Ring was my favorite for a while.
It was still a good read even after people started going online for their boxing news, because they would do stories that wouldn't be found on the net.
But Ring started going downhill after Golden Boy bought the company in 2007, and has certainly gone rapidly downhill the last 12 months.
The latest editions of The Ring remind me how Boxing Digest was towards the end - more photos (4 pages on round card girls), larger (less text) and just generally a poor product.
They no longer offer anything that can not be easily found online.

It is also beyond any shred of doubt that Golden Boy are the real editors for Ring now - just this week Dr. Margaret Goodman went on record in Thomas Hauser's PED story that she was told that she couldn't write about certain topics anymore.
Their bias towards GB fighters is also obvious and I no longer consider Ring a credible source.
After being a subscriber to The RIng since 1993/94 I finally let my subscription run out and will not be re-newing it.


As for Boxing News, I still think they hold good form.
I would like to see them do more on their Old Timer's section - after all, they have the largest backlog of any boxing mag in world.
But overall I enjoy BN every week.


The boxing mag that gives the most reading pleasure these days is Boxing Monthly.
Like The Ring used to do, BM presents in-depth articles and reports.
I especially enjoy the ones on people and topics within the actual boxing industry.

Always loved Boxing News - in the old paper style, black and white photos and a 'cult', 'in the know' feel to it. I also enjoyed KO magazine, they had some great interviews. The Ring was very good in the early to mid 80's (it may have been because very exciting fighters were breaking through); for British fans it has to be Boxing News and Boxing Monthly but they will die away eventually - the internet is fantastic and has its consequences.

Yes, he had a degree in boxing history, all boxing historians have.

he didn't strike me as the sort of person who frequented bars and smoked cigars and chatted shit like bert, more a loitering in old book shops and dusty dungeons looking for some fight report from 1893.

I used to buy The Ring regularly from about 1985 to 1992, but I haven't bought it since.

I stopped because the quality of the magazine dropped.

I now regularly buy Boxing News & Boxing Monthly too.

I also used tolike Boxing Illustrated, but that went out of production, unfortunately.

just got the boxing news annual, what a read that is,,,well worth a tenner.
