Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
Yup, I'll read a post here and there for the unintentional humor. Like when he said Richard Steele was gun shy from the Taylor/Chavez backlash when he let Hearns/Barkley continue. But his incessant desire to argue I rarely indulge.
Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
I’d imagine this to be a close fight. But with a conclusive ending either way. Sanders’ size going some way to negating Patterson’s greater ability. I think Patterson would be the favourite but he wouldn’t always win this matchup.

Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
Initially looking at this fight, I would heavily favour Floyd to outbox him... Though a Sanders victory is possible if improbable.
On second thought, I really wouldn't bet against Floyd in this one.

Possible, but appears to be the minority viewpoint this time 'round.foxy01 wrote:Though I wouldn't neccessarily call round 1, it definitely only ends up KO win for the mediocre Sanders. Too big, too fast handed, and too hard a puncher for the pumped up Patterson to see the final bell.
You seem a sensible enough person, but have a bit in common with some acquaintances that I think highly of.
One of their character traits is that though they are often wrong, they are seldom in doubt. (Not that that trait is the leading reason for my high opinion of them.)

A small, weak-chinned champion up agàinst a far bigger puncher (bigger heavyweight too) than he ever in his career. I think it obviously would be a crushing loss! Lol

Oh please,
I am often wrong, and even sometimes quite often in doubt, but not this time.
As I said even by his mediocre standards ( in his own era ) there is nothing in his resume or his ring MO that makes me see Sanders, possibly losing to someone of Pattersons stature, and capability. Conversely nothing in Pattersons resume makes me think he could live with someone with the size, handspeed, and power of Sanders.
Similarly, I am totally convinced if we take things to a completely different plain, Ray Robinson was a far superior fighter to Ali. However if they fought each other I'd take Ali to win 10 out of 10.

Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
This can't be serious. Patterson would beat Sanders fairly easy. Do you think Sanders would beat Moorer as well. Comparisons with Liston are nonsense. Liston had much better boxing skills. Patterson was better than Rhaman. Sanders will lose the skill factor here, he wont intimidate Patterson the way Liston did (mind you nor would anyone else). I think Patterson beats Sanders 19 out of 20.

Now see, according to my math...a Patterson win does indeed seem to reflect the majority opinion. Just sayin'

OK, just for laughs, let's list the world class HWs that Sanders beat.foxy01 wrote:Oh please,

...
Wlad
I guess you could try to sneak Smokin' Bert onto the list, but considering that he had recently lost to the 40+ yo Hercules, it's a fair bet that he wasn't close to world class anymore.
Now lets list the world class HWs that Patterson beat.
Moore
Ingo
Machen
Chuvalo
Ringo
I left out a number of others that I would consider world class just to make this look a little more reasonable, including his draw 3 fights with Quarry and Ellis which could have just as easily have been wins for him.
Yes, Sanders could punch and he had pretty good handspeed, but if you leave out his KO of Wlad, there is nothing else on his resume that even suggests he's worth a mention in any list of notable HWs of the 90's and 00's. Experience does matter, and Floyd clearly showed that did figure out how to survive good punchers, while Sanders never displayed anything in his career other than the ability to land solid shots on Wlads chin.

Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
That's because besides his loses and the Wlad upset he doesn't have a resume. JL Garcia was 6-4 and knocked out Ken Norton, but I don't think he could beat Patterson either. He also didn't have a resume outside of his one upset win.foxy01 wrote:Similarly there is nothing on Sanders resume to make even self delusional Americans think he was ever troubled by a 195lb fighter.
BTW, I don't think there are too many "delusional Americans" on here who would say that Sanders wouldn't have had a chance. Obviously size does matter, Sanders could punch, and Patterson certainly wasn't the most durable HW. However, most rational people recognize that there is a huge difference between a long term world class HW with many wins over the best HWs in the world versus a guy with virtually no accomplishments outside of a single win.

Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
You have to admire the pathological trollism on display here from certain posters.
"Corrie was never troubled by a 195lb fighter."
Um, Floyd was never troubled by a flabby out of shape 230lb fighter.
Corrie was troubled by a flabby out of shape fighter. In fact, he was laid out clean by one. One who no one at all regards as a puncher.
If he can lose to a flabby out of shape fighter, he can lose to puncher who competes at the peak of physical fitness.
If he can gas against a muslcebound Hasim Rahman, who was notorious for his lack of stamina, he can gas against a man who could outlast physically fit men over 15 torrid rounds.
This is a mismatch.
I'd love someone to explain how Patterson was "pumped up" at his weight? Or was his actual, natural, 'real' weight the weight he turned professional at, at SEVENTEEN YEARS of age? Wow. That would make him utterly unique in the annals of boxing.
But I'm sure our resident fistic scholar can explain everything. Tell us, specifically, how Floyd was 'pumped up' at his adult weight, O boxing genius.

How well did Johnny Nelson do against Corrie? Answer... Not very! He's a similar size and far more durable than chinny Floyd. What a silly thread!

You're seriously comparing a negative, safety first British journeyman who couldn't punch to a world champion heavyweight puncher?polecateddy wrote:How well did Johnny Nelson do against Corrie? Answer... Not very! He's a similar size and far more durable than chinny Floyd. What a silly thread!
Do you realise how 'silly' and short sighted your post makes you sound?

Watch Nelson v Thompson. Nothing negative there mate. And Floyd got bounced off the canvas nearly every time out. Corrie would have killed him.loaded_gloves wrote:You're seriously comparing a negative, safety first British journeyman who couldn't punch to a world champion heavyweight puncher?polecateddy wrote:How well did Johnny Nelson do against Corrie? Lewis? Who was talking about him? I think there are quite a few "delusional Yanks", including myself, who could envision Lewis beating Marciano.foxy01 wrote:Hahaha I love delusional Yanks. The above is almost, not quite but almost as fvcking stupid as Marciano would destroy Lewis.

No mate, suggesting Floyd Patterson would beat Corrie Sanders is almost as idiotic. The Great John L wrote:Lewis? Who was talking about him? Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
How about Joe Louis? He was only about 200 and also got dropped more than a few times. Does Corrie also handle him pretty easily?polecateddy wrote:No mate, suggesting Floyd Patterson would beat Corrie Sanders is almost as idiotic. The Great John L wrote:Lewis? Who was talking about him? Yeah. I'd only only hesitate in predicting a massacre from say Liston onwards.

Why Sonny? He was only about 210 and barely 6' tall, only slightly heavier, but shorter, than Louis.polecateddy wrote:Yeah. I'd only only hesitate in predicting a massacre from say Liston onwards.
Frazier? less than 6' and about 205, about the same general size as Louis although much shorter.
They both sound like Sniper fodder to me. What do you think?
Re: Floyd Patterson vs Corrie Sanders
Tyson wasn't that tall either, and got bounced off the canvas by a CW ffs. Corrie KO 1.
