I used to defend him and defend him, but ultimately I cannot anymore.

That was a rediculous card - and luckily for him won't get repimanded cause the "right man won" - Team Lynes aint going to bother complaining.

We all condemmed the Norton vs Williams scoring. Steve Lillis scored it 10-2 Norton as a pundit and I think Bunce said the worst it could be was 8-4.... Two judges got it wrong that night - but 116-113 Williams was rediclous.... again you know whose card it was. I know there are lots in boxing breathing a huge sigh of relief that Norton's time has come to an end, but really (as much as he bores the punters) he should be given an immediate rematch.

A much more difficult fight to score was Cunnigham vs Hernandez. I will not criticise any card from that fight personally.... but there was an insinuation from the commentary team that the British judge (Howard Foster) got it right. Well, I think the commentary team need reminding that there was another British judge who thought Hernandez only lost 1 round!!!! Yep, you know who this was.

Its almost as if he has "lost it". He was a ref of such promise, for a long time he was my favourite ref - but its as if he has been worked too hard and needs a breather from it. Particularly with his judging.

I think I'm a bit like most people in boxing , in that we don't usually criticise our referees too much . They , on the whole , are very good up there with the best in the world . However , there comes a time when a situation simply can't continue . The Board should make Ian John Lewis ( incidentally a handy boxer in his day ) sit down with a panel of former refs and be asked to score each round . People must remember that without the knockdown he would actually have scored the fight 115-114 for Purdy !!! That's 6 rounds to 5 with one even .How anyone , and I mean anyone , could give 6 rounds to Purdy is just incredible .
The Board have now ,reluctantly , got to make a stand . Lewis must be suspended and ordered to undergo training. He must be required to sit at ringside and unofficially score fights and hand his results to the Board for consideration. I'm sorry for him but these scores are critical to the integrity of boxing, and leaves the sport open to claims of corruption .

Excellent post. Not a week or two goes by without this sort of thing at the moment in Britain. It's being allowed to damage the sport too much.
Nobody wants to use the word corruption but what else are people supposed to think after watching that?

What I will say in IJL defence is that often a fight can look very different depending where your sitting, whose fans you've got behind you, what corner your sat in.

Most of us watched the fight on Sky and listened to their observation that round after round purdy was been outboxed and whilst there is no question Lynes won the fight perhaps IJL values effort, aggression over skill and clean punching. Stupid as it may sound. I've got an amateur fight at home on VHS where the opponent literally didn't hit me once in three rounds. And I won a split decision. People like different things but it does seem unfathomable on the face of it.

It has become bad enough here that it now seems very hypocritical to criticise other countries scoring.

I also found it a bit strange when Ringside recently did a ten minute long segment entirely on IJL. It seemed very forced and completely pointless, this is after all the most maligned official in the country. I've seen world title challengers get less airtime from Sky.

There does come a point when you wonder how someone who has been involved in the game for so long can keep making the same mistakes. Let him referee, but surely someone has to stop him scoring!

FWIW, I don't believe there is any corruption among the officials at the highest level within the sport in this country. There may be some incompetence and a feeling that officials scoring reflects certain stereotypes (challenger has to do more than the champ to win, home town crowds will sway the judge). But out and out corruption? I'd like to think not. It can't be ruled out, one just needs to look at what's happened with the Pakistani cricketers for a wake up call, but they were manipulating the most minor and almost indiscernable of events that had next to no impact on the final result.

I hear what you say Jeff but no matter where or who you were sat with last night, nobody with an ounce of boxing knowledge could have possibly thought the fight was a draw.

Get the feeling having queried a couple of IJL scores in the past, specifically in Ian Napa fights, that as Milpool says, he is an official that can score aggression over clean punching, to his own detriment at times

I know Ian John Lewis does the voice for Nel Flanders on The Simpsons. I hear he's making MASSIVE money off that and with travelling to the US all the time it's little wonder he has taken his eye off the ball. That scorecard lkast night was outlandish. He should stick to cartoon voiceovers IMO.

hard to hold back mate, i was there and everyone could see it was a one sided affair and not even close to a draw!! I watched it again when i got home and its just the same so how a long standing ref/ judge can get it so wrong beggars belief.

As someone said earlier, this is people's livelyhoods they is messing with.....!!!!!!

at most he will get a slap on the wrist.

in another month or two a similar thread will pop up after he does something ridiculously incompetent again. and the cycle will repeat itself as usual with Ian John Lewis.

I wish you didn't have to hold back mate, I tell you. You're alright with calling people some things, but not others, is top and bottom of it.

He got it way wrong, in my opinion.
