Let's say the fight would have made it to the 10th. Roy would have been up 1, 3, and 4 points respectively on the three cards, also assuming he doesn't finish Griffin in the waning seconds of the 9th. Anyway, fighters who take a knee, such as what Griffin did, generally do not sweep the final rounds in a fight. Even if he had done so he would have walked out of there with a draw, barring him knocking Roy down or not. A far more likely scenario would have been Roy finishing the already fading Griffin. If not all he had to do was win one round out of three against someone who clearly was taking punishment, not much of a tough task the way the fight way going. I see no way Griffin would have won that fight besides the way he won it.

Both sides could make strong points as to whether why it should or should not have happened. I think it was a legit DQ but I completely understand the sentiments of those who don't agree with it. I don't feel strongly either way as to whether it should or should not have happened because it was an on the fence decision by the referee.

The important thing is there was an immediate rematch and while the record books show 1-1 for each man, there was a definite conclusion when all was said and done.

I agree. First fight with Griffin* was clearly his toughest fight pre-Tarver. Griffin gave him significant troubles before Roy finally started taking over, only to get DQ'd. Hopkins, who needed a few more years of development to become the legend that he has now become, lost clearly but still blunted Roy's ability to look great/win every round.

Its funny: Roy at his physical best was often criticized for not taking enough risky fights. Yet now that he is a shot fighter he has suddenly become quite stubbornly and foolishly risk-taking in his decision making. Shame he did not manage his career a bit differently before and after Tarver.

I have noticed this myself. Power of a condemned man, or his he just punch-drunk (some of his recent fighting decisions could support either notion)?
