Just my opinion, but few people really know who Tyson Fury is. I have a load of mates who i would describe as casual sport fans, regular football watchers etc and they have seen Fury a few times on channel 5. After a fight, most of them have said " He looks crap and overweight " and whilst that sounds like a typical off teh cuff comment from the unitiated, it kind of sums up what most people think outside of boxing forums and ifilm videos etc.
I agree that no one particularly rates him, in fact some abuse him at every opportunity, but people know who he is, he's one of the best known fighters in the country, there's plenty that know Eubank Jr as well because he's on channel 5.
I beg to differ mate. I think you would be suprised at how many people wouldn't have a clue who Tyson Fury was. Do a little excercise. Ask people you don't know that well if they have heard of Bellew, Froch, Macklin, Murray, Barker, Groves, Mitchell, Chisora. After they have said " Substitues for Oxford united ??? " ask them whether they have heard of Hopkins, Jones, Mosley, Mayweather, Broner, Pacquaio ? Again, you will be suprised at the blank look they give you. Why ? Because people don't watch or pay to watch people they know nothing of and haven't seen fight. It's a problem. Would you pay £15 to go and watch a football team you had never heard of ? Football is subscription AND free to air and shows quality games aswell, like the champions league, Europe league, league cup and the F.A cup, which is a fiar bit of free to air football All free to air boxing is shite and that is a rarity and that is the difference.
People have heard of Mayweather, Pacquaio and Hopkins because of Hatton and Calzaghe, although they probably have very little knowledge of their careers since then. The average casual fan knows who Tyson Fury is, but might not know Bellew, Macklin, Murray, Barker and Mitchell. Chisora is well known because of the Haye fight and Groves because of DeGale, they're not household names but people know who they are.

Comparing boxing to football is unfair, football's the biggest sport in the world and people have their team that they support and would go and watch. There's very few games outside of North End that I would consider going to. Boxing has to be compared to other individual sports like tennis, golf etc.

I agree. And how many people could name five darts players except Phil Taylor? I bet more people know more boxers yet darts is held up as a shining example. When its done right, boxing is huge. Haye-Fury will have the nation gripped next month whereas the month after, at the same venue, Bisping-Munoz will not even be mentioned in the mainstream media. Boxing is doing fine.
It's not doing fine at all. Haye and Fury won't have the nation "gripped" as you say. Fury is a car park brawler and again, people don't really know who he is at all. It's become a niche sport and it's major personalities are virtually unknown outside of anorak sites like this one. Darts has never been an equilvilent to boxing, perhaps it's major time was with Bristow, Lowe, Jocky Wilson etc, but you should be making comparisons with football, cricket, Tennis and golf, not darts !! It's a sign of how low it has got in the publics imagination that you are comparing it with darts as a hallmark of it's supposed success.
Haye-Fury WILL be huge. I must have a different set of mates than you but Fury is known by virtually every man I know between 20 and 50. None of whom could name a cricketer or golfer and could only name Andy Murray because they all hate him and want him to lose. Hatton, Haye, Mayweather, Khan, Fury, Froch, Klitschko, Pac etc are known by nearly all working class men. Mayweather-Alvarez will do huge numbers in America.

Mickey, you definately must have a different set of mates to me, because to say that your mates can't name any tennis players, golf players and cricketers, especially after the ashes series strikes me as being very odd indeed. You live in the boxing bubble. Haye - Fury will not be massive at all. It will do good numbers, but it won't be like Benn-Eubank. I think you are one of those people who are just compelled to be contrary.

Unfortunately for Kerry Davies and Al Haymon the controllers at HBO eventually went over Kerry Davies' head as it was alleged that Haymon was using HBO to showcase his stars against mediocre opponents and so the controllers severed links with Goldenboy opening up HBO to other promoters.

IMO the same will soon happen to Hearn and Smith.I see the controllers at SKY coming to their senses and ending this neposistic relationship in the interests of 'quality control' and sharing out dates more evenly to different promoters.

Goldenboy used to enjoy a near monopoloy at HBO and many in the sport couldnt really envisage the collapse coming to pass but just like ancient Rome, collapse it did and the same will happen to the relationship currently enjoyed between Eddie Hearn and Adam Smith.

IMO the sooner the better for the development of the sport in general.

There is not a great deal of competition to be fair, plus the other promoters have signed with allegedly. It is something I don't see happening for a very long time.

I am been deadly serious. None of my mates would dream of watching cricket or golf or even rugby union for that matter. They could not even tell you the rules of cricket. Like you say, different worlds. None of us ever played any of those sports at school. The teachers would have told you you were queer if you played union. It's still like that in loads of places in Yorkshire.

I couldn't tell you the rules of Cricket either lol...........

Fair enough bud, but i still stick with what i am saying and my mates aren't shandy drinkers either !! A typical remark from my mates about Tyson Fury is this " He looks crap and he's a fat bastard ". Short and sweet really.

Ask Forcefraser for instance, as I know where he's from and the way people are round there. Will Fury-Haye be big in Lupsett or will people be watching the Tennis or Golf. Or even discussing Rugby Union... Or my friend Tijuana1 on here, bet he's never watched or played any one of those sports in his life. Fat Git will know the score too, but has probably seen all sides as he is well travelled. Don't assume everyone is interested in something's just because they get coverage from the southern based media. If one of our lot has win a game of cricket or golf we simply skip the pages in the paper or if Murray is on in the pub everyone cheers when he loses a game!

I never assume anything...........

But equally, i doubt that your average casual fan is quite so discriminatory in terms of what they watch or read as your mates seem to be. You mention the north as if that is all that counts and that the south dictates it's preferences on the north with it's media bias. The north is a big place and not all of it's residents are as predictable and stereo-typed as you say they are. I think most casual fans could easily name five or six tennis players, golfers or cricketers. Anyway, it's all about opinions blah de blah :OhYes:

great thread.

boxing is screwed. fighters are just used to earn promoters money. lets see what happens to eddie's fighters when they have peaked or dont even reach potential. they will be thrown to fights with awful terms and sold down the line.

he doesnt care and he knows nothing about boxing, if he wasnt born in to it he'd be trying to blag his way in to some chap essex club after a shift selling 2nd hand cars.

most boxers need a smack of reality too. darren barker you are not a wolrd champion, despite the belt you have. you fought a very average opponent for a belt that means jack.

Why doe they need a smack of reality? Its a great achievement, means a lot to the guys doing it and their families, I enjoyed watching it. So rather than 'jack', it actually means a lot, to a lot of people.

Lighten up mate, its not all that bad.

I don't think it's a case of him lightening up, he is just saying it as it is, abiet his language to describe his thoughts is perhaps not to your taste. Darren Barker is an ordinary fighter and he has just won an alpha bet title and is a paper champion. Four seperate world champions is ridiculous. WBC, WBA, WBO & IBF world titles, when everyone knows that the man is Martinez and Barker was stopped in that fight. If there was a single boxxing organisation and Barker was competing in it, he wouldn't even make the top ten. Four world championship belts devalues the title of "world champion" and he couldn't beat the man, so he fights a guy who is rank average and claims a version of the world title. People are paying through the nose to watch two average fighters battle it out for a title that has no validity. All that will happen now is that Barker will get a re-match with Martinez, lose, pick up a bigger pay cheque and retire. People can dress it up however they want, but Darren Barker is no Marvin Hagler, he isn't even a Nigel Benn, he is more Richie Woodhall and you ask people who Richie Woodhall is, they won't have a clue. Barker is in that class.
