I've never done what youse are talking about, not that im making any comment upon it, im just a fat wanker with a kettlebell... but when i do squats I squat with the kettlebell held in front of me, so my arse goes just below my knees, then up, bring the kettlebell in, raise it over my head, then bring it down, and then straight out again, and then squat down, and thats '1'...
anyone else do that or similar? or is that like a girls version?

No, not a girls' squat at all, I do the same sort of thing, it's a great compound exercise, I find, and I really feel it in the mid abdominal/breadbasket area.

a foam roller is a very affordable addition to any home gym. have a look on ebay, i get them here in australia for around $40.
