All you nostalgics should relalise that even the look of this belt is a prime example of why this great sport is in decline & MMA is taking away the new younger demograph (and no matter what you say it's true) and leaving boxing behind.

I think that they should make all the belts in the world look modern ans constantly update them, no forward thnking is what is killing this sport yet you all prefer to sit in your cosey prisons hoping for the same meal everyday. ffs there's a world outside your window.
The past does not define who you are it mearly gives you a badge to pin your hangups on to.

The belt just looks....well.. woefull.
For new fresh young fighters? give them somethng cool not some old antique that isn't even cool in a retro way.
School kids should have a god at redisgning this belt. as the kids are more in touch with the next gen of boxers than we are.

I agree with IRLangie25 that the Lonsdale belt is by far the best Boxing belt in the world, it's just sheer class not at all like these lumps of fur and shiney tacky metal substitutes calling themselves (belts)

Just a note the great John Conteh did not win a Lonsdale belt out right, Lennox Lewis did, so did Henry Cooper who we all know won 3 out right.

Am not sure if Chris Finnegan won one out right although he did win 3 fights for the British Title, wpts 15 Eddie Avoth, wpts 15 Roy John and wpts 15 Johnny Frankham, boxrec does not say he won one out right although they do for both Lewis and Cooper, as I said Conteh did not win one out right and thats definite.

Makes you wonder what the eff the BUI are doing nowdays with their belts, None of them even look the exact same !, the only consistent feature is that their green, big and ugly.

The picture above however truly is a thing of beauty, and although I'm probably biased in this I think aesthetically it is more pleasing that the Londsdale belt. You could make a case for the old 9ct gold Lonsdale belt looking nicer ,it really is so much nicer than the current one, despite not being that drastically different. But the current one is ruined by the fact that Hugh Lowther really was one ugly muthafucka, and his big mug pretty much ruins the belt. Fair play to him for donating the original belts and all though.

The BUI are an absolute joke. They should in my eyes be disbanded and a new sanctioning body should be set up to govern boxing and MMA and that isn't run by the people that run the BUI.

My question is: is the belt they keep the one they won, or is a new one made for them? If they get a new one, does that mean that the Lonsdale belt you see on telly is incredibly old? Or do they make a new one every time someone earns the right to keep the old one?

And I suppose I may as well ask then - if that is true, whose belt has the longest history in terms of bouts until it was won outright?

Yeah it used to be if a fighter won 3 Birtish title fights... Example: Win the title and 2 defences.
But now it has been changed to make it more difficult... The fighter must win the title, then defend it 3 times before he keeps the belt.

(I prefer it this way).

I asked your first question to Hughie Russell and he said that the belt he had won, was the one that he kept... So he kept his won belts.


The Lonsdale belt you see on tv is realitively new (depending on when it was made) but a belt may be around of a good number of years (7-8-9 years) changing hands from fighter to fighter and only find a home when someone defends it 3 times and keeps it for good...

I honestly don't know, but I suppose you could check it by going through the British title fights records.

My guess would be: Carl Froch's belt.
When was there a Super Middleweight Londale Champion who kept the title at that weight before him?

THE LORD lonsdale belt is a historic & a prized coveted antique which is better then any other chintzy looking belt in the world :!:

maybe some prefer big eagles & WWF style belts.

A belt can be unattractive AND of high sentimental value, just as a belt can be attractive and of no sentimental value.

It's not like anyone takes him seriously. You can tell he knows nothing about boxing but has a lot of time on his hands. He's probably 40 and still at home.

The Lonsdale belt is worth more than it's weight in gold... (if you pardon the pun).
It's a symbol of boxing excellence and some very great fighters have held it in the past.

Certain sky scrapers are more 'beautiful' than certain cathedrals & castles. Again, aesthetics and history are different issues, although they can be linked in some respects (i.e. different designs, some of which are more attractive than others, were used in different periods). A building/belt may be considered prestigious due to its history, but a prestigious history does not equate to physical attractiveness.

If 'beautiful' was being used in a sentimental sense, then I would not have voted no; winning the Lonsdale belt is a tremendous achievement that every boxer should be proud of. However, it was perceived flaws in the belt’s physical appearance that were articulated in the post that inspired this thread (''I hate it…. it's simply ugly.''), so I don’t believe that the OP is using ‘beautiful’ in a sentimental sense.

I watch a show last week were they had two rare charles & diana gold coins but they melted them down as they were worth more as raw gold, it's dated and should be changed as its an ugly ugly bugger.
