I can't remember think may of been cancer he wrote an autobiography a few years ago I've still got it not a bad read always interested in fighters not only the world famous 1s

Michael was a great guy. He died aged 47 after battling with a brain tumour. He suffered a stroke on Christmas Eve last year (2011) and died on Christmas Day. It's poignant that you bring his name up now as we're almost at the first anniversary of his death.

A bit of advice, "mimmy123", is to get your hands on a copy of Michael's book: The Journeyman: Autobiography of a Professional Boxer. It's not Norman Mailer but it's an interesting and worthwhile read.

I love reading boxing auto's got a few good ens, Michael Watson, Chris Eubank, Roberto Duran, Frank Bruno, Mickey Duff, Barry McGuigan, Nigel Benn Hurricane Carter Holyfield. etc

Best one I've read is about Jimmy Mclarnin, 'Babyface in Hollywood' - a fantastic read, I'd recommend it.

This was a must see for all boxing fans. along with Sportsnight and Midweek Sports Special. Saw McCauley v Bassa 1 + 2. McCallum v Watson and graham. Graham fighting and losing to kalambay in London and Italy on BBC, Benn on ITV. Glenn McCrory winning his IBF title on a mad night in the north east. The world heavyweight title series from which Mike Tyson reigned supreme. Honeyghan, laing, Daho etc. pat cowdell being blasted out by Azumah Nelson and explaining to me the difference between very good and great by icing the classy Midlander. Good bouts at all levels. Great memories. love it.
can recall ITV showing the British Light- middleweight title fight between tony collins and wally swift jr on a wednesday night. A brutal fight which swift finished with an injury to his lip that looked like it had been done by edward scissorhands. He still did an interview afterwards. Still got lots of vhs recordings of some classic bouts. An archive for which i still own a vhs player All this was enough to stop me going out and causing menace on the streets of SE20 with my mates.
Can remember working nights at the superstore with a T in the early nineties and missing Steve Robinson stop Paul Hodkinson because of a double shift and my video + messing up and recording something else. Was gutted for years after, though I have just found it on YouTube so will now make up for lost time and spend the rest of 2012 watching that and some other classics.

good memories mate, The Swift fight was a tough one, and i can still picture his lip after the fight, Collins was the hyped fighter at the time.
I used to love the featherweights around that time some great domestic stuff with Sean Murphy, Gary Deroux, John Davison etc.
Then the jinxed British Super feather title, with each fancied boxer losing it in their first defense.

Some real names from the past used to be on Fight Night, great memories used to absolutely love that show- Kostas Petrou, Donnie Hood, John Davison, Pat Cowdell, anyone remember Pat Barrett almost decapitating Roberto Trevino? And Michael Armstrong throwing punches at the ref when he got stopped by Modest Napunyi?

I always thought Gary Newbon's boxing knowledge was wasted at Sky doing greyhounds and daft phone ins whilst Dave Darts just asks scripted questions.

I can remember Gary DeRoux and Sean Murphy having a real fight; unbelievable bout that was

Ensley Bingham boxing so well for a good few rds before the ole Greek tank, Kostas ground him down. Also remember Petrou v Kelly on a saturday afternoon show, a proper fight. Also Errol Christie emerging thru the ranks in spectacular style. Happy memories

i remember brian schumacher on fight night,one of early fights as he just come out the navy and signed for allegedly,good prospect him and ended up doing bird for belting his father in law and killed him. another good un i seen a cpl of times on their was shaun "governor" cummings,he could have a row him and only last year the poor bugar was brutally murdered,sad ending. thursday nights if i remember rightly was fight night,allegedly shows a lot of em.

I keep hoping someone will upload that on Youtube. It's a fight that makes Rocky seem realistic; unbelievable back and forth bell to bell action. One man would be against the ropes getting pasted by shot after shot, then would somehow roll out and reverse the roles. Unbelievable.
