Again I think Rees would have plenty of success early but once he starts to slow down after 4 or so rounds, Burns would take over. He has proved he can keep a fight at distance for 12 rounds and with his height advantage, chin and extra workrate I just can't see how Rees wins this.
I think it would be a great fight as I think Rees would trouble anyone early in a fight. But Matthews had a little success in their short fight and Watson & Murray had spells on top once Rees slowed down, no offence to those guys but I think Burns is at a very different level.
Fair point. I think the only thing that beats Rees is a big puncher with a high work rate. Ricky has the work rate, I'm not sure he has the required dig. Would be cracking fight mind, great combination of fights to be made.
Agreed, would like to see John Murray back involved as well, always felt he and Rees would be an absolute cracker. Rees would embarrass him in those early rounds but could Murray tough it out and catch up to him? The main thing is that no combination of the 4 would turn out to be a dull fight imo
Thats exactly what I was thinking (about any of the combination being a fight to look forward to!). The other interesting point is with their differing styles and attributes beating one man is no indication about a result against the next, which is why (as you say) Murray-Rees is still of big interest. They should have a league table and get the four of them in, home and away! It was a nice dream for the split second it lasted

we could have a mini tournament with rees, crolla, mitchell and burns to see who the best lightweight is my money would be on mitchell if the real one shows up not the one against katsidis, i'd reckon rees would beat burns and all 3 would beat crolla at this stage of his career.

rees can`t pace himself imo,he goes mental for 5 rounds and after that he`s gassed, mitchell should be able to handle him no problem, late stoppage

Rees has indeed sorted his engine, IMO and if he ever fights Burns, looks like I might be winning a few quid from you lads

That certainly makes more sense 'promotionally'.

I dont bet, but sorry mate, I have to disagree. I'd give Rees more of a chance against Burns than I would Mitchell but I'd still take Burns over both of them. He has mastered his style, distance and pacing of a fight much better than either of those. He has improved whereas I don't think Rees and Mitchell have.

Id really like to see a UK only Super-6 tournament featuring:
Kevin Mitchell
Gavin Rees
Ricky Burns
Anthony Crolla
John Murray
Carl Johanneson
There are some cracking fights in there and i think any one of those boxers could beat any other on their day.
To keep it on topic though i think this would be a really close fight and honestly couldnt pick a winner, i guess if mitchell stayed out of the pub and rees stayed in the gym it would be 50/50.

Go the whole hog and add Alex Arthur and Scott Harrison.

The fact we're so divided makes it a good match up then!

Alex has moved up to light-welter and scott wouldnt be fight enough to contend :) next

If the Gavin Rees of his last fight fought the Kevin Mitchell of his last fight then Rees would win handily. I understand some people thinking it's a lot closer than that but Gavin's ridiculously underrated. He's won a world title and a prizefighter at a weight he had no business at and he's won a British and European title at lightweight, and most importantly, he's in better shape than ever before with a better trainer than he had before.

I give Gavin a very good chance he beat Murray all day long. I think its wrong boxing monthly have Murray ahead of him.

Ricky has bigger fish to fry than a mini tournament with domestic fighters get real lads and think about it

Ricky ought to make some good money as a decent champ. The others, Mitchell, Murray and Rees ought to get in an elimination thing though. Ricky has proved a cut above all other lightweights in Britain; a bout between any of those others should be an excellent showcase, a good class of styles and make everyone some decent dough.

How is anyone not real when talking about the best in Britian fighting each other? You say 'think about it' and I've done just that. The level of domestic Lightweights in this country is high at the moment. I believe most would like to see them all fighting each other. Gavin Rees, Kevin Mitchell, Ricky Burns and John Murray the main four we are speaking about here but are amongst other good Lightweights. You seem to forget that Gavin Rees has been 'World Champion', Kevin Mitchell has challenged for one (although Interim) and so has John Murray. They are all rated by the World Governing bodies. What bigger fish do you want? The Mayweather's of this world?? Your comment is a little disrespectful to these other boxers and what they have achieved. Between them all they have gained British, European, Commonwealth and World Titles. You could also argue that the WBA Title Gavin Rees held has a whole lot more credibility than the Interim WBO Ricky Burns won. I think you may be a little bit deluded to rubbish Ricky Burns's domestic rivals off and you'd be wise to refrain yourself from posting ridiculous, biased schoolboy like comments to save yourself future embarrassment

Burns, Mitchell and Rees are top 10 in the world, Crolla and Murray are top 25 and Johanneson on form would beat any of them.
I was hardly suggesting he fight a load of fighters who wouldnt make the top 100 in the world, there is a cracking pool of fighters here and something like that makes sense.
Ricky Burns is only a domestic star (and only amongst boxing fans, and narrowed down again to allegedly subscribers because he doesnt get any sky coverage), in America nobody has ever heard of him so the likelyhood of getting a big payday over there is unlikely.
John Murray got a reported $40,000 purse to fight Rios, which was increased to $70,000 after he didnt make weight, hardly big bucks for heading over the water, although Ricky does hold the title so add another 50% on. He should be able to get similar money and more regular fights on the domestic scene while building his name internationally.

What like Nicky Cook, Andreas Evensen, Paulas Moses and Joseph Laryea. In the current climate those guys aint fish there tadpols.
He's doing a good job of swimming around and away from the big fish....... Michael Katsides was a good performance but as he has lost again that win is becoming less valuable.

Im sure we can expect the highest quality world challengers for his next opponents like FW's other WBO World Champion, i mean the calibre of fighter that that Cleverly is coming up against recently is second to none!

I think a few saw Katsidis Friday and think he's shot to sh*t now. All of his strengths have deserted him it would seem. The wrecking ball that came over to demolish Mitchell has seemingly snapped off the chain.
I still think Burns is #1 despite the above. He performed well in his last fight.

mitchell-rees winner is a natural challenger to burns. surely this will be marketed as a fight that will produce a world title challenger...
rees held a title on the world stage and mitchell won an elim type of contest vs john murray.
a shame michell seems to have priced himself out of the burns matchup.
hopefully burns does have bigger fish to fry as billy says, but are these fights being put together? in the meantime burns v the mitchell-rees winner is very appealing.
