Fundamentally the man cannot fight. He can potshot low level boxers on shows that make little money, but as far as him ever being among world class? It's ridiculous. I think Nathan himself has learned that after last night's brutal wakeup call.

For all that dancing around, that stalking the ring prefight with the smug, knowing smirk on his face as if this was going to be some Archie Moore-style display of boxing genius, he looked no better than some of the clueless journeyman Kovalev routinely bashes out. He's simply never going to have the chin or acumen to win at world level, or be a genuine world champion.

The whole episode is another embarrassment for the awful WBO title.
x2. No point wasting time and money chasing out the world's best trainers like Khan did, just to be exposed again when he steps up to world level.
Let's not pretend Kovalev is the only LHW that would beat Clev, he wouldn't make top 5. We all know about Kovalev's power, but he didn't break a sweat, was relaxed and comfortable throughout, slicker, more accurate and clearly levels above. Cleverly isn't near that level - this isn't like Hatton going ten rounds with Mayweather but being out of his league, this is miles away.

If the same thing happens to Fury, he will have about 20x the purse to soften the blow.

Clev can still be a pest to some opponents, and if Murat can still find work then so can Nathan.

I can't see him headlining ever again though. I forecast Gavin, Saunders and Frampton undercards from now.

I think it would have to be back to the drawing board maybe go for a highly ranked fighter they believe they can beat. I just hope it isn't Enzo.

One defeat to a world class operator isn't the end of the world, no one is claiming Matt Macklin should retire after losing to Golovkin because he's not the best in the world. I think they could put him in with Ovill, then maybe a guy like Chilemba or Bellew again, or take on Fonfara who just beat Campillo on FNF and see where he's at. He can be a paper champion again and tell his grand kids he was a 2 time world champ or something; no shame in that. :)

Was very impressed with Lockett's corner work last night, not gonna happen but Clev needs to get a decent trainer like him if he wants to re-build. He needs to use some of his academic brain to forge a boxing brain.

Honestly cant see why people are hinting towards him retiring, there is still plenty money to be made in boxing for Nathan Cleverley as far as im concerned. Ricky Burns losing early in his career to lesser opponents than Kovalev never stopped him from going on to make a good career for himself. There are lots of good examples of fighters doing so (and bad of course) but I cant see Cleverley crashing and burning due to being defeated even although it was such a convincing defeat. He will still compete at world level again in my opinion as I see him as being well above british level.

He can earn well from Boxing. He should not even consider retirement. His degree isn't a guarantee of earning big dough either.

He can land another title shot. He has a win over Bellew for example who is lined up for a WBC shot.

A change of corner might do him good.

It was an insane level of denial he was in, reminiscent of Khan running out to try bang out Prescott, sheer insanity. I think Tyson Fury is headed for the exact same baffling (to him) world crashing down scenario.

We in the UK have to concentrate on developing fighters the right way, rather than protecting them and building up these degrading paper champions.
Good post. He did seem to bank on himself having an iron chin which proved to be absolute nonsense.

I wonder how he'd fare against Braehmer now.

Sometimes a result or performance cant be looked into too much until there is more evidence to compare it against. Its quite likely that this Kovalev could go and blow other belt holders away in a similar fashion, if he does then it will make this loss look less concerning.

Is there any chance he'll just knock it on the head? I'm sure there's a boxing fan in 'The City' who'd give a maths graduate ex-pro a job on a derivatives desk or something. He'd earn more than he will as a fighter.
I was talking about this last night. Im pretty sure Cleverly does this as much for enjoyment as he does the money that comes with it. He'd be aware that with a degree in pure maths he could get a top job but I dont think that's what it's about for him.

If he talks to the right people he could score a decent number in London. There is still a lot of nepotism in the city. He should consider retirement.
From my understanding a 2:2 degree isn't exactly a sure fire way of earning a packet these days.

Isn't it ridiculously competitive out there?

If he were to retire from boxing I would advise him to use some of the dough he has earned so far to set himself up and work for himself!

Yeah a 2:2 isnt great. The plus side is that it's in pure maths though which is a valued subject when it comes to complicated financial systems

You're missing my underlying point. It's ridiculously competitive if you're a nobody. If Cleverly spoke to the right people I'm fairly confident he could get a job in the city and be set. Like I said, I don't know the guy, he might not be in the slightest bit interested, I'm just looking at it how I'd look at it in his shoes.[/quote]

That's with anything in life though. Just because he's a 'famous' boxer doesnt mean someone would give him a good gig.

There are enough people interested in boxing from that walk of life that he should be able to network himself into something.
Yeah but at the end of the day they'll be looking out for their best interests aswell and thus would want to employ the best person for their business.

Fantastic post, I agree with all that.

I'm a big Cleverley fan but the Russian wiped the floor with him last night, and I don't think the Russian broke sweat or got into his stride - he simply went at Nathan, bashed him up, and easily dismissed him. If the new champ has more than one gear to him, and can keep up that sort of offensive for 12 rounds, he will really take some beating.

Nathan didn't just lose, he got dispatched with ease. On that form, he wouldn't be a decent sparring partner for Kovolev. A sobering moment of clarity for anyone who falls for the "Cleverley's the world champ" bollox. He's beaten some good European fighters. The Shawn Hawk episode was a disgrace though and if that passes for a legit world title fight then the sport is fxxked.

Paul Ryan has got a good set up and he doesn't have a maths degree

Kovalov is just a beast of a puncher no one would withstand those.. He is fast and has a high output and is very tall for the weight.. If he can learn to hit and not be hit Iand stop war'ing all the time he will come back stronger.. I think the Enzo Mac fight is a ideal next fight big money and he wins very easily. Then he needs to look at a couple of fringe World Level fighters then maybe Hopkins or shumenev!! Maybe Froch will want to fight him now still a huge fight..
God know, he needs to stay away from him. Enzo had a purple patch due to getting good matchmaking off the money Joe's shows were bringing in. He needs a tactician not someone who will scream at him to do better without any advice.
So you're saying that: 1) Joe C. was not a wonderful, talented fighter? or 2) His dad had NOTHING to do with that?

I just know Wales is not full of boxing trainers and the Calzaghe gym is low-key, and not a Hollywood meet-and-greet.

Preface: I KNOW YOU DID NOT MAKE THIS COMMENT, okay? But I will address it below.

BTW, Lennox was in the "Euro League" at one time, as was Winky Wright, Sergio Martinez, the Klit Brothers, and many other legendary fighters. Is that an insult on the competition or something? How about the "Cuban Circuit", or the "Argentina Boxing League"? You get my point...right? Every country/area/continent has bums and also wonderful fighters. you see world-class fighters from almost the entire continent, so think before you speak my friend.

Cleverly fought a better man at a better point in his career. His time may come....or it may not. It depends on his determination.
I'm a bit confused? I've not said anything abou jc. All I said was that the one-style enzo is all wrong for clev. He's trying the jc model now but is a different fighter

If Dean Francis gets through he next fight, it could be a fight that's made. Clev's extra speed would probably give him a late stoppage.
