Ali was essentially duped by NOI.

They were a bad bunch of people but they were offering a take on a voice that up until then had been kept quiet for too long.

I don’t blame Ali for getting involved with them. But it was a case of trading one set of racists for another.

It's pretty easy to find an AP report. Subscribe to newspaperarchive.com:

Find a newspaper that was an AP member, and go to the date you cite. You should find an AP report in the paper, copy and post it, and you've proved your point. If it's not in that newspaper, go to another one. Hundreds - maybe thousands - of newspapers are AP members.

26th February 1964 - The day after the Liston fight Cassius Clay announced that he has temporarily changed his name to Cassius X.
6th March 1964 - Cassius X and the NOI guy (forgot his name) publicly announced the name change to Muhammad Ali.
