Agree Trojans44 - rules are rules and they should be adhered to. Sure we get exceptions (many of them) but mostly they are treated as rule breakers and are suitably punished (e.g. the two example you mentioned ended up getting disqualified).... Sure you get the odd few that slip by (Chisora's attempt bite was blatant cheating, as was Joe Calzaghe admitting to intentionally hitting Hopkins low unprovoked in the 2nd just two of many examples) - in most cases those, these are caught and fighters are suitably punished.Trojans44 wrote:What an utterly shite argument. Boxers are professional sportsman competing in regulated contests. Participants have the right to expect fairness. Its not a fight to to the death on a estate somewhere!
However, Mayweather DIDN'T break any rules and for my money didn't break any unwritten rules - just how many times did Ortiz had to appologise....Mayweather didn't make any gestures asking for a hug, he didn't stick out his hand and then punch him (as Eubank did many times but he was a good escentric British fighter who potrayed himself as a Gentleman, so people forget or don't wish to criticise). Ortiz appologised once before the Cortez docked a point - Mayweather accepted the touch glove and didn't cheap shot him then..... Ortiz then after the point deduction chose to appologise again and touch glove... .again Mayweather didn't cheap shot him there and accepted the appology. Ortiz then approached Mayweather for a hug... Mayweather didn't demand a hug... the fight was back on... protect yourselves at all times... Ortiz didn't.
Okay, so Mayweather might have more killer instinct than someone like Lennox Lewis who refused to KO a defensless fighter (McCall) - but nobody would have questioned it had he just knocked him out.... thats really what Mayweather did - Ortiz refused to defend himself, and Mayweather made him pay.
