at odds with, I think he’s a very special talent. The considerable acclaim is not without basis (as often happens with other prospects), but he has his sceptics too, both off and on this forum.
One thing I completely agree with you on is that he seems a nice lad and I hope he gets to the top as well.

I guess what annoyed me about the press conference was the genuine disrespect everyone was showing to Woodhouse, not just as a fighter but just basic human respect. Some of those 'questions' were just petty name-calling from so-called journalists. Woodhouse did brilliantly in that situation cos he didn't lose his cool and kept his DIGNITY, which was the most important thing when some others in that room seemed to not have any class.
Pathetic really and the immature sniggering between Farnell and Gavin just finished it off for me. At any point they could have turned round to the 'journos' and said come on that's a bit below the belt or whatever, but they just sniggered along like kids in a school class.
I'm sure Gavin is probably a nice lad to talk to, most people in boxing are good people when you get to know them, but the way he is conducting himself in the spotlight of interviews isn't really endearing me to him and that's all I have to go off as I'm not someone who knows him! There's confident and knowing you are good, I'm fine with that so long as it doesn't edge too far into arrogant territory, there's a fine line.
