I don't think Liam's a joke but he's definitely a big underdog, especially at 135lb.

Lareya, Moses, Nicky Cook - he's had 3 routine outings in his last 5 as champion.

It's like Froch fighting Rocky Fielding next.

There's almost certainly a pile of emails proving that genuine offers were made to other champions and they were all turned down by lesser promoters who clearly aren't acting in ther fighters best interests.

Walsh is rated 59th by boxrec and that might be a bit generous. The lad is at area title level. We need Ringside, boxing news and boxing monthly to come right out and tell the public that this match up and the CLEverly Coyne one are insults to anyone with a grain of common sense. If anyone thinks the two opponents have a chance then put your money on them! By my calculations the Cleverly fight is equivalent to Chelsea playing Fleetwood Town in the FA cup. The Burns fight is the same as Chelsea taking on Carlisle in the same tournament.

Joke matchup and typical FW keeping it all in house.

I was considering a pre-Christmas trip to get some shopping done then go to the fight at night but I won't waste my time. I really like burns as a fighter but I don't fancy seeing him in a glorified spar for 100 quid plus.

I know Ricky and billy will say they'll prepare properly and expect a fighter coming to win but I'm sure if they could they'd say they were expecting a quick win. Burns is a much better fighter and is proven at a much higher level

Think people are being unfair on this match up. Look at who was available.

1. Adrien Broner Fighting Demarco for WBC
USA
2. Sharif Bogere Fighting Abril for WBA
UG
3. José A. Gonzalez (Latino)
PR
4. Paulus Moses (International)Beaten in March of this year
NAM
5. Gavin Rees Fight could not be made offers were made
GB
6. Sergio Thompson Fighting for WBC Silver Superfeather
MEX
7. Ji-Hoon Kim
SK
8. Carlos Molina (Int-Cont) Fighting Khan

9. Marvin Quintero Fighting Vaquez for IBF title

10. Darley Perez Offer turned down

GB
12. Alisher Rahimov
UZK
13. Liam Walsh (Europe)

The best available the no 3 we do not know if he turned it down. Walsh makes most sense he brings fans with him people in UK have heard of him compared to the others.

Kim in the US makes the most sense as he's known stateside (he's been on ESPN a lot) and would help get some exposure, it would also allow Burns a "compare the results" with Vazquez. Thompson could also have been a good fight seeing how he stopped Linares, Quintero is fighting for the IBF title against Vazquez.

Poor old Lee Purdy
You are not suggesting that Purdy is a top British fighter are you?
I dunno, I'll have to check Horse's ratings for October to find out

Or could I be suggesting that, although not currently being one of the best fighters in the country, Purdy has a tougher fight than all of them?

Good god, I thought the title was a wind up. This is a disgusting match up. Walsh has no right fighting for a 'world' title. Just because he came in heavy in his last fight against a guy that has never performed even passably above Feather does not make him a lightweight and certainly doesnt make him a contender. He was far from convincing against Appleby, isnt ready for a Euro shot never mind anything else. Total horseshit.

After such a good win over Mitchell this has to go down as a total waste of time for Ricky. Really disappointing.

This will be the 3rd British fighter Burns has fought in a year and a half. Trying to think when there was 3 world title fights involving British fighters over such a short period recently.

I like Liam Walsh - he's talented and gutsy but in no way does he deserve a world title shot. He came perilously close to losing to Paul Appleby, struggled against John Kays and also seemed stung on more than one occasion against the Italian he fought last time out. I'm not sure Liam holds a shot too well which is a worrying sign given how harder Ricky Burns is punching.

Burns has been superb and a middle round stoppage looks likely here. There have been worse 'world' title defences - the difference is that Walsh is a known quantity to us who has arguably been already exposed previously.

Another fighter to be let down by allegedly. Burns is the most improved domestic fighter there is and coming of a great performance but gets matched up with a fighter who's fought once at the weight. Can see burns going the same way as warren's other stable star cleverley just look who he's fighting next! Time to give Eddie Hearn a call Ricky!

FW can swerve anyone he fancies into the top 15 he fancies.

Just look at that 13 year run of junk that Calzaghe had.

All you need to do is watch who enters the WBO rankings between 10-15 in the weeks prior to the announcement and you will know who it will be.

Not only the 3rd Brit, but the 3rd FW fighter as well. FW is the winner again and poor Burns is being kept busy with undeserving fighters for his title.

Joe did fight some good fighters in that time.

Look at the list I did earlier of WBO rankings.(now updated) Walsh is probably the best available on the list.

I take on board what your saying, but over 13 years and 40+ fights how was the quality average? Shocking opponents vs acceptable opponents? The average was v.poor indeed. Brando sobot was 1st defence wasn't it? Froch did Jermain Taylor in America in his first defence.

And the WBO ranking always mean zilch to me, they're manipulated by the promoters to add credence to their shows that someone completely unheralded at world level, suddenly gets propelled into a legit title shot. Look how Evans Ashira, coming of a loss at light-middle is suddenly a ranked challenger at 168 to Calzaghe for example despite never fighting above 154lb and never being world ranked previously.
