The Eastman thing was ahead of a comeback not his original retirement.
Collins was scheduled to defend against Joe Calzaghe - he withdraw injured (a leg injury he claimed) a week or so before the fight. As Joe was a mandatory it meant Collins was going to be stripped.... Collins didn't want that, so it prompted him to announce his retirment before he was formally stripped.

From what I remember about that contest - it was seen as a retirement pay day for both guys.
Benn was long passed his snarling best. And Collins had just outlasted Eubank & Benn in his stop start career.
Both fights kinda tarnished Benn and did nothing for Collins reputation either.

I was a huge Collins fan and was so disappointed when he pulled out of the fight with Calzaghe and then retired.
I remember at the time, Collins talked about a lack of motivation in fighting Calzaghe. Real shame, would have been a very intriguing fight.

How come the Roy Jones fight never came off, You'd have thought he'd have jumped the chance to fight collins
I do think the best fight at the time would of been Ben vs James Tony

Ha!! Well, it could be argued that Collins was better than a lot of the guys that Jones was fighting at the time....

Collins is a wiley character. He certainly knew his ability and he knew he couldn't beat Roy Jones.
Roy was never the biggest box office fighter around and this had a bearing I feel on some of the bigger fights not coming up.
Apparently, from what I read at the time. Collins hyped up the match a lot and yes he did go to the states to negotiate a deal. The square ring team listened but Collins' demands were way too much for any profit to be made. I heard something like he said 8 million or no fight.
Collins came back from the states and everytime he was interviewed stated that he tried to get the fight done, went to America and negotiate - but Jones wanted none of it. He certainly painted Jones' as the bad guy who didn't want to test himself - not necessarily the case at all.
Nigel Benn said something similar after he retired. There was a big call for Benn vs Jones after the McClellan fight. Nigel called out Roy in every press conference he could. However, it was Nigel who since said he would have only fought Roy for a set figure (and something Nigel knew wasn't viable for the fight to make money). He ultimately knew it would be a retirement fund cause he wasn't going to win at that stage of his career.

Yeah I remember when Jones fought Reggie Johnson back in 1999 it was shown live on Irish TV as there was buzz building about Collins coming out of retirement for a possible match-up at Light Heavy. Collins went into the ring and challenged Jones during his post fight interview. The money wasn't there to force the fight though, Jones wasn't big enough this side of the pond and its doubtful if he would have travelled, Collins was virtually unknown over in the states despite having launched his career there so HBO had no interest whatsoever so all talk about the fight fizzled out after that.
