Still want to see Burns in with him tho, someone who will be as big on the night, someone who will be patient and stick to a game plan. For me Rees lost patience far too early, when he was moving in the first 2 Broner didn't get anything off, someone going outside the left hook counter will take away a massive part of Broners arsenal, too many get drawn into Broners type of fight, hold their feet and then get picked apart. A good solid jab, footwork and lots & lots of patience will give Broner a 'Problem'!!

Fair play to Gav for giving it a go, though.

It's not a given that Burns will beat Vasquez. That's a tough fight. And I think he needs to look impressive for the Broner fight to happen. If it doesn't make commercial sense, Broner will go up to 140lbs.

Broner did his part last night in making it a bigger fight, at least on this side of the pond, by making UK fans' blood boil in his post-fight interview. Who doesn't want to see Burns knock him out now?

I based that on what I'd saw so far.

But afterwards, the size of him, the way punches bounced off him and the hurtful and accurate shots - made me a believer.

People have said that they thought he was easy to hit etc. I think yes, some shots did surprise him , but he was almost making a fight of it for the fan's sake.

Against a belt holder like Burns he would bring his absolute A-game, which spells bad news for Scottish fans.

I'd like Burns to win, but can't see it I'm afraid.

Previously I said he was more Lacy than Mayweather so far, sadly I think I'm going to eat my words.
I'm not surethat Broner was taking shots from Gavin for the fans Gomez he was just being pretty slack defensively thinking he could just rumble flat footed into range and tee off . He reckoned he knew nowt about Rees and was probably surprised at how Gavin got straight into him. That arrogance could come back to haunt him one day he talks about being Floyds protege but he should take a good look in Pbf's defensive rule book which has carried him a long way.You wouldn't catch Floyd taking shots for the sake of it.

Hard to bear Gavin Rees, you should be proud of yourself, you done more in 5 rounds than Eloy Perez,Vicente Escobedo and Antonio Demarco did all together  AND you probably did more than most people thought you would ever do,its just that you came up against an elite level fighter, nothing to be ashamed of,keep plugging away and youll get a shot at one of the other champs and id give you every chance :TU:
Although id fancy Ricky Burns against Gavin,i will admit Rees has a chance and also has a chance against Miguel Vazquez or the winner of the WBA title fight between Richard Abril/Sharif Bogere
good to see you made a whole lot of new fans over in the States :box:

Lets have it right, rees won first easily and second but Broner was clearly having a look and getting his timing. We also had some saying broner will win a robbery etc...

All about levels.
People were (rightly) saying it was an easy fight for Broner but if a guy asks Gary Lockett the question, what's he going to say? Do you not think he was right to be positive and to be publicly dismissive of the suggestions the fight would be one-sided?
He can give his opinion, but why the need to dig people who disagree and refer to them as (non) "real boxing people". Most of whom are the ones that put their hands in their pockets to make the game tick along. Be that going to the fights or subscribing.

As for gav, he does what he says on the tin. He should be applauded for his effort, for taking the fight and his attitude. I hope he made some good money. Better to have tried and failed than never to have attempted. In 10years time he can hold his head up and say he gave the problem some problems.

still plenty of cracking domestics fight for decent money out there for gavin. Crolla, John Murray (is he still fighting), Kevin Mitchell, Scott Harrison, Ricky Burns John Simpson......take your pick they'd all be good fights. Unfortunately they are all signed to that other bloke i think.

Anyone know Broner's weight before the fight? He looked two weight classes above Gavin.

Edit - Just found out they both weighed 150lbs before the fight.

It's a conundrum. Realistically, Burns is bringing nothing to the table. It's largely down to if Broner's people believe he is ready to move up or not. They're using the weak lightweight division as a testing ground before moving him up to where the real money is. If they think he needs another fight or two at lightweight, Burns has almost certainly got to figure. It will likely be Ricky's one and only shot at the big time, so the money has to be good but, at the same time, he's not really in a position to hold them to ransom.
I am sure Broner would like to pick up 2 more belts if Burns wins his next fight.
Lt Welter will see what Broner s all abut, but he looks very good.

Be good to see him v a Lamont Peterson type, he wont have the size advantage he carries into the ring against the lightweights.

Can't forget Broner is only 23. I would hold him back moving up another weight for 18 months and let his body develop into the weight and the routine.

No one will get near him. Burns? Broner said it perfectly last night when he said about Burns "who is he?" no-one in America knows who he is because he is the World Champion of Europe!!

Maybe the Vasquez fight will change that but I can see him saying no for an third time!

Good post Wales - I didn't see the need for Lockett's comment about "non real boxing people" - all he needed to say was "we look forward to proving people who dismiss Gav's chances wrong".... but then he sort of covered it by talking "non boxing people" predicting a one round KO - I didn't see a single prediction of that, so I guess everyone is a boxing person.

Gav did very very well, Broner is something else. Not sure I've seen someone (who isn't a particularly light puncher at Lightweight) who landed so many shots with little effect. Only way I can describe how Gav's punches seemed to bounce off Broner was like the early rounds of Rocky vs Drago (yep, a ficticious fight). Even though Rees isn't a 1 punch KO artist, it is safe to assume Broner has a sturdy chin and body, just by his non reaction to Rees' work in the early rounds.

Rock needs to be admired, for his bravery and speed, his movement was excellent early on also. I don't think it was noticed but I am sure Broner made a prediction in the corner after the 3rd of "two more rounds and I'll pick it up" - I am sure thats why Broner didn't really go for it after the very hard KD in the 4th.

I don't want to do Rees a disservice at all, but I felt people were being harsh and disrespectful to the fighters on Broner's resume pre Rees. There was nothing on Rees' record to suggest he beats the likes of Demarco and Ponce De Leon. Infact, how about Rees vs Demarco! That would be a good eliminator style match up.

So Burn's best wins are against a Puerto Rican, an Australian and a South African and he is World Champion of Europe? Why cant people just have a balanced argument without feeling the need to insult one fighter?

Do you think Burns will win his next fight, mate? I've not 100% made my mind up. I'll try and watch a bit more of Vazquez between now and making a final specific prediction.
Like you, I have not seen much of Vasquez, but from what I have seen he is beatable by Burns plus there is no way Frank risks Burns unless thee is £££s involved.

If Burns wins then he has to fight Broner, and I give burns a better chance than anyone at lightweight.

Big difference in getting behind someone you WANT to win as opposed to thinking they will. yes i had a tenner on Rees, because the odds were good but more importantly i wanted him to win sooo badly, it doesn;t get away from the fact that deep down i thought he would lose.

too many ponces on here get on their high horse about having superior knowledge to others

Most people on here:
a: wanted Rees to win
b: knew he wouldn't

Nothing wrong with that, and also i love how you KNOW that burns would lose....do you? really?
Who is talking about getting behind their fighter? You Muppet. I wrote that many people thought Rees had a real chance, which I find strange.

Enzo Calzaghe thought Rees would win........

As for how do I KNOW that Burns would suffer the same fate? Have you ever seen Broner fight? Get real matey. Burns will do well to last past 7 rounds.

Essentially this shows Rees's level.
He is top European class, which is not competitive against elite world class. I thought Broner was more of a Lacy, but now I think he is better than that.

I think it is more to do about their personal relationship than their shared nationality - one that
they don't share anyway - Enzo is Italian and he probably still is.

Spot on. It would have been hard enough for Enzo to make an objective judgement on this one privately, let alone in public. Barry McGuigan has the same problem when asked for an opinion on any British fighter because he is so respected by those boxers. He feels a responsibility to be positive, I think.

Stand corrected...Enzo thought rees COULD win, not WOULD win.. Rees could only ever be dangerous if he smothered broner, to stand off broner was a mistake and that is when rees got caught. lockett decided to employ rees in 'stand off broner' tactics, this was wrong in my opinion and is not the way Enzo would have played it.

Not that the end result would have been any different, Broner is a beast, an arse but a beast.

I think the closer you are to a fighter the more (sometimes blind) faith you have in him. In the same interview enzo said he hated showboaters! He obviously didnt see many of joes fights.

Broner is the very best at lightweight nd would beat Ricky; he'll move up and do very well at light welter and welter; he's the frame and is a natural. Gavin did his very best and showed loads of bottle; what a game man he is! I hoped he'd knock the braggart out but Broner is exceptional. Gary Lockett did the right thing and the Rees camp ought to be proud of how they behaved and fought. Rees came across well in the post fight interview and Broner is genuinely quick - with his fists and his wits; he's a bit of a dick but is funny.

You make a valid point. Rees had more than his fair share of success last night.

But I do recall Floyd getting rocked more than once on his way up. Demarcus Corley was one i recall. It's just lately Mayweather has picked on smaller, or older opponents lately, making himself look mustard.

I do defo think that Broner strolled it a bit and didn't bring his A game.
