It was interesting to see that earlier in the week he was talking of it possibly ending soon and then yesterday he just came out to say that last night would be the final one. It seemed to come out of the blue a bit.

It is what we should be expecting from a coorporation that we are paying for.
Everything about the WSB ticks the right boxes, but somehow it still doesn't make good TV. Admittedly as I don't subscribe to ESPN I've not seen the home shows of the British team but the atmosphere in these shows usually seem quite dead.
Perhaps cause the standard is so realitively even you can say that 95% of the time the fight is going to go the distance before the 1st bell. With a 12 rounder, with fatigue etc you know there is a greater chance of a KO.
In some ways it reminds me of that ill fated A1 Grand Prix thing, where the cars were evenly matched - and nations were racing against each other. It should have been more exciting than F1, but it just didn't capture the attention at all.
The reason why that A1 thingy never worked is because they tried to make it like a "World Cup" several different drivers would drive for each country throughout the season. Motorsport fans like to get behind drivers/riders, they're not into national bias in the way that football fans are so if the drivers keep changing throughout the season there was nobody to get behind plus every driver worth a shit was in a more prestigious form of motor racing.

bbc london is making some major changes - no more danny baker!!!!!!!!!!!! - this is economics and the gradual narrowing of their once wide reaching schedule so i dont think its personal or down to a dislike of our sport. but the show was a good listen.

Given that they don't have the TV rights for this show, it's about all they can do on this particular occasion.
Further, remember that boxing is incredibly niche these days. It would be nice to see them do more on the box, mind - spend a lot less on sh1tty football and F1.

i know he has his critics but that radio show was excellent . bit of a shame his destiny is tied up with piggy eyes.

Sad but true - I still cannot see why that is though. Some of the ratings on 5 and when it was on ITV most recently were very very encouraging. The fans are still there, it is still a sport that can make conversation - just doesn't seem to have a director general of TV channels with the balls to give it a whirl.
Its TV that has made it niche - even sky with their demands that main events must be for a title. That decision meant Calzaghe vs Brain Magee, which would have been a decent 10 rounder for a late notice job was called off.
It wasn't that long ago that Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya both fought decent fighters as tune ups on TV without a title being on the line (both were champions at the time) - it was deemed unthinkable that when Liam Walsh pulled out that Burns could still fight a 10 rounder.

Certain promoters might have contributed to making it a niche sport by going to Sky in the first place.

Yeah, and leaving sky to going to even more obscure channels, such as Setanta and new boxing channels.
Not sure though how the sport messed the chance with the Big two in the past few years - not sure what you mean, have there been opportunities within ITV and the BBC that promoters have not taken on? Whilst things were not perfect when Hennessy and FW were on ITV and BBC, ratings were pretty strong. Williams vs Harrison 1 got something like 11 million viewers if I am not mistaken and that was in the digital age. Stinger of a fight and ratings never hit those peaks again, but they were still solid.
Hennessy's bills on ITV were generally good, miss those nights - undercard on ITV4, main event ITV1.

Football yes but f1 they have halved the money on that by selling some of the live rights to sky
