There was a Dempsey film in the 80's, too.
It was made for tv with treat Williams, not a Hollywood picture...
Bought this film on DVD recently. I had not seen it since the night it was shown on TV as part of the build up to the McGuigan v Cruz fight. After watching the Dempsey v Willard fight many times I could'nt believe how well they reconstructed the fight. It was like I was watching the real fight but in colour! It was obvious that they had studied the fight film meticulously. Captured it perfectly I thought.

How was the flick?

I saw it once when I couldnt have been more than twelve, can hardly recall any of it.

There was, incidentally, a 1999 telemovie called Rocky Marciano, which was a pretty damn good watch (the unforgivable exclusion of the first Walcott bout aside). Jon Favreau (who played the title character) wishes he were still in that kinda shape

What a coincidence! I bought the Rocky Marciano movie at the same time as I did the Dempsey movie. I am in a PAL region and bought both DVDs which are NTSC from Amazon as I couldn't get them in the PAL format. I have a multi region DVD player that will play both movies.

So far I have only watched the Willard fight scene from the Dempsey movie as it stuck in my head from the first time I saw it and wanted to see it again. I'll get to watch it in full this week and I'll let you know.

I think Benny just about gets the nod here, a huge battle with the bottle will make for more dramatics than Tigers taking a stand in the political struggle in Nigeria.

I'll put myself forward for the starring role, being a shortass who likes a drink and struggles to keep my weight down where it belongs.

Salvador Sanchez or Manny Paquiao
