I like Johnny Nelson, he's pretty inoffensive to me and does a decent job, I wouldn't like to see him sacked. I agree sometimes he comes across awkward when doing ringside but he's likable enough to get away with it.

The commentary is what needs changing IMO, I know its a tough job but the Sky team seem to see what they want to see and always drive an agenda. Plus people like Watt, who sometimes offers great insight, are way too negative and can ruin a good fight.

In saying that, most other channels commentary teams don't appeal to me either. I'd rather they just call the action that is actually happening, not what they thought was going to happen before the fight began.

What I mean is he can spot things in a fighter if he's in serious trouble etc, whereas Adam Smith and the like start shouting trouble after a straight forward jab.

Watt is a very good analyst - but he focuses way too much on the negative than the other fighter doing the good stuff.

I find the most amazing fight atmospheres have been drowned out with his complaining and moaning.

It's coloured many a good night of action, when I have returned home from a great fight, to find the replay almost being a completely different occasion thanks to Jim being in a cynical mood.

Johnny is very good, I think. He is a bright, insightful and warm guy, who also gets the best from fighters because they like and respect him and so open up. His knowledge of ther sport, because of his long, varied and very successful career as a boxer, is second to none. I just don't understand people grumbling about him. It doesn't make sense to me.

Nelson/Adam Smith is gruesome pair. I prefer Bunce/Lillis....... what a dire situation.

Under contract with Channel 5 isn't he ?

He was extremely irritating on Fight Night International, dominated the post fight analysis and cut in when Barker (in particular) was speaking. Would have liked to have heard much more from Barker and Murray and much less of Nelson.

Really? He turns up all over the place. I must have heard him commentate on literally every channel that shows boxing in Britain. Radio and podcasts too.

like Johnny he is knowledgeable comes across well IMO.
The gloves off special he did recently with collins calzaghe eubank and co was well chaired yes he makes a few mistakes but he is better than Glenn .
I find Adam Smith far more annoying.

I think its because its a personality thing and you know that most people quite enjoy watching Johnny or are'nt that bothered by him.

I seriously like all the British pundits. Even if they're not lighting up the screen it's just interesting to hear what they have to say.

Nelson is really good. Jim Watt is the best for me in terms of analysis.

People just don't get it do they ? Producers run programmes presenters present. Don't care who it is you can't just go in and spout whatever you feel like.

It was a general comment mate.
All of the presenters have a difficult job.
I watched Ringside filming a special recently and sat in the production room.
The presenter was asking a question and in his earpiece the producer was shouting camera instructions. At the same time the director was telling him the next question to ask.
At the same time the presenter is concentrating on the answer to the question.
I used to slag presenters off all the time but having seen what's involved I don't anymore.
Add to this that they can't go off at a tangent and ask controversial stuff but work to scripting.
Try it mate for a laugh I did once and made a right pigs ear of it.
Some are better at it than others I give you that.

He pretty much does. Seen him commentate for fights on Eurosport too.

Nelson is still poor, even after 5 years in the job. He's obviously uncomfortable in the postition, and it's painful to watch him, straining at the leash to get a word in at every opportunity.

Don't really care though, as the whole show is rubbish anyway

To be fair, Nelson craps over anybody they have on Channel 5.

No.he was as inspirational a boxer as anyone. To go out at 39 undefeated long term world champ like he did and only forced out by injury is an incredible achievement.
His autobiography is the best boxing one I've read. I don't think he's suited to a tv anchor role on ringside but put him in a suit and he's my first pundit every time. A great character who looks like he could still beat half the world cruisers.and it don't get any better than Johnny as a roving reporter

Agreed mate. I work in TV (a different area) but have had some experience in a TV studio and there's a hell of a lot going on in the gallery and behind the cameras which the viewers at home don't see. The director barks instructions to all members of the crew who are all listening to the same feed, so having to decipher instructions, questions etc, whilst remaining calm on the surface and delivering a good presentation is a really tough task.

I actually like the Sky set up and although Watt is negative at times, I find his analysis and knowledge of the sport is a welcome addition to the commentary during a fight. I think that Nelson is good fun and I enjoy the banter he shares with the rest of the team on Ringside.
