There is always a way of determining whether a fight is a mismatch. If the fighter seems to be trying to convince the journalist or the public that his opponent is good, then it is probably a mismatch. If the fighter highlights the opponents weaknesses and almost comes to the point of slagging him off, or actually does slag him off, then it is probably a good fight.

Prime recent example of mismatch talk was Cleverly praising his opponent pre fight and saying stuff like 'I cant be overlooking this guy he is tough' or words to that effect. On the other hand I fully expect Carl Froch and Lucien Bute to be highlighting each others weaknesses.

I agree. It's such a shame the fight didn't happen. It doesn't mean as much now. Pacquiao has been declining, imo, and things have dragged on too much.

Edit: Watching the video now. Mayweather says, "My health is more important than anything". He's basically saying Pacquiao is more dangerous than any of his recent opponents. Interesting.

mayweather isn't scared of pacman, he would beat him, and he knows it,3years ago it would have been much more competitive, pacman has lost his killer instinct, it has become a massive cockoff,of who dictates what, mayweather wants to show he is the man and doesnt have to make concessions. It is all total bullshit, it is like leonard hearns without the fight, and it is the reason that boxing is no more than a sideshow.

Can't agree in the slightest with this. Marquez is technically sound, decent but not spectacular movement and he gave Manny fits. Morales is technically solid also and he gave Manny problems first time around. Floyd is better than both, his movement has settled and technically he is a solid fighter. If anything he is all wrong for Manny and there isn't a single sign that your statement will hold fruit other than Judah, who fought a different style of fight, giving Floyd problems for a few minutes then getting out boxed round after round.

As for De La Hoya, I feel that it was a clear win for Floyd, he may have looked smaller but it was Oscar doing the little dance when clipped on the chin with accurate shots. Oscar was not accurate enough to win that fight and not good enough or hardened enough to sustain any good work he did.

Manny can't beat Floyd, I suspect that Roach, Arum and Knocz know this so they'll keep him well clear. If Freddie does want the fight it will be purely to be the first coach to hand Floyd a loss, but it won't happen in a million years because Manny's not good enough to compete with Floyd if Mayweather still has some form left.
No, you do agree with it..... just got our wires cross. I mean Manny is all wrong for Floyd..... cause Manny is going to get a boxing lesson. Floyd all wrong for Manny, Manny all wrong for Floyd - don't matter how you phrase it - I can only see one winner here (as I said the post before, when I said Cotto has more of a chance) .

My point on Oscar vs Floyd is also getting lost in translation somewhat, my only point was on the size aspect. Yes, Floyd looked the puncher of the two. Although, surely we can agree that this fight was in at least Floyd's top three toughest fights - in terms of rounds lost etc. I think Oscar hitting the shoulders, gloves etc was having an affect on Floyd cause for large portions he wasn't throwing enough.

Only time I saw Floyd fight and I thought "mmm.... he's beatable" - Now was it due to fighting a big light middle. Thats the only reason why I think this is a harder ask than Pac Man.
Cotto's size will count for nothing....skill beats size every time.

Your entitled to your opinion.... can I just ask - aside from Manny (obviously) who do you has a chance against Floyd? Martinez (mmm maybe, but I aint sure someone who lost 4 rounds against Barker is the fighter to give Floyd trouble).... seriously, who else?

I agree in someways that Cotto has been overated, I don't see him as a hall of famer (of course he is going in, but he aint an all time great IMO - unless he upsets Floyd). However, I think this is Floyd's toughest ask.

King - I largely agree, I don't think Cotto stands much of a chance, but I do feel that due to the size difference (Cotto is going to look massive next Floyd, as did DLH did - which was a fight that could have gone either way) as the reason why this is a tougher fight than Manny.

I think stylistically Manny is all wrong for Floyd.

I can. Styles make fights. Floyd wouldn't have too much of a speed advantage, can be discomfited by southpaws, & Martinez is bigger & stronger & quicker than Cotto. I also think he hits harder. I still think Floyd would win, but he might not. It'd be interesting to see how May's single shots impact on a guy that sturdy (Martinez always seems solid in the beard department, aside from his dodgy balance).

If someone learned Mike Jones to fight behind the jab properly & gave him a proper right cross then he'd do the do. But they haven't & probably won't, so.

So is it Martinez, Jones and Pacquiao are the only fighters you'd be interested in seeing Floyd fight - cause all the rest haven't got a chance.

I would agree that Martinez would cause arguably more problems for Floyd than Cotto cause again, he's a big lad - but if we focus on 147 and 154 lbs fighters - there aren't many fights you'd like to see Floyd fight and you seem to be blaming Floyd for this and calling it a lack of cojones. For me, I think its a bit extreme to condem a match up against a three weight world champion who is the current #1 at 154 as poor fight that is not worthy of the interest. I think its a sign of the talent that is Floyd.

I don't think Cotto stands much of a chance (seems people are reading my posts and think I believe the fight will be close).... all I said was give Cotto more of a chance than I did Hatton and I do Pacquiao. As King pointed out if an aging Marquez can beat Pacquiao to the punch consistently - then a younger, faster, bigger, better defensive fighter like Mayweather did. I don't think the "chin problems" (first time I've ever heard Cotto being labelled "chinny" - sure he is no Marciano, but labelling him chinny is a bit extreme) will be a factor in the fight. If Cotto can make it past four rounds, then I think Floyd will be content with a point wins - as he was Marquez and Mosley - his hands are a concern still.

James its not ALWAYS the case that a better little guy will beat a good big guy - Evander Holyfield for me was more skilled than Riddick Bowe as an example.

Stu, mate, there is a vast cold interstellar gulf between "I don't think Cotto is going to win" & "condemn[ing] a match up against a three weight world champion".

You asked me if he had any chance, not whether I "condemned" the match. I said no, he didn't have any chance, told you why I think so & that's all I said. The invective (if there was any) was aimed at the idea that Cotto's recently had any sort of resurgence. My point was: how could anyone tell, from who he's been fighting?

PS: Yeah, that's the only three I'd watch him against, but not because of some Mary Whitehouse -esque stand against him fighting "inferior opposition" (I still cannot see where the fvck you've got that from, btw); rather 'cos he's an annoying prick who I find as exciting to watch as paint dry. Make someone lead, slip, counter, hold/elbow, slide out to the side, rinse repeat - Datsue falls unconscious into his ashtray & only the cold glimmerings of dawn awake him from his slumber, is how most of his fights go for me.

To quote Ezzard, of this parish, "The man's got a style only his mother could find exciting".

This was your words in which I responded to.

"Floyd's attitude to getting in any fight that he might conceivably lose since De La Hoya has rather left him open to people making snap judgements about the fella, & his cojones (or lack of)."

I appologise that I misread it and thought you implied there were a few fights he could "conceivably lose to" - I simply asked who these were you answered, you answered why you felt Cotto had no chance. I personaly thought it was a bit extreme to right off Cotto completely (I mean completely as in less than 10% chance, against a 35 year old Welterweight with hand trouble). I would give Cotto more of a chance than two of the fighters you mentioned (Jones and Pacquiao) and would have been dissapointed had it been Jones in the ring and not Cotto.

I don't think there is anyone who I would give Floyd more than a 30% percent chance in winning against.... which would be Martinex - for me I would give the Light Middleweights (Cotto / Alvarez) more of a chance than the Welterweights.

There is a big gulf also between "I don't think Cotto is going to win" and "there is no conceivable way Cotto can win". The latter implies a poor match up.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

& if Forrest was about, Floyd wouldn't touch him with a fvcking bargepole, & his fans would immediately construct some bizarre reason as to why he didn't need to fight him.

I know its been asked quite a bit of sky, but not often here (with good reason) but in terms of potential.... how much of a chance would people give Kell Brook against Money.

Its just its the first time I've heard Mike Jones name mentioned as an interesting fight and I've always considered Brook a better fighter than Jones and both are at similar(ish) stages in terms of development.

Has a lot of tools does Kel. Personally I don't give anyone from Welter to Middleweight more than a 30% chance against Floyd, just wondering what people think of Kel's chances.

Agree Floyd against Forrest would have been a very interesting fight. Think Floyd wins, but that jab, the speed of his jab and his solid defence would have given him questions. Similar I guess to when people thought Paul Williams was the real deal and the man who could beat Floyd. Whilst Forrest was inconsistent, he was consistency personified compared to Williams. Floyd and Forrest were really different eras though. Forest was absolutely superb that first fight against Mosley - brilliant.... but he never really repeated that level of performance. Not in the rematch with Mosley, nor in his fights at Light Middle.

Tell you who Brook would be in with a right good shout of beating - Miguel Cotto.

As I've said before I dont see anyone from 135 all the way to 160 with even a remote possibility of beating Mayweather.

I also push it further and border on lunacy by asking: would it be absolutely inconcievable that Mayweather could outpoint e.g. Carl Froch?

Sergio Martinez would beat Mayweather. Mayweather knows that, so the fight will not happen. I'd love to see Gennady Golovkin demolish Mayweather.

Asterix,

Need to see more of Golovkin as a pro - but seeing what he did as an amateur and what he is doing so far as a pro.... he is a fighter who needs to be talked about more. Could very well be the #1 Middleweight.

I just think Martinez's time might be coming to an end, he looked pretty dreadful against Barker at times.

I’m not sure I agree with people on size. I had an exchange on here with legendary poster jamesmcdonnell  before DLH-May…

My point is both men first became world class in the same weight category. This suggests that beneath the protein shakes they are/were evenly sized. DLH was probably too old to get down.

Or put it another way… I could hit the roids (though it’s hard to improve on what God gave me), become 300 pounds of testosterone fuelled super muscle and be able to bench press a triple decker bus using just a semi-hard_on… but a guy like Chisora would always hit harder and take a punch better than me.

I also believe that aggressive fighters who rely on power, strength, holding a shot, find it far more difficult that defensive masters do when moving up.

Floyd is not only better than Pac (and it hurts me to say so) but he’s also bigger. A few years ago Pac might have sneaked a decision on sheer volume but not now.

Mayweather couldn’t beat Froch though. He’d have to be moving all night and that’s not his game.

I think it's a good point you make about fighters moving up with more defensive styles find it easier than others who are more aggressive. I always thought that was partly the reason why Hatton seemed to stuggle when he moved up. He certainly wasn't as comfortable ay 147lbs as he had been at 140lbs.

The ones who do it have, or develop, an extra dimension to their game and have to become better defensively...Duran, Toney, Chavez...
