Agreed. Samil Sam really exposed Williams. I was surprised how comprehensively Sam beat Williams, and I realised then that he was never going to achieve at the very highest level.

Yep, amazing (with hindsight) we were complaining how Danny piled on the pounds ahead of the Sam fight.... well it was nothing compared to after. He really lost faith in his chin after the Sam fight and thought the only way he could take shots is by piling on the weight.

Not a bad tactic against Tyson, but he needed to be light and fast against Klitchsko, he promised us light and fast against Klitchsko. He really dissapointed me that night, not with his effort in the ring, but with his tactics. He fought hard, gave it his all, but could have been so much better - had he prepared differently.

Tyson absoloutley pummled him till danny swung it around

He has carried extra weight for years, the one fight he came in in shape for was Scott Gammer and put up a great performance.

Any fighter who could weather the first three rounds against an ageing Mike Tyson was in with a pretty good shout at beating him.

That's me. The super fan from Holland was an interesting little sidebar to Williams story. I heard that Gert was really touched that Danny singled him out for thanks in his interview. Danny was really humble to speak to, very under stated and considerate of others, you could tell boxing is like a drug to him. A follow up on Gert would be a good idea

The thing I don't understand about this is that Williams continually says how much he loves boxing here, but all through his career there were 'sources' who kept saying 'his heart's not in it, he doesn't like to fight, he's reluctant' etc. What's the deal there?

Maybe he loves being a fighter but hates the pressure and stress that come with it.

X2...I almost posted when I read about him loving fighting etc...reading the above spurred me into it. I seem to recall stories about his father 'pushing' him into it etc and that Danny was generally a reluctant boxer.

Also on weight...its daft that Danny didn't think he was any lighter for the Gammer fight; you could tell just by looking at him he was as light as he had been for a while (the commentary team noticed it too)....and he produced a good display as a result.

Anyway, wish him all the best in retirement and hope he finally gets round to doing that bodyguarding course.

I love Danny Williams, BUT, this negative, self effacing version has been around far too long now. I miss the Danny Williams who iced Kali Meehan in 20 seconds and used to talk about sparking Hasim Rahman in 2 and bashing up John Ruiz. He's right, he should have held back from the Klitschko bout and taken on Byrd or Ruiz.

Yes i remember the Kali Meehan fight, that was a great OVERHAND_RIGHT that ended it :)

Pleasure mate. Danny's so easy to talk too, he's a really down to earth bloke as you know.

Cool guy, could talk to him all day about boxing - hope he eventually stays involved in the game either training or commentating, he has a lot to offer.

when i interviewed Jimmy McDonnell he said the same, that getting danny motivated was always a real struggle and that he had never wanted to be a fighter.

However, what is clear that Danny was fearless in the ring and didnt seem to mind the business end of it, and seemed to thrive on adversity inmost cases (Potter,Tyson etc), but didn't I think enjoy the training and prep.

I think it's only when he realised it was all over that he realised how much he needed boxing, it must be so very hard for fighters to call it quits, all those years of devoting yourself to something and then suddenly it's done and dusted.
