I'd imagine they get a discount on the arena too - use it several times a year and there's bound to be a % incentive.

Various advertising sponsors will foot some of the bill too: there's logos all over the place.
Delayed foreign tv sales - Germany, Sweden and a few other countires will pick up the rights I think ( whichever country Hatton's opponent comes from for instance, unless it's Alabama USA - likely BTW)

£250K each is about right for Hatton and Calazghe wages I reckon.

Pinto was allegedly getting £60K, so a 4 week notice job might be a lot less.

Even at a loss, SN is hoping to end up with a least the IBF world title, and keep the ball rolling with Gomez, Hatton and co.

Ricky Hatton £300K or thereabouts (for instance)
Opponent (50k)

Other promotional costs 100k (wild stab in the dark here)

Ticket Sales,
70 quid is too high an average, more like 50 I would say.
16,000 x 50 = 800,000
Sky TV Money 500k?

Total = 1.3 million in
Total out 1 million
Profit 300k for Frank.

These are obviously not well informed figures, but they've got to be in that region....

Cazlaghe, Johnson, Hatton and his opponent may be on less than these figures too, due to the lack of showtime money.

I'm no authority on this subject, but I'd like to see your figures knockout artist.

may be so but seeing as most the lowest ticket price is 30 quid and the highest 150 most would be in the middle bracket which are 60-80 quid in the middle levels I would say the average is gonna be higher and its 18 thousand sold out aint it?

Still leaves frank with a tidy sum? its feasible it still runs at a profit.

Yeah, another 2K @ £50 is £100,000. Plus sponsorship by the likes of Poker Million or whoever I suppose. There's probably an awful lot of costs we haven't considered though. Anyone who's ever been involved in running even a very small business will know that there are a million and one things you have to spend money on that you never thought of when ypu were just picking up your cheque every month.

obvious omissions

Other fighters pay, wouldnt be too much really but it'd add up.

Programme takings - gotta be high, damned things are expensive at the best of times!!

I'll bet FW is having a chunk of the bar (food and beer) takings too, any smart business man would take a cut.

Other merchendise, he'll be having a sizeable cut of any other merchandise on sale.

I paid nearly £4,000 to hire out York Hall. MEN must be best part of £50K, plus security etc. I reckon the average ticket is £45 and i'm sure FW gets a budget from SKY at the start of the season to deliver X amount of shows. I reckon SKY would put up 250-300k, not 500.

The venue usually insist on keeping bar takings etc.

My reasoning involves more than short-term profit or loss. Obviously if it's clearly going to make money regardless of the shittiness of Hatton's opponent that makes it more attractive for FW. But here comes my point about the uncharacteristically tough matchup for Calzaghe, which is now the lead fight on the card. If Calzaghe were to lose in non-disputed fashion, it would hurt his future earning potential, as any chance at a mega-money fight vs. a proven top guy would evaporate.

Watch it - that kind of statement might be construed as libelous by Fast Frank's paid attack dogs. ;)

i think calzaghe will win this to :TU: johnson comes to fight and calzaghe loves that :D he doesn't do anything out of the ordinary u know what ya getting and calzaghe loves that to.

johnson's only threat is that he throws a lot of right hands and he's busy and calzaghe is vulnerable to the right hand and he's up a weight division but calzaghe should know too much i fancy an 11th rd KO. :P

Well you've quoted me now, so technically you're being libelous asweli. We're in this together now, and if I go down, i'm taking you down with me! :D

i really cant see where calzaghe can go with this fight... if he loses which i dont think he will then, hes going to be stuck at domestic/european level ie shitty paydays against guys he could easily beat.

if he wins in a few rounds everyone will critisise the match up saying johnson is too old etc. if he wins in great style after say 8-10 rounds then no one will want to touch him, even more than they dont want to fight him now.

if he wins on points looking crap then he'll be criticised further for not putting his man away earlier.

no matter what happens with the fight not being screened in the US then Calzaghe is denied coverage there amking fights against the guys who matter harder to get

now dont get me wrong i like calzaghe and genuinlly want to see him reach his undoubted potential but i just get this horrible feeling that unless uncle frank finally puts his money where his mouth is and offers serious money to the names calzaghe needs for a defining fight, money that they cant refuse and taking the fight in the states, then he's in danger of turning into this country sven ottke. mediocre fights against opponents he can beat, selling out his hometown and with a country that adores him (wales). and that would be a genuine shame for joe and welsh boxing.

Now that's one sure way Joe will not get critisised. To beat Johnson in a few rounds is undoubtedly a brilliant result. And the tape would make it's way to the US, and get screened on Showtime too.
Not that I think he's gonna win that easy - Johnson is one tough SOB.

I'll forgive Calzaghe some of those dodgy defences, just on the back of his great win over Mitchell. But yes he needs to get a move on.
Tarver defintely, after he gets whupped by King Roy.

I think Tarver is going to get an allmighty ass-whupping this time round. Not like Griffin did, because I think Roy has slipped a bit since then, but it's going to be one-sided and brutal.

I said before the Jones fight that Roy was taking a big gamble coming down from heavyweight so quick, and shedding all that muscle tissue so fast, and I was right. He looked like an old man in there against Tarver, and blatantly only had enough energy to squeak through the fight.

This time around, when Tarver tries to unload, Jones won't be there and he'll open a can of whoop-ass on him.

...to use a distinctly un-British phrase. ;)

I hope you're right, but I wonder if with Tarver it's more a question of his simply being a tall, skilled, awkward southpaw whose style will again trouble Jones the second time around (I assume Tarver will have some new tricks up his proverbial sleeve in the rematch, as well). I tend to agree that Jones having to rest on the ropes and let Tarver get his only really effective work of the fight in there was due to weight-loss-induced weariness, but in any event we only have a few more weeks to wait before we find out.

Well, all but a few words and phrases such as "loo," "knackered" and "might I bum a fag?" (Except perhaps in parts of San Francisico, where the latter phrase is quite popular. ;))

Don't feel bad - we ripped off lots of stuff from other languages, too. But then again, y'all stole your language from the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Geats, so we're just emulating you.

Having said that, writing for an American boxing site is definetly having an effect on my writing.
