I think you are being very harsh and if i may say very narrow minded. Ottke was not "one of the least likely success stories"....he was one of the last Communist era outstanding amateurs. A true amateur code man...and a distinguished world champion in that code. To than go on at a very advanced stage to turn pro and pretty much beat everyone and anyone at the weight bar Calzaghe in such a short window and retire undefeated was a very impressive achievement. People complain he won many gifts but those people probably didnt see almost all Ottkes title defences like I did and are certainly talking about fights they never saw and just repeating old wives tales on forums. Glencoffe Johnson and Charles Brewers crying wasnt quite the truth I had Ottke winning handily...equally reid hardly got robbed. He didnt do anywhere near what Macklin and Murray did against sturm which themselves were fights that could have gone either way . Ottkes win was a little better and IM one of Reids biggest fans felt he was denied against Calzaghe.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:For reasons that i cant adequately explain i've been watching some Sven Ottke fights on the interweb.
He has to go down as one of the least likely success stories in boxing history. He was inept in every single department.
Charisma? None
Excitement? Once, against Mundine.
Talent? Meh, knew how to protect himself at least
Baldness? Yes
Power? Again once against Mundine
Opponents? All damaged goods.
How in gods name did this bloke hold a world title for 6 years and routinely fill 18,000 seat stadiums?
Anyway, give us some of your examples of unlikely superstars , if you can be arsed.

To be fair, while I'm no fan of Ottke, that's a great post that addresses the balance somewhat.mugabi wrote:I think you are being very harsh and if i may say very narrow minded. Ottke certainly had charisma to the packed houses he congregated in Germany. And also those who appreciated good boxing skills. He was a true east german folk hero. His perm and look may have been non hip hop but he didnt lack charisma.
He wasnt bald, he shaved his head. His opponents were not damaged goods, what planet are you on talking such nonsense? he beat glencoffe johnson, and he beat Brewer twice and Mitchell before Calzaghe did . He also beat an unbeaten Mundine and Branco who went on to win world titles or compete for them. He had at times his fair share of easy foes but that was cos he fought 6 times a year in title fights.
All I know is back in 1999-2002 i realy enjoyed coming home from my first real job on a Tuesday night and watching ottke fight on eurosport and listen to Steve Holdsworth commentate on them. They were also the first fights i saw in the superior digital tv signal. It was bliss being a 22-23 year old doing boxing myself to watch Ottke

Yeah, i didnt read any of that, but judging by the length of it you are probably right on all counts.mugabi wrote:I think you are being very harsh and if i may say very narrow minded.
