The truth is, title aside, what does Mitchell have to offer in terms of pulling power, he's hardly charismatic is he?

Besides the title, Mitchell has SHOWTIME backing him.
U guys have got the cart before the horse;
Since when does the challenger dictate to the champion?
Isn’t the champion supposed to get the larger cut of the purse?

In an interview By Curtis McCormick on Boxing Talk.com Jay Larkin Speaks Out!

http://www.boxingtalk.net/pages/McCormick246.htm
“We're not pro-boxing because we have this altruistic love of the sport.
We're pro-boxing because we are a for-profit business and our subscribers love boxing.
So if boxing is healthy, we have a good business, and we do everything we can to keep boxing healthy.”

Frank should take a 101 from Jay. 8)
U can also forget Gatti, he doesn’t need Hatton.

BTW, If Pinto was a mandated eliminator by the WBO,
why weren't they getting equal pay?
and why wasn't it rescheduled? :-?

A mandated eliminator doesn't go to purse bids does it?

Blue, you're being naive mate, if you think that being the champ decides your level of pay.

DLH has gone into every fight he's had as the bigger earner champion or not.

How much of a draw you are is what dictates purses, not belts, it's not how it should be, but it's how it is.

At the end of the day, this is one promoters word against another. Who knows what the facts are?

Unless one or other of them opens their books we'll never know for sure.

Since 1958 when Ray Robinson cahllenged Carmen Basilio for the MIddleweight title and again in 1987 when Ray Leonard fought Marvin Hagler and several times in between those years and after.

Question, Just how much pulling power do you think Hatton has outside of England and the MEN Arena?

Posted: 15 Apr 2004, 05:46
by jamesmcdonnell
More than you might imagine...

I'm going out on a limb here, but I would venture to say that Hatton probably has more fans in the America than Mitchell does.

Mitchell is a good fighter, but he has no real fanbase that I am aware of.

Exactly. While I'd love Ricky to prove himself as amongst the best fighters out there, until he is allowed to fight the best that isn't going to happen. Outside of Manchester he's still got a lot to prove to people, so to think that he should have financial advantages over people like Mitchell, that's being naive.

Ricky isn't as big a draw in the States as people are imagining, Showtime pulling out of the June 5th show is evidence of that, he's expendable if not against the right opponent. Say what you like about Mitchell not being marketable, but the thing about him is that he's fought, and is willing to fight, the best. He is a name, and a recognised one. As things stands, all Ricky is in the eyes of most people is an unproven home fighter.

That isn't the case, I've spoken directly to Jay Larkin in this regard before, and whilst Hatton isn't exactly the next Naseem, his fights have done well on Showtime in the past.

You can be a great fighter and have no fan base at all, Pernell Whittaker was an all time great, but he couldn't have filled a phone booth with his fans.

he got over a $1m for that fight.... Kosta got $900k
I don't know were you read that but Tszyu signed a 5 fight deal for 15 mill, Even in your dollars it is still more than 900,000.

I'd like to see those figures in writing, I find it hard to understand how he would have gotten more than Tszyu, as Tszyu was the unified champ, and the draw of the two men, and it was a mandatory defence as I recall.

Wasn't it a unification fight? I think Mitchell was IBF champ..

Whoops.

Tszyu was still the bigger draw, though to be honest, neither of them are a huge draw.

 Careful that limb doesn’t break with all that weighty bull crap U put on it.
Outside of Britain, Ricky Hatton has no real fanbase either.
Nor is he is nowhere close to being a dela Hoya. (Control the purse.)

Naïve? Go back & read Jay’s complaint in the interview, :o
This is $Professional$ $Boxing$
What makes a title attractive is once U win it, U call the shots and get the larger cut.
Otherwise the title doesn’t mean shit.

That may not be what’s happening in Britain but it still holds true in most parts of the world. 8)

Mitchell doesn’t need Hatton, He has Lejia, Spadafora, Bazan, Valenzuela & Weis; all of them are well known and acceptable to US audiences. Most of the aforementioned are Hispanic, better known and followed than Hatton in the Americas.

With Gatti-Dorin, Mayweather-Corley & Harris-Urkal already scheduled and Tszyu mending on the sidelines, (waiting for Mitchell & Gatti before he retires.)
There’s no where for Ricky to go other than Pinto or Witter.

Both Ricky & Witter have been painted into corners by their management and Who did that?

There’s only one way out. :o
Show the rest of the world who the best Brit is because we’re on to U.

Ricky will just have to be satisfied being a big fish in a small bowl, taking on 2nd & 3rd level challengers.
U get what U pay for, same as it ever was. :D
Most of the Brit press should be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to happen. :(

i was talking about the first fight 3 years ago when they both had a piece of the title.... i think i got the figures from boxing news so i presume they are right.
I am sure Kosta would get a lot more if or when they fight again....

The mere fact that hatton has created so much interest by only defending the WBU Belt which anybody with any ounce of sense must realise isnt actually worth anything.Because hatton sells, his promoters have prob reached the ceiling as far as the live gate is concerned. So unless the live gate or TV money increased there would be absolutely no incentive for the promoter to increase the risk of his fighter getting beat. That is top long and short of the deal. The promoter will prob have a predefined profit percentage to wok with. Total income 50% for him 20% for the main draw 10% for the opponent 20% to cover the rest of the bill
