The Hopkins fight was meaningless imo. They were both green and it was their first bout for a belt.

The Toney bout on the hand stands out.

100 % agree :TU:
Jones never claimed to be the best outside middle or super !
but at the time no man come close in his division.

A ridiculous thing to say, I take it you weren't watching boxing back then? Green? Jones was boxing regularly on HBO. He beat the dangerous future world champ Jorge Castro without breaking a sweat. He beat ex-champ Jorge Vaca in a round. He was taking on guys who would go 12 in world title fights and whack them. In his very next fight after Hopkins he would effortlessly become the only man to KO Sugarboy Malinga, with one punch, after Malinga had been robbed in England against experienced champs Benn and Eubank? Green? No way.

And Hopkins green at 22-1? He was USBA champ and had battered Dennis Milton, beaten Gilbert Baptiste who was a decent fighter, even back then some of his fights were on ITV, he wasn't considered some nobody. I'm no RJJ freak but in my opinion no version of Hopkins could deal with a prime Roy Jones.

I'm always surprised at the way his drug tests are overlooked. I loved Jones in his prime but can't put him up there amongst the all time greats with a drug cloud hanging over him, likewise Holyfield. I understand that both Jones and Holyfield built their palaces in sh1tty areas so can't even sell them to help with their financial problems.

Careful mate, Holyfield has never failed a drugs test in 27 years of pro boxing. Roy Jones has.

While Michalczewski was his nearest rival, that was only because he appeared to be the one guy at the weight who had a GLIMMER of a hope of beating him, but he would have been a huge underdog and presuming Jones beat him, I don't see how that would have added a great deal to his resume. When you look at his record "where is Michalczewski" hardly screams off the page.

As for Lewis, while Jones toyed with staying at heavyweight for a while, I don't think his excursion into the division was ever meant to be more than an interesting detour in his career rather than part of the main path. Thus, not fighting Lewis does not detract from his achievements either.

It's hard to picture it being 'epic' given Michalczewski's level of opp. Look at how Jones handled Virgil Hill. Michalczewski's bum of the month run ending of a one sided loss to Gonzalez who RJJ had badly beaten up underlines how superior Jones was.

I know, but neither have Shane Mosley or Marion Jones, both self-confessed drug cheats. The association with BALCO is damaging IMO. And boxing's drug testing is abysmal to be honest.

They were both caught out, they did not decide to admit being drug cheats out of the goodness of their own hearts.

No Roy Jones hasn't failed a drugs test.... one sample was deemed to have illegal levels of a banned substance. However, in order to fail a drugs test the B test also needs to test positive - the B test is a the same piss, pissed in a different bottle. This one (and Hall's) passed.

So technically, Jones never failed a drugs test.

Hang on, wasn't Hall some insane level over the limit, like 10x it or something? My mind's having to go back now.

Something like that if I remember correctly - both which suggested too me that there was some dodgy tampering of the A sample.

Maybe the B sample results were the ones that were tampered, we'll never know. But he didn't fail a test officially.

Personally I think the word Linear gets thrown around way too much. Shannon Briggs was once the Linear Champ at heavyweight, but he was nowhere near the "man" in the division.

I don't think it does. I truly believe Michalczewski would've caused Roy all sorts of problems. Roy never fancied the fight. I'm not going to get dragged any further into a mythical match-up debate, though. They're a waste of time.

His one of my favorite fighters of all time and IMO one of the greatest too, I just hope he finishes soon ! Does anyone believe he can still win a genuine world title ?
Regardless off who he beat I always thought that you had to win fights to get title shots. What ever title that might be. Its like you win, a fight, then fight some some a little better and so on until you fight the best and hopefully win the title. Who ever RJJ fought he was doing the oppersite! He was going backwards to go forwards, so the UBO you must like lose all your fights and go backwards, at some point you will have no more backwards to go, so you losr again and go from the back to rejoin the front, then start all over again. Yes I see itnow.

I always felt for some reason that RJJ would be one of the fighters that wouldn't go on too long, on account of his almost supernatural speed & athleticism.

I just felt that as soon as he realised he was becoming a bit more 'mortal', he wouldn't be able to take it & retire with his faculties & wealth, but alas not.
