This would make a great domestic fight.
I'm in the camp that has doubts about how high a level Mitchell can compete at - he's had his chances before and not performed. He is probably better than commonwealth/domestic level but needs to prove he deserves another shot at stepping up.

Ricky should buy a camper van and go round England beating all these guys to shut them up. Billy can drive with his can of tennents in the cupholder and Ricky's gum shield in his sporran.

There was a time when Mitchell would have put the Benito's and Lora's away like he did impressively against Mendoza.

It'll be a good bout; I though Derry looked jaded when boxing Coyle but he came back well to beat Curtis in style. Mitchell is a class boxer but not the most dedicated or stable; I'd not bet on this one - every punch from Matthews looked hard v Woodhouse and Kevin fell apart dramaticallv Burns.
Though Ricky does deserve to be ranked at the top of the lightweight pile in Britain by a yard or more he has not looked to belong at world title level his last 2 bouts; he's been lucky to still be champion and we'll have to see if his jaw fixes as strongly as before the break; if it does he has time to really show what he's got; regardless Beltran ought to be first to box Burns.

Has Mitchell v Matthews been announced or is this all just speculation at the moment?

What is the problem with these fights??? Does ricky earn less or somthing??
Its nothing to do with money mate,I personally want Ricky to fight the very best LW out there and as it stands no other British LW is anywhere near that level.

He's the same level as Derry! Domestic. Kev gets filled in every time he steps up. Badly.
If every fighter fighting for a domestic title is at the same level we should get 50/50 fights every time. He might not be world class but his levels above Derry

I'd say Murray was European level and he beat him. Mathews has never beaten anyone at that level and has been stopped when he has stepped up there and below that level.

This is about Mitchell v Mathews but somehow ends up about Ricky Burns.. Let's be honest here this is nothing to do with a World Champion it is 2 Good Domestic level fighters in what would be a cracking fight. Both have ambitions to be World Champions but none of them will unfortunately although with Derry's heart I wish he was.
I would take Mitchell to win this fight by stoppage. I would be wanting Derry to win though. Domestically LW is a great division don't think Ricky is in that equation they should all fight each other.. My pick is Flannigan to be the next big LW star from the uk.

The same Murray that was lucky against Al Hamidi and the Spanish chap?

Levels IMO are not always literally about the belt your fighting for, it's about pedigree, natural ability and heart, although derrys heart and professionalism is probably higher than of mitchells I think mitchells pedigree and natural ability puts him way in front of Matthews for this fight ! Yes Kevin has let himself down once his stepped up for what ever reason/excuse ! But even those crushing defeats are experiences he will learn from. I'm sure it will be a good fight but if it goes past round 9 or isn't a wide points win for Mitchell I'd be surprised

I've got to laugh when people always try and defend KM, he simply got beatby two better fighters in Kats and Ricky, he made excuses up for his first fight and said he was in the condition of his life for the second, same result!

He actually said he was in the condition of his life for both, and said AFTER the burns fight something just wasn't right on the night, for me once bitten twice shy, I said clearly before he fought ricky I will NOT buy any excuses, I stand by that for the future ! However, he has to gain something from the losing experience and I still believe he can win a world title. Time will tell

You must be a very, very big fan. After seeing Burns struggle so badly(and arguably lose) to two guys who are nowhere near the best in the division after destroying Kev, what makes you believe he can win a world title?

I give Mitchell the edge, but I've done that before, to my detriment!
What say you?
It wont be for the Commonwealth title. Mathews is mandated to fight Richard Commey and if he goes for Mitchell he vacates!

I dont know. Prescott was atleast a fringe world class operator and Murray had been a european champion. Derry when he went up to european level got stopped so I dont know.

But it depends on the fighter on the night - there have been some fantastic boxers at Euro level and there have been some pretty hapless ones (who are well connected). Matthews could win the Euro, he is a very capable boxer. Mitchell v Matthews is an excellent match up and could be a very hard bout to judge.

Yeah it could go either way. Mitchell is the tidier boxer with a good punch and Matthews has a dig on him too. Both can be vulnerable around the whiskers or conk (Derry) but I just get the feeling that Matthews is fighting like a man with something to prove where Mitchell seems to be cruising.

Yeah his nose got splatted I think but I'm sure he would love a rematch.
