with ease? Reality is Eubank was just passing his prime when RJJ was in his. 92 - 93 would have been the only time for this fight to happen.

Eubank was a tough fight for anyone i think he would have beaten toney. Top 3 guys around the super middle weight have been RJJ, Calzaghe and Eubank. Eubank never given full credit for the being probably one of the toughest iron willed fighters ever to step in the ring.

Yes, he'd have beaten Toney with his jab and lateral movement.

I absolutely loved watching eubank, a peak eubank was a hard hard man who could take a lot of punishment and give out even more, but IMO RJJ would of beat him hands down :bag:

Jones easy ko 6, most good chins get ruined by Jones just like Sugar Boy Malinga and Tony Thornton etc etc..

At SM Jones is the best in history, albeit a short history.

Maybe not with ease, but I definitely agree that RJ would have won.

Much like he beat Toney and Hopkins, with ease. you blokes seem to be forgetting how good Jones was back in the 90's.

Agree, I have everyone of his fights from the 90's on DVD, jones at his peak really was superman, he made great boxers look bad, he played with men in the ring like a cat playing with a mouse, I still put him in the top 10 p4p fighters of all time list, the only other boxer to make that list in the past 25 years is floyd mayweather.

I'm looking forward to anyone putting forward a sensible argument as to who could have beaten a prime RJJ at SM....

And please don't quote middles of light heavies who may have beaten him, we are talking about people who fought at SM.

A prime Eubank was a lot better than most of the guys Jones boxed. He would have stayed the distance and had his moments + we now know that roy used steroids, which tarnishes some of his achievements for me.

The fact that Jones did fight some inferior opposition doesn't mean that he wouldn't beat the very best out there. He beat Toney with ease and althought it was at light heavy, he demolished Montel Griffin. I'm not too sure why Jones didn't fight better opponents, but that could be said of Hopkins aswell, maybe people moved up weight divisions and missed each other, some were just in another period and missed Jones by two or three years and of course the championship belt and his deal made good money whether Jones fought good calibre fighters or push-overss. As for Eubank, he would have been a difficult opponent for anyone, but Jones had way more skills and frightening speed and would have won with comparable ease IMO.

I don't expect anyone to agree with me but I've always though a prime Calzaghe would have beaten a prime Jones Jnr. Calzaghe was just as fast, had terrific power before his hands went and had a workrate that would have drowned Jones. Joe would also have matched Jones for swagger and big fight mentality. Such a shame that he didn't do what was necessary to make fights like this happen.

When? The failed urine test for the Richard Hall fight shows nothing. As his B sample (same pissed) passed through.

Calzaghe could do waht he did because his opponents allowed him to do so. You could see in the Hopkins fight how Bernard mastered Calzaghe for the first six rounds before he began to tire and Calzaghe came back at him for the second half of the fight, losing by one round IMO. That was too an old Bernard Hopkins, which puts Calzaghe's opponents in proper perspective. Jones would have been too much for Calzaghe and would have played with him for 12 rounds and possibly stopped him in the later rounds. Calzaghe did have some speed, but Jones's speed and reflexes and sheer all round ability would been too much for Calzaghe. I think people look too much into Calzaghe's victories over Hopkins and Jones as old men, when in reality his best victory was against Mikkel Kessler, a very good fighter, but not the best out there at any time.

I agree Quixall, I don't think Calzaghe matched Jones for speed or defensive skills. Yes, Jones relied on reflexes - but they were fantastic in his pomp.

Its very hard to consider when Joe's prime was. Was it the green fighter who fought his heart out against Eubank? Was it against Brewer (or was his hands gone by then - remember Bomber Graham had floored Brewer and he got stopped by Echols) - was he also experienced in the big fights at this stage and often made defensive and tactle errors? Or was it with the Lacy fight, when he had big fight experience, became a master tactictions, but had poorly hands.

I think for a lot of people they would suggest the Lacy / Kessler period as being Calzaghe's best. It's almost as if he got the Hopkins and Jones' fights off beating Kessler and remaining undefeated. The Hopkins fight was a challenge and one he lost in my opinion, but the Jones fight was money for old rope really. I think however people now view Jeff Lacy, Calzaghe's boxing that night was supreme and that will hold in a lot of people's memories. The Kesser fight perhaps shaded it, not because of Calzaghe's performance, but more for the fact that it was Kessler that he beat that night.

Yes, but that was hardly a prime Calzaghe though was it? By that stage, Calzaghe's hands were ruined so he could only thrown pitty pat flurries. His granite chin was also starting to show cracks.

Exactly Jones jnr was just so many many leagues above at that time....his chin didnt come into it as he rarely got hit.

Eubanks would have been stopped by Jones jnr around the 8th or 9th or he would have taken a 12 round battering and not won a single round..... jones jnr had a knack of doing that to good guys, sure mccalllum was old but Jones made him look foolish, pazienza, malinga, griffin, clinton woods all world champs were all made to look like third rate bums by jones jnr
