I met him in a nightclub the week that SKY sacked him for not wearing a tie. Gary was a really nice guy, a true gent. He chatted to me for about ten minutes about boxing and then bought me a beer, before showing off his skills on the dance floor.

I can't see Mason winning this. He's been dead for more than two years.

No it's not, is it? Sorry, I'll hang my head in shame.
Poor Gary. He died literally round the corner from my parent's house. I think I was staying the night when he died. So he died only a few hundred metres from where I was sleeping.

You really get a clear idea about the type of men you're conversing with here when they are cracking lame playground-level gags about dead boxers.
I'd love to see a troll like Steve Doc having a laugh about Gary Mason's tragic death in front of Lennox Lewis or Frank Bruno.

Gary Mason would have a field day with some of the top heavies around now; he was very quick handed for such a well built man and he was very game and tough; he really kept on trying against Lewis and his eye was awful, he took some massive punches flush and kept on winging. Mason would have beaten Chisora; I'd have put money on it.

I'm a fan of both Bruno and Mason being from the UK. But both were slow handed and a little clumsy. Bruno in particular after he bulked up over 17 stones.

Mason never made that much money from boxing, did he?
It's shocking really, when somebody like Audley became a millionaire.

I think that Gary made good money and invested in a jewelers and it didn't do as well as was hoped; I can imagine he'd have helped his friends and family who weren't earning well and the money does go quickly.
To be fair to Audley; he got a million pound advance from the BBC after the Olympics; he fought well to get the gold and cashed in and who could blame him?

Oh, I don't blame him. I mean, what was he going to do? Ask for a decrease in pay?

I get what you mean

He weren't ever going to say; 'That's a bit much, I'll do it for half a million'; Gary Mason was an excellent boxer and Audley was an excellent amateur who had some good wins and earnt a lot of money - fair play.

Yes I believe it was and then Gary's eye condition was diagnosed. If Foreman wanted him its a sign Mason was a little limited and appeared beatable.

Beatable in genuine world class
