There’s definitely one comparison to be made… If Lennox had rematched McCall the next day…and if Price was to rematch Thompson tomorrow…I’d back them both to win.

One thing…If Price was/is as “chinny” (pick your own definition I am not incurring the wrath of Datsue) as that Thompson punch suggests then he’d have been knocked out half a dozen times already.

Maybe it was a fix. The ref was well within his rights to draw that knockdown out for at least another 30 seconds.

Yes, but he's taller and that's what matters these days.

I don't think Price can be written off just yet. If he can get past a few more reasonable heavies without falling apart he could still have a world level future.

Those were not flash knockdowns; Lewis was badly hurt each time.

I think, given the chance, he could've recovered a lot better than Price ever would. Lewis was still capable of taking a shot. You would'nt have a heart attack everytime a punch was thrown unlike you will with Price

Dan, against Rahman he was down for the full ten count mate.

I mean, I'm not contending that Lenny was more vulnerable than Price, not at all.

But it's hard to say he "...recovered a lot better than Price ever would" when he was spark out, mush. His handlers dragged him up at about the count of fifteen & had to hold him upright against the ropes.

I mean, unless you think the Rahman shot would've killed Price. Which given what we saw Saturday, would be entirely possible, but in poor taste.

Where have the shorter guys gone? I think all of the current crop of top 6'5"+ guys are eminently beatable by shorter guys just not by the 6'5"- guys who are currently active.

Hopefully the shorter guys are all watching tapes of Holyfield vs Bowe II, from which they are learning to slip the bigger man's lead, double-jab to break up his rhythm & then sidestepping out to avoid being leaned on in the clinch.

Somehow, however, I seriously effing doubt this.

Yeah, well I know what you mean. Anyone can be knocked out at the end of the day, noone has an invincible chin. But I don't see the same vulerabilities. Lewis could take bombs from Mason, Lewis, Tyson, Vitali etc. Price more than likely would not have - in hindesight of course

Have you ever considered watching Lewis-Rahman 1? As Datsue said, he was out for ages.
Nah haven't seen it for years to be honest, I will do when I get time. But I think my point still stands, Lewis could still take a punch

Just watched the fight and yes he was out cold. I never saw the loses live so don't remember them well, I just remember years of Lewis taking a punch. I don't think the vulverabilities compare to be honest

Playing devils advocate in relation to Price by all accounts the punch perforated his eardrum, as we all know your ears control your balance so its hardly surprising he was all over the place. Do you think he should be given the benefit of the doubt?

Not unless he got a perforated eardrum versus Cammarelle, STiverne, Fury & that dude who hit him on the break in his debut.

In which case he is the world's first example of being "eary" & therefore your point is still moot.

Nah he had wobbling 'all over' syndrome. Thompson would've thrown bombs and he wouln't be able to parry them

I'm not saying he is George Chuvalo but maybe the perforation of his eardrum was more the reason he was all over the place, rather than being chinny, especially as the punch didn't land on his chin. I still have major concerns of his ability to take a decent punch but he wouldn't be the first fighter to be stopped as an amateur, Larry Holmes was stopped as an amateur, as was Tyson as an example.

Man, are you high or trolling something? Lewis clearly couldn’t continue after McCall and he was on floor for the full count Vs. Rahman. ‘Flash knockouts’, Jesus wept. Do you call ‘delayed reaction’ floorings ‘non-linear KOs that have yet to happen’?

Macho, that sounds about right.

Have to disagree mate. I thought as heavyweight World champ Lewis should have been allowed to carry on in the McCall fight. Look at his reaction, it was similar to the big guy in prizefighter.

He was heavyweight champ, not some limp necked novice.

His reaction was to stagger around and to lean on the referee for support at the count of nine. If the ref wasn't in that position Lewis may have fallen over.

So, to spell out for you what I already wrote, why was he wobbling all over the place vs Cammarelle, Stiverne, Fury & that dude who hit him on the break in his debut?

Or did he get a perforated ear-drum each time?

Were Holmes and Tyson dropped numerous times (i.e. at least 5) and hurt and stopped in multiple bouts in which they weren't dropped? If so, were these instances spread out over several years?

I want to defend Price. He obviously doesn’t have an anvil in his chin…only Desperate Dan had that physical anomaly…

But that shot was so innocuous that I can’t believe he has made it this far if that really is the sum of his punch resistance.

I guess he’s a guy with a below average chin who also got hit with a ear detonating freak-show slam.

The am's can be excused when you are young. Almost all will have been stopped at some point. Henry Wharton got stopped in one by Glenwood "the real beast" Brown in the unpaid ranks and he has one of the best chins i have ever seen. Price, on the other hand, is a 29 year old man at title level. It looks really bad for him.

Understandably, few will agree with this on a boxing forum, but I think there's a real case for saying guys like Price shouldn't box at all. This is clearly a guy who is neurologically susceptible to significant damage from blows to the head, even from quite trivial blows. Seemingly an innocent colloquialism 'chinny' in fact means that your brain can't take the punishment its receiving.

Guys like him who continue to box are storing up a whole world of trouble for themselves and that is true irrespective of whether he does go on to be a champ.

More generally I think there's a real lack of understanding, or perhaps denial, about just how bad for your health boxing is. We say 'oh his punch resistance has gone' as though that's equivalent to Gerrard's pace going. Well no it actually means you have suffered so many concussions that your brain is exponentially more susceptible to them. Which is catastrophic. I mentioned this on another thread, but they've just completed studies on 36 deceased NFL players and every one had brain damage and those guys wear state of the art helmets.

We also rightly want Danny Williams to retire because he's getting beaten up but think Marquez and Pacqiauo can go on forever because they're still quality. But your brain doesnt care - blows are blows irrespective of whether you manage to twat the other guy back enough to win.

The template for every fighter has to be to get in, achieve your goals, make some money and then get the hell out as quickly as possible.

The flip side is that guys who get KO'd easily don't get as badly damaged as fighters who can soak up punishment. This isn't a tickling contest.

:TU:

Massive generalisation but it's the lads with iron chins & leaky defences & big hearts I fear for.

Tommy Hearns don't sound like that because he was one-shotted by anyone. He sounds like that because his chin deficiencies rendered him unable to defend himself & his enormous heart & conditioning kept him taking a beating when he should've been safely sparko'd.
