It's not great help, but mma may be getting bigger day by day and boxing getting smaller, but the great fights are incomparable, people tell me they prefer mma because of the 50/50 fights, and boxing is to one sided, but when/if mayweather v paquio happens it will gross more then any mma match up can dream off ! What I'm trying to say is you could have live boxing on the BBC, itv, and ch 5 every Thursday Friday and Saturday night and people will soon get bored and watch the only way is Essex on itv14 because even the general public have a good idea who's going to win before it's started, the mma may be more fair although IMO not as skillful, and it can be boring at times. But when a super fight in boxing gets made nothing compares. Why ? Well this is the question, some sports have so much tradition and history the whole world will never forget it completely, so when the super fights do happen the whole world take notice, you could mention Ali or Tyson in any country and the vast majority of people have heard of these guys, mma stars will never be this big !
Joe frazier's recent death was on terrestrial news through out the world, could you ever imagine that with any UFC star ? In our life time marketing may well change millions of minds as what to watch but a pure fight between 2 men fighting only with there fists will always be number 1 !

The comparison I forgot to mention was football and handball, no matter how much marketing handball gets in the next 40 years it will never take over football !

Jeff I remember it was a fairly big deal at the time when UFC first went head to head with a big boxing event, both PPV.

It was mayweathers return v JMM and even Dana White referred to the boxing success (about 1m) as "phenomenal"

It wasn't a blockbuster UFC btw

Combined with a full time job and I'm pulling my hair out. Actually meant to be doing some now (on a friday fecking night) but found my way on here instead....

I do have a few fingers in a few pies regarding Boxing and MMA.

I did start writing you some stuff but then felt better of it as having done a University degree myself i think a student going out and finding the information themselves is as important then putting it all together. I didn't even have google when i did my degree but i learned alot by researching and finding it all myself. As a boxer i think you should find alot of doors will open to you both in the boxing and mma world so good luck and look forward to reading the finished report.

I will say one thing that i hope you cover is that mma has been a bigger threat to wrestling in America more so then boxing which was losing participation way back in the early 90's if you look at the figures for golden gloves tournaments, infact Boxing participation has actually been on the rise again the last few years. Also i think it's important to look at the element of Race and demographic in regards to the rise of mma and how their audience was essentially all white watching all white fighters, obviously that's slowly changed in the last few years more so with the fighters then the audience.

Yes, I think it's perfectly plausible that it could be, though I'll qualify by saying that it will be difficult to measure as the media landscape is so much more fragmented than in boxing's heyday and the choice for the consumer is so much broader.

BBC got their fingers burnt with Audley. ITV got a bit bored and slowed their output around the time of Froch/Pascal. Think Khan/Paulie M was their last show?

Rubbish - look how far UFC has come since it's inception, it already has some very well known household names, The Gracies in the past, Ken Shamrock, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture - I'd wager Randy Couture is as well known in the US as floyd mayweather is.

Up until recently, Boxing has really been the only heavily marketed and promoted combat sport (unless you count wrestling as a real sport) so it's not like it's had much if any competition - so no wonder it has been the most popular. In little over a decade, MMA has gone from a marginalised sport (certainly in the US and Europe) to a heavily marketed, high exposure regularly televised sport, with sponsorship from the likes of Harley Davidson - the kind of mainstream sponsorship boxing would kill for.

I have little doubt that UFC as a brand will become more popular than boxing overall in the next 10 years - it's accellerating at a rate boxing cannot match.

One of the major problems with boxing is the numerous titles, warring promoters, management conflicts, and overpaid stars, which means the top fights takes ages to happen, when indeed they happen at all. UFC suffers from none of the above - and as a result is making massive progress.

The problem for UFC will come when the top fighters start demanding the kind of wages the top boxers make, but for now, they have it pretty peachy.

Great post people forget one thing though and it's a biggy...... UFC isn't a sport, it's a brand. Mma is the sport , the promotion is UFC. It doesn't take a genius to work out that one day someone brands boxing the same way- hbo are half way there now.
