Sugar Ray Leonard, without doubt the greatest fighter of all time, speed, power, skill, heart, stamina, mental strength, toughness, intelligence, chin, tactical expert, movement, charisma and with the fastest feet. The nearest thing to perfection in boxing. If not for the inactivity would have achieved even more, would you believe it. Leonard beat the best fighters of his generation including greats like Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Benitez, plus he won titles at 5 different weight divisions, in the Ams in won a gold medal in the Olympics.

nah,im`e not having it he was the best ever, might have been the most talented ever but that does`nt make you the best of all time
iv`e got him behind duran and hagler in my time,i could probably make a case for ten others to be rated higher as well
sugar ray robisnon was before my time so i can`t comment on him

Fair comment, while he certainly was a great fighter there is definately plenty of doubt he was the greatest!
Can you imagine what Leonard could have done with the much bigger Hagler if he had not been out of the ring for about 3 years and remember Hagler was considered by many as one of the greatest Middleweights of all time, can you imagine Hearns, Duran, Hagler and Benitez fighting against today's greats, they would wipe the floor with them, only Mayweather could stand out with them, out of the fab five of leonard's generation, Leonard was the only one to beat the rest, amazing. I understand that different people like different style fighters, so not everybody likes fast, skilled boxers. If you examine the great fighters of all time, check out
quality of opponents, am and pro career, how they did against fighters in higher weight divisions, did they raise the profile of boxing, where they role models, how they came back from defeat and on an ability level, speed, power, skill, movement, charisma, punch range, defense, attack, front foot, back foot, tactics, ability to adapt, heart, stamina, fitness, Leonard could do it all, how many fighters can you name that fill this list, Leonard fought and beat Champions from welter to light heavy, When Sugar Ray Robinson moved up to fight a light heavy he got stopped and he also got beat by very ordinary fighters. If Leonard is not the best, name the one who is and why ? If Leonard was around today he would have fought Mayweather, Pacman, Moseley, Dela Hoya, Alvarez, Martinez, cotto, and beat them all. I understand why not everyone will agree, but would be interested in who other people rate as the best and why ?
You have to realise that Hagler had an awful lot of miles on the clock by then - it was a tremendous achievement no doubt, but Leonard saw that Haglers footwork and timing were on the wane. If I remember rightly it was whilst watching the Mugabi fight, that Leonard decided he had seen weakness in Hagler he could exploit.
I think that a few years earlier,Hagler would have chased Leonard down and punished him down the stretch. I doubt he would have stopped Leonard, but he would have been able to cut off the ring.
Whilst Leonard had been retired, he had been in the gym non stop during his retirement, and had had comparatively few fights compared to Hagler who had over 50 fights by the time he fought Leonard. Hagler was an old35 (I think thats how old he was), and Leonard saw that.
I have to say, for me, Leonard and Duran are both up there, but its a long long way to get anywhere near the records of Robinson and Armstrong. Both men were absolute destroyers at Welterweight and had incredibly well stuffed resumes.
I rate Leonard exceptionally highly, I think he would have outpointed Mayweather comparitively easily, and maybe even stopped him, at 147 Leonard was an incredible fighter, and only an all time great on a good night in Duran had the wherewithall to beat him.He had the whole package, ring smarts, power, speed, toughness, incredible will, and the heart of a true champ, a great fighter and one I feel priviledged to have been around to see first time around.

Leonard was a great fighter, but you would put Robinson, wilde and definately Armstrong in front of him. Leonard was one of the best of his era, but there are so many smaller guys who are just as good. You could even name pepp, Chavez, etc.

Ray Leonard would have given any welter, in any age a real fight. He was very tough, very determined and could really get stuck in. From bouts of Robinson I've seen on DVD/video I admire Leonards' footwork more. He is one of the very best I've seen box. He does come across very well and is charming and articulate. When he was boxing though he knew he was the box office star and would have the decks stacked in his favour; at one time he was a boxer who could bend the rules and get away with. Still and fantastic box fighter though!

I would love to hear how someone could argue that Leonard was better than Robinson. Robinson's record is just unbelievable. Robinson didn't have the luxury of fighting 4 times he year, he would often fight 4 times a month in his early career, and still remained unbeaten until he met LaMotta, who was a much bigger man.
He is remembered as a middleweight, but Robinson really was at his best at Welter, he was already past his prime at 160, and yet compiled a stellar record.
Having said all that, Leonard was an absolute pleasure to watch. I doubt very much that anyone else around at that time could have beaten Hearns, he was an absolute beast, and Leonard showed a champions heart to turn around a fight he was losing by turning slugger and beating the living daylights out of Hearns.
However, nobody is ever going to get close to the record of Robinson, to have as many fights as he did, and so few losses in nothing short of superhuman.

Agreed, nobody would have beaten him hands down, he would have been competitive with absolutely anyone in history, but on merit, his resume is not as deep as either Robinson or Armstrongs. Its just because he had comparatively few fights, even for someone of his own era.
Leonard was the model for people like Mayweather, who is basically semi retired, but always in the gym traning and sparring.
If Leonard had not had his retina problems, his career would have looked very different, he lost some of his peak years sadly.

I always wonder what would have happenned if Duran hadn't have said "No Mas" and would have carried on. It's perhaps true to say that Leonard would have still won because he fought his fight the second time around, but i still think that Duran quitting kind of tarnished it for Leonard. Would have been far better if Duran hadn't of quit and Leonard would have won over the distance.

I agree; and would put Armstrong right at the very top of a pound for pound list, maybe infront of Robinson, (who apparently 'ducked' Burley). The thing is Leonard got $40,000 for his debut and progressively higher purses. He is in a very small group of boxers able to get those purses. If Robinson or Armstrong had commanded those purses, held the strings, had intelligent lawyers as advisers then they would have had far fewer bouts. (To be honest, though someone arlier said that Robinson was at his best as a welter most bouts were non title and pretty undemanding; rather like exhibitions).

I disagree with this point Quixall. I feel that Duran packing in mid fight added to the Leonard mystique. He out psyched the animal. Kirkland Laing beat Duran on points, as did Benitez, DeJesus and Hagler (when Duran was in or near his prime). None is seen as the victory Leonards is.

I'm not so sure it has added to Leonard's mystique.
There's still an awful lot of people out there who make excuses for Duran's 'no mas', whilst not having a good word to say about SRL.
Just imagine what these people would have said if SRL had just quit in the 1st fight, claiming stomach cramps, just because the fight was not going the way he wanted?
They would have pilloried Leonard & quite rightly, but for some reason, they don't do that with Duran.

Duran was proven in very hard battles and was 72-1 going in. Many felt he was the best lightweight champ of all time. Durans' trainer Ray Arcel quit boxing heartbroken after the bout and found it very difficult to believe that Duran would ever quit. If Leonard had stopped mid bout or turned his back there wouldn't have been such disbelief as he'd not proven himself over and over. Others had run and frustrated Duran but he'd chased and ground out the win.
That Leonard messed with Duran after standing with him before did add to the mystique. If he'd have run and fiddled the 1st bout, it wouldn't have been the same. Leonard proved himself the physical equal to Duran 1st bout and destroyed him mentally 2nd.

Finally you have got it right you both know nothing about boxing just armchair slobs, I mean I don't know what goes round in your head and I don't think you do either, according to you Naseem Hamed is an ordinary champion, then later he is special. Today I am doing a demonstration with boxers in front of a large amount of people including people from the industry, what are you guys doing ? I won't be missing any anything educationally from your self imposed exile from my posts and won't have to go down to your level to answer you, so fine with me. I don't know if Ray has had any 'help', but IMO, he looks a lot younger than 56.
He could easily pass for a guy of 40, if that.

After watching Ray Leonard on Ringside, i was captivated by his great stories, and of course ive heard of him previously and have seen bits and bobs (i was born in 1982, so didnt get to see his glory days first-hand)... it led me this afternoon to watch on youtube his fight with Hagler. I know Leonard was coming off a very long lay off but imo he was lucky to get the verdict and looked desperate from round 8 or 9 onwards.
I wasnt as impressed with Leonard as I thought I might have been.
