People have been saying for a while that one of the guys they would like to see Mayweather fight is Cotto. I think this was a better fighter three to five years ago at welterweight before Cotto had his confidence rocked by the defeats to Margaritio and Pacqauio, but it's happenning now and it's a better fight than the last one with Ortiz. It makes it slightly more interesting that its at 154lbs, but i see Mayweather countering and pot shotting all night long. Mayweather will just be too quick and agile and get a unanimous decision.

There certainly is a pattern in recent years with Mayweather fighting boxers who are either slightly off there prime or well past their prime or fighting at a weight that suits Mayweather. He tends only to fight those guys in their prime years if he knows he can beat them as was the case with hatton. In other examples, Mosley was well over the hill compared to what he was despite the Margarito fight, Cotto is now slightly past his prime years and Marquez was at a weight he had never fought at, though he did do well recently against Pacqauio.

I think that Mayweather would have beaten Mosley, De La Hoya and Marquez at any time and in their respective primes, though i think that the Mosley and De La Hoya (147lbs) would have been tough fights. Mayweather will recieve critisism for not fighting particular fighters when they were on top form and whether that is down to finance, timing or boxing politics, it will still slightly stain Mayweather's repuatation and legacy. It even has to be said that when or if he fights Pacqauio, many people will rightly say that he faced a diminishing Pacqauio.

I have mentioned that Glyn in other posts i've made on possible Mayweather opponents for the future, but i think it's a tad unrealistic to expect Martinez to fight at 154lbs at this stage in his career. He couold be tempted, but it would be a wrong move IMO because at his age he could end up weight drained and i think Mayeather uses his speed and reflexes to dominate the fight through counters all night long. Darren Barker exposed Martinez to a degree. Martinez doesn't get to fight many quality fighters these days, he is getting on in years and i think he is on the downwards slope, it's just that the division isn't particularly strong these days. A good test for him would be Canelo, not Mayweather.

Mayweather has to be favourite, but my senses were telling me during the Ortiz fight that he's starting to show signs of aging. Cotto's big, strong and determined and could muscle his way into the fight. I dont see him winning, but i dont see him getting beat up badly either. Mayweather will likely take most rounds and a wide UD.

I'll be hoping Cotto can get to him though

Mayweather is 34 now, going on 35 and he fights on average every 15 months, so at some point he will start to decline. I personally disn't see any signs in the Ortiz fight that Mayweather is on the slide, but at some point it will happen. I would say that Floyd has around 18 months to 2 years left, three fights including this one with Cotto.

He was only 158 for Barker, I think he could drop the extra four with enough incentive - and there'd be plenty of that

Yeah i can see incentive aswell, but he hasn't fought a proper world class fighter at 154lbs for three years and i'm saying that with all due respect to Barker. I can see his name being mentioned if a Pacquaio fight doesn't come off for Floyd.

can`t see cotto winning tbh,though floyd often has problems with bigger fighters (castillo,de la hoya),i don`t think it will be a shutout

Could be interesting, Mayweather has been caught early on and had to "figure out" his opponents against Hatton, DeLaHoya, Judah, Mosely, Corley, Castillo and Cotto is as live as most of them so I expect him to have some success, and if he can keep Mayweather out of his comfort zone to round 6 or 7 has a good chance of stealing a win.

I don't think Mayweather will have it all his own way. I've slagged him off in the past so got to give him credit for stepping up. If he wins I hope he fights a few more at 154, love to see him fight Alvarez.

against cotto at 154 is the most competative fight that mayweather has had in years. If cotto still has fire in his belly we can finally see the smile wiped off mayweather's stupid face. cotto to finally prove that mayweather is not as good as they say. would like to see mayweather doing an impression of malignaggi when he went in with cotto all those years ago.

Is this confirmed at 154 or will it be some catchweight bollox at 150?
