Before fight to go over things. An he said NO standing 8 count.
So not sure why 8 count come into it
Hi Guys, there is a Simple answer to this, I was assisting as Supervisor for the entire event, not just the PABA title fight, there was to be no standing 8 count, but another Referee earlier, used the standing 8 count even though he was told not to, so once it was used, we decided it had to be used in all the prelim bouts simple as that, it's not ideal i know and not correct, but you cannot have a standing 8 in one fight and not another, it's all or nothing, i would have preferred nothing.
In NSW they DO HAVE a Standing 8 count in there rules, and it is used often, I have used it in NSW, but not in Victoria, there is no standing 8 count, we had NSW officials and to confuse them even more, they used Victorian rules, as i said, one Referee earlier in the evening simply forgot or decided to ignore my instructions and used the standing 8, so I decided we would have to use the standing 8, for every prelim fight, which we did, I then warned that same Referee not to use the standing 8 in the PABA title fight, which he did not because it only went just under two rounds.
Hope this clear things up, the event was a terrific for boxing in general, the Maxwell v Akaoula was a terrific fight, as was the main event, Tasmania certainly came out in droves to support Gealey and his team, approx 5000 people were there and everyone left happy.
Terrible shame about the PABA title fight, in my humble opinion, the fight should've been allowed to proceed, The Referee should have given the corner every chance to repair the cut and keep their fighter in the contest, they had the best cutman in Australia in their corner, in Brian Wilmott, plus when you consider all what both Jamie and Serge went through to get there, they both deserve every opportunity to win the fight.
I truly felt the fight was far from over and Yannick, while beaten in both rounds, was not out of the fight at all, there was still another 10 rounds to go, 2 rounds does not win you a championship fight, but i really did feel for Jamie who is an absolutel professional and a true sportsman, he deserves every accolade given.
I am presently working on a rematch, but the referee, by the letter of the law, broke no rule and he is entitled to halt the fight whenever he feels its right and to protect the fighter's welfare, and that's what he did, whether we like it or not, but i just felt Pittman deserved more opportunity.
Anyway, once every thing is sorted out, i will get on here and let you all know the outcome.
Regards
