Turn off the pro-Boner commentary and score the Ponce De Leon fight folks. Anyone close to greatness would have pulverized him. He barely won it.
I like the Napa example, actually very accurate in my eyes - although if Napa hit hard, fought in the correct weight class, was kept active and had good money behind him he'd have been a very good world champion in my opinion - all if's and but's though.
I'd also agree that Broner didn't look great vs Ponce De Leon, but De Leon is a hard, seasoned, world class fighter and he was Broner's first real dip in deep waters. Broner didn't impress but he did win (both on the cards and in all fairness) and I think he learnt alot that night. He's come on markedly from there, many world level guys do after a toughish night when they face their first real resistance or hiccup. He'd make mincemeat of De Leon now in my opinion.
The manner of the De Marco performance show much of that for me. Broner jumped a weight, faced arguably the best 135lb champion at the time (poorish division I'd admit) and after having a look in the first stood him on his head big style, he beat the s**t out of De Marco that night. I like Rees and rate him but I think he'll get taken apart here, he won't (IMO) win a round after the 2nd and he may not win one at all. Burns and Rees are in very different positions and Hearn has done well to get Rees the shot to an extent (and hopefully a good quality pay day) but what happens to Rees may show that Burns not going with Broner was a wise move at present IMO.
As an aside it'll be interesting to see who broadcasts this - Sky obviously deal with Rees through Matchroom but Allegedly channel have a long term deal with Golden Boy showing their US fights.
Its on Sky Sports. Should be a good fight, way better than Burns v Walsh!
A tiny little bit of cynic in me could possibly believe that Rees is being used as the passport to get Broner on Sky and thus begin to ween Sky viewers onto the next US/PPV superstar (skills, KO's, huge ego, all the talk, etc, etc). Only one here?

To be fair, the Ponce De Leon fight is nearly two years ago and I thought it was too early for Broner to step up to that level. I agree that he didn't deserve the decision. Since then he has produced 5 excellent performances. He is continuously improving and he thrives off counter boxing off the backfoot against come forward boxers like Rees. Hope Rees does himself justice but I think this will be too much for him, hope I'm wrong as I can't stand Broner.

Quite right.
And I never thought I'd feel this way and, as far as I'm concerned, I'm glad I got the chance to say that I do believe I love you and if I should ever go away, well, then close your eyes and try to feel the way we do today and then, if you can remember, keep smiling, keep shining knowing you can always count on me, for sure, that's what friends are for. For good times and bad times. I'll be on your side forever more. That's what friends are for.
Well you came and opened me and now there's so much more I see and so, by the way, I thank you.
And then for the times when we're apart, well, then close your eyes and know these words are coming from my heart and then, if you can remember, keep smiling, keep shining knowing you can always count on me, for sure, that's what friends are for. For good times and bad times. I'll be on your side forever more. That's what friends are for.

Demarco was the worst out of Vazquez, Burns, and himself. not to mention absolutely made for Broner, that was a great matchup for Adrien, you can't take the victory away from him though

Great fight for Rees to take, he has nothing to lose really and has an outside chance of an upset, though I see Broner having too much speed for him.

This fight reminds me of Barry Jones v Acelino Freitas, both Welsh boxers and both facing unbeaten punchers. I think Rees will do the same as Jones , cause a few problems early on, but get stopped mid rounds point.

Will brother want to fight another Brit straight after this? Or GBP deliberately targetting British fighters and using broner to secure a sky deal for their UK launch?

My thoughts exactly. It makes sense to introduce Broner to the UK market. It makes a future fight with Burns that much bigger (if he impresses).
For Rees, it's a no-lose situation. We know he'll give it a good go, and probably be outclassed in the end, but he's always good to watch and might even earn future paydays off the back of it.

Not a bad pay day I should think for Gavin,Broner is in a different league to any British boxer,he's massive for the weight and I can see him moving up to 140 within the next 18 months after a couple of easy defences, bigger fights and money for Broner at 140

As much as I like Rees, can't see past a one sided stoppage in Broners favour.

Fair play to Rees. Just to echo what has already been said really, his skill, toughness, heart and determination will keep it competitive for a few rounds before he goes out on his shield or the corner pull him out. I'll be rooting for Gav and hope he gives it a real go in a fight he has nothing to lose but everything to gain.

Gavin Rees will give his best for 5 or 6 rounds, but then Broner will end it, stopping rees on his feet, Broner is a bit special, once he works out Rees, he will put his shots together and break Rees down.

good luck to rees - he's proved a tuff customer for a fair while. must admit i have written him off before but no one would be happier than me to see him give broner a scare or two. and he'll believe he can win it.

Rees will look good in the beginning and will probably surprise Broner with his speed and jab. But then he'll start to slow and becomes fairly easy to hit. If guys like Watson and Murray can have their success in the middle rounds then this won't look good, especially when you think of how much more Rees is going to put in. It'll most likely be downhill from there but I'll certainly be cheering him on

I certainly don't see this being a one sided blow out or any kind of massacre as some do. I reckon if Rees puts in the miles and the hours in the gym and turns up in his best condition, he will at the very least make it competitive. Indeed, I can see Broner getting a nasty shock in the first few rounds before working Rees out and perhaps forcing a late stoppage.
Look at this another way - when Lockett fought Kelly Pavlik and Michael Jennings got a shot at Cotto, you kinda felt a little bit worried for them. Rees, not the same - he can handle himself at that level, even if I don't quite see him winning the fight.

1/80!!! I thought you were joking then I had a look. I tell you what Rees could be worth a few quid at 16s, that is big big big odds. However I just don't see him winning this fight.

Klitschkos vs AN Other aside, I can't remember odds being so wide for a World Title fight.

I would easy have a couple of hundred on Gavin at those odds,Gavin is faster than he looks and uses is height to his advantage,no way is that a true reflection of this fight.

Billy, do you know what Gavin's actual height is? Boxrec have him as 5'7 but it's been said he is smaller.

It is a very interesting match when you look at it. Gavin Rees is a very tough durable little fighter facing a young man in Adrien Broner who is a young lion of a fighter with the fast hands, footwork and a terrific finisher when he has his opponent in trouble aller Escabedo and can dismantle a opponent aller DiMarco. I think Rees will be a tough game opponent but Broner is younger faster and fresher so as much as I want to see a fourth British world Champ in Rees, Broner will come out tops on points as Rees is a tough one to shift.

Broner will win between rounds 6-8 in my opinion, if Rees trys to rely on head movement with the hands down low to draw in shots then it could be faster as Broner will be far too accurate and fast for Rees to deal with.
That's just my opinion, would like to see Rees get a W tho!
Here's a scenario, in the unlikely event of Rees winning then what would happen with Burns v Rees?
Would it happen? Who would televise? Would Rees be calling the shots coming off a huge victory?
I also wouldn't be surprised if Burns announced a big opponent to take the attention away from swerving Broner. Last time he was getting grief for ducking Broner they announced Katsidis and most people agreed it was a good fight....... Until after it when opinion changed. Only this time I don't know who that opponent could possibly be.
