Our two best sellers this year were Floyd covers, the first Haye- Chisora cover might be in the same region but I haven't got the final figures yet. The Ali cover was a poor seller, which pisses me off because I bowed to another opinion on that one - I wanted Vitali-Chisora, which turned into a major fight once Chisora started playing up. I was uncertain about the argument that Ali was the bigger name, therefore he should get it. On the surface that makes sense, but I was questioning whether Ali actually means much to today's boxing fans - he was 40 years ago. You have to adjust but it's hard to go against 'a banker' and Ali used to do good figures, although Tyson was the best, a guaranteed seller, so much so that one Tyson cover would allow us to take risks with two or three subsequent issues - I liked those times.
The best selling issue is the first one ever, with Tyson on the cover. This makes me feel great! It's rewarding to think we have become increasingly unpopular over the last 24 years! But it refects the popularity of the sport. Boxing just isn't getting across to the public anymore, since FW went to Sky with Naz, Bruno, Benn etc. Sky do a great job but in cold reality they are just a big minority channel, minnows compared to ITV and BBC, and sales have gradually dropped from the point when Sky became THE outlet and terrestrial disappeared. Boxing mag sales have dropped maybe 30/40 per cent in the UK since that point.
Glyn, realise it's no consolation, but I'm back in the UK this week and yesterday was very telling on two counts:
1) Met with a former colleague who's still in publishing and the circulation drops in the division he works in are staggering/scary. I suspect BM is holding up better than many other sectors.

In the late 90's Loaded's circulation was approximately 450,000. Today its 35,000 and its not as if men have become less interested in womens breasts over the last 10 years.
Peoples habits have changed, buying magazines is not part of peoples lives any more.
I have no idea why i have mentioned loaded twice, i have never even read a single issue of it.

When loaded first launched the journalism was actually pretty good. It was seen as a lifestyle mag, sort of a sub GQ for the average lad on the street who was into getting fucked up and listening to music etc. Very few tits in it for the first year or so, then it spawned a 100 low rent copies and it sort of became self parody. James Brown (ex NME) then went onto GQ and revived that.
Like I say, the first few issues were absolutely nothing like Nuts mag is now, they had decent articles in that you could actually read and it was vaguely interesting. It even had some Gonzo journalism in.

I'm a massive BM fan but I thought this months was not as good (admittedly the benchmark is high) as it has been.
The Adam Booth piece a case in point, I'm not sure we needed another piece about Booth being 'anti establishment' or 'his own man' or............... you get my point.
A path more than well trodden IMO
I also find it hard to read that someone getting a shot at a world title is a worse crime than Pac v Bradley scoring, not for me.
Glyn - the mag is on the whole brilliant, but not for me this month.

Cheers Wrist, sorry about that. Strange thing is we've had a lot more positive response than usual to this one. Oh well, here's hoping the one we're working on now might be more up your street. Personally, in terms of content, I think next month's is a VERY strong one. Let me know what you think when you've seen it please.

No bother - just a taste thing for me I think this month. I think in fairness I normally finish reading BM having thoroughly enjoyed it, this month not so much.
Probably on my period when I bought it

This is a excellent thread started by BIGMARK. Boxing-Monthly and the boxingnews are basically the only magazines i buy. I used to go crazy and buy all the boxing ones KO, Ring , boxing illustrated, world boxing etc etc.
Regarding the business of selling the magazine, its a very interesting subject especially with the internet in full flow and so many boxing forums/sites that has some very good articles in them.
Glyn has been very honest in telling us how big names effect sales etc, many Editors would keep that close to his chest.
Im not 100% sure but has this been covered in boxing-monthly before and if not could this be a feature in a future boxing-monthly mag??
i just find it very interesting the marketing, promotion and business of boxing.
Thoughts?

This is nothing new. From 92 to 95 Tyson was on every boxing magazine cover every other month. He was often on the cover for two or three consecutive months. Even behind bars he was boxing. No surprise Haye/Chisora is on twice in a row, as much as I'd love a wild eyed, shoeless and stinking Jeff Merritt cover, it comes down to whatever sells.
