How long has it been formally illegal for a boxer to bet for (and against I would imagine) themselves. I remember Sky doing a segment with Steve Robinson where he puts a grand on him beating Hamed. Filmed him at the bookies..... They also used to talk betting with one time bookie assistant, Robin Reid (lucky they didn't talk about his other line of work)

It is not illegal to bet on yourself to win. It is illegal to be involved in a conspiracy to defraud bookies (ie holding up an opponent, throwing a fight).
