Where would you draw the line? What sort of "safety net" would constitute a moral hazard, encouraging boxers to "spunk" their money away?

I get where both columbo and Aden are coming from though Teddy; some of the top level boxers make an excellent living at it and live the high life, if there were a fund set up who would have first dibs, the journeyman who had hit hard times after finishing or the fellow who'd speculated on the stock market, bought property and then divorce brings him low? Where does the money come from?

A union wouldn't be there to bail fighters out if they waste their money, but to educate them. We've seen the trouble Ricky Hatton had after retiring because he didn't know what to do with himself, a union could be used to show fighters the opportunities there are for them once they retire, whether that be in boxing or out. If every fighter paid 2% of their purses in it would cover that, maybe even via managers taking 23% rather than 25%. A boxer's career can end very quickly and if they haven't saved money then they have to look for a job, which in some cases they've never had to do and they have very little work experience.

Buy we know, unless he's just pretending to be a right-wing blowhard, that Aden believes that ALL societal safety nets are inherently evil; allowing the feckless to flourish and wallow in their own turpitude, whilst uber menschen like Aden have to struggle alone in the untamed wilderness of the "free market", standing alone on their own two feet, spouting their "pulled myself up by my own bootstraps" bullshit to the benighted little people.

I think I remember that Barry McGuigan attempted to start a boxers union a number of years ago and it came to nothing; the majority of boxers do not earn big money and 2% of £1000 is £20 saved; some of the novice boxers or journeymen can get less than that - I don't mean to be facetious but what difference would maybe £500 do after a boxer retired after say 20 bouts? I appreciate that information is the key but most boxers I know of have boxing as a second income, some box under assumed names to avoid certain situations...

I've not got a problem with charity if people want to help others out. I just don't like the idea of anything mandatory, especially if it's run and supported by people like you and your comrades.

i see tim witherspoon in an exhibition fight a few weeks ago with steve collins there as well collins got in the ring and answered a few question and he jokingly called my a wanker for asking who was better maike mccallum or sambu kalamby ,he said why did i bring up 2 guys that beat him. any way the exhibition was really light sparring rather than a real fight, i wouldn't worry about collins he'll be ok

Kkong events poster mentions nothing about it being an exhibition or light sparring session etc so are you saying that the public are going to be conned then ? The public really need clarification so they can decide whether to part with their hard earned cash just to watch an exhibition IMO

Boxers should look after their own money, if they want a financial advisor they can pay for one like others do. I'm not sure what kind of 'safety net' we're proposing here, is there anything similar in other self-employed professions?

Trouble is, a lot of boxers, especially in the past were taken advantage of by people touting themselves as financial advisers.

I think a lot of the modern boxing stars are a lot more savvy, they take control of their livlihoods, often having a stake in the promotion, and getting paid on the viewing buys and a cut of the live gate, and have the acumen to invest in viable businesses. Modern sports stars are so much better handled than they were even 20 years ago.

However, take an 18 year old kid who didn't pay much attention at school, and throw him into the shark infested waters of boxing, and it's not surprising if he ends up relatively poor at the end of his career.

I disagree.I think he has a fire in him to box and he's probably got himself in half decent shape for a 49 year old and just wants the thrill of fighting again.these fighters have this fire and ageing is a sad fact.we all have to accept we are not in our heyday when the tome comes and I think Steve knows that.that's why he is content to just compete.he has money.just wants to fight

Danger is, at 44 (ish), he'll be a marked man.

These cases should be looked at and a sort of PFA set up to protect pros interests when they're in game? Far too many end up potless.

44? :o

I bet Collins wishes he was only 44!

He must be either mad, skint or both.

PS: What happened to the Roy Jones Jr bout?
Apparently Steve out priced himself, because Jones substituted one Celtic Warrior for another, as Jones is set to face Bobby Gunn.

I know people are making this sound like a tragedy, that Collins is doing this, but at the end of the day... I wish Semi-Pro boxing was commonplace in America; it would serve as a real breeding ground for ams wishing to turn pro, and keeps down on their luck fighters a means and a way to keep making money and putting food on the table.

Amateurs are fighting on these cards to make some cash and lots of novice pros boxing under different names so they can get bouts and tick over moneywise too.
