Ok, but who with any talent ever tried it? For me, a great lump like that, getting inside and working the body is a smart move. I don't think for a moment that Rocky would knock him out clean; he'd be in there whaling away to the body with hooks, and I really think it's going to do the job.

It's just a matter of how long it will take Marciano to chop him down. The best realistic scenario for Valuev is that he somehow goes the distance. He is not going to stop Marciano and he sure isn't going to win a decision.
It really goes down to this; Marciano was great, and Valuev was mediocre.

I'm sorry, but as a strategy for a 188 pound guy it's got to he doomed. For one thing Rocky would constantly be walking onto shots and increasing their impact. Its a sort of name bias. Rocky was a great fighter in his era and Valuev wasn't, so he automatically wins.

Not exactly the strongest comp. Fast Fres KD'd Etienne 8 times.
A well past it Mike Tyson, who would go on to lose his next 2 bouts was able to KO Ettienne in less than 2 minutes.

polecateddy wrote:Etiennes last fight was getting mashed by Tyson. It just bothers me that you all can confidently predict a result for 188 pound Rocky, when not a single heavy ever had any success against Valuev charging right at him.
Valuev was a known fighter because he was f*cking huge. He didn't hit as hard as guys who were 80 to 90 pounds lighter than him. His technique was decent, but nothing to write home about. He was hard to hurt due to his gargantuan size, but that's not really a surprise.
Valuev would definitely cause problems to a guy like Rocky due to his massive size advantage, but I think given their accomplishments in the sport, the respect must be given to Rocky that he could find a way to beat a limited big man such as Valuev.

And what heavies tried?

49 seconds, right?

I believe so. Also, it wasn't Ettienne's last fight. In response to polecateddy's "Ettienne's last fight was getting mashed by Tyson" comment.

Ah, missed that. Right you are.
