On Hagler's website there's a photo of him with Minter at a recent event. Doesn't look like there's any hard feelings. I think Hagler is satisfied with the way things turned out for him. He earned that legend status and no one can take that away from him.
Hey Viking, you really gotta get yourself a copy of the bout. IMHO, no contest, just one of the most satisfying one-sided butt whuppins you'll ever see. Hagler was spearing with the straight left and getting to the taller Minter. Minter seemed to lose his cool and pursued Hagler. Paid dearly. Goody Petronelli calls Minter a "damn fool" in the SI article. By rd. 3 his face was about to fall off.

Steve is a gent. One of the nicest and most down to eart guys in Boxing. Loves the game, lives in Watford.KOJOE90 wrote:I'm sure I've heard former Pro and Eurosport TV Commontater and general man about Boxing Steve Holdworth say that he doesn't like Minter at all.Eric the Viking wrote:All in all, Minter sounds like a rather vile character.MightyWarrior wrote:Hagler is a different class from Hopkins, who can forget about ever getting ranked near Marv in the all time great middles.
I've also heard many people say that Steve Holdworth is a gent.

It's a good three round fight. An overconfident Minter really seemed to think he could walk straight through Hagler. No idea what gave him that idea - maybe it was Hagler's less than impressive previous title fight.Eric the Viking wrote:Well, I suppose that kind of rampant arrogance is justified, given that he held the world title for, oh, all of 6 months.knockout artist wrote:Minter is one of the most aloof and big headed boxers i have ever had the displeasure of meeting.
I never saw Minter/Hagler - how was the fight going at the time of the cut stoppage?
Anyway, BIG mistake. Marv hardly missed a punch and opened up something like four cuts on Minter's face.
Like KOJOE says, Minter did land a great left hook at one point, and Hagler defintely felt it, but he had one of the best chins in middleweight history, so that was never going to work.
Some of the crowd seemed to think Hagler had used his head to open up the cuts, which was the "reason" for the mini riot I guess.
I can remember Harry Carpenter commentating "And the crowd a throwing objects into the ring! I've just been hit on the head by a bottle!"
Terrible scenes. It was years before Hagler finally decided to come back to the UK, after saying he never would, and he discovered that he's more popular here than probably any other American fighter.
He was even working for the BBC for a year or so.

The US telecast was anchored by Howard Cosell. I don't know how familiar you in the UK are with him, but he was probably the most obnoxious, reviled sportscaster in the States at that time. I'm sure many American viewers who saw the bottle barrage were shouting, "Aim for the guy with the bad toupee!"

Wasn't it Ali or Holmes who knocked Cosell's toupee flying during a ringside punch up?crooked nose wrote:The US telecast was anchored by Howard Cosell. Howard was definitely as arrogant as you could be, but he did have a great sense of the dramatic - I can still hear him yelling:
"Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!!"
Is he still alive?

The honor of knocking off Cosell's convertible top actually goes to Scott LeDoux, who was outraged by a very bad decision in the Don King sponsored US Champions Tournament. LeDoux's outcry led to the whole deal collapsing in scandal. Cosell's network, ABC, played innocent.
Howard continued broadcasting NFL football and boxing, then quit the boxing telecasts after the Holmes-Cobb mismatch. Cosell was ready to retire anyway, but of course he had to make a dramatic, self-righteous exit. Tex Cobb said he'd go 15 more rounds with Holmes if Cosell would agree to quit Monday Night Football, too.
Cosell withdrew from the public eye and died about ten years ago. Even right after his death, former colleague Al Michaels described Cosell as "the most evil man I ever met."

I've got quite a few fights with Howard doing the fight commontary that I've collected over the years. I've also read that he was not a very popular man.
Howard did seem to be very fond of Ken Norton though.

Yes, Howard had some favorites, Norton among them. Ali helped make Cosell's career. Their mock-insult exchanges were a must see. Cosell to Ali: "You seem quite truculent." Ali: "Truculent? Well, if that's good, I'm it!"
Before the Foreman fight, Cosell said, "Ali is not the man he was ten years ago." Ali responded, "I talked to Howard's wife and she says he's not the man he was two years ago!"
Back to Hagler-Minter: I've always wondered why glass bottles were allowed in the arena. Seems like an invitation to trouble. Is this still permitted in the UK? Or were the bottles sneaked in?

There's a clip of that on th When We Were Kings documentary.crooked nose wrote:Yes, Howard had some favorites, Norton among them. Ali helped make Cosell's career. As for glass bottles, many venues don't allow them anymore that goes for a lot of live music venues as well.
