They compare in as much as..... They believe(d) that can beat the best fighters in the world.
Degale has only lost a close decision against Groves so far, which Clay almost did against Doug Jones.
I love the way you get behind these British fighters.

I'm sure Degale thinks he can beat Carl Froch. So what do you want him to say? "I can't win." Get a grip man.
I hate all this boasting in boxing. He's nowhere near Froch's level, so should stop saying what he can do.
It's not exclusive to DeGale of course, but he does like to talk shite about what he can do. Whether people want to hear it or not.
And whether it's true or not.
He's an obviously talented man; he lost a close decision to another very good fighter, he acted like a dick a couple of years ago, he's come back from injury and is doing alright; DeGale will continue to develop, he trains hard and puts boxing in a positive light; I wanted Groves to win as DeGale had got too big headed but that fights been done; I hope he wins again and again and sets up some big British showdowns - as time goes on Froch will deteriorate and Groves and DeGale improve.

Again, Ali was a special case. Problem is now, a lot of boxers try to be Ali without a fraction of his wit or skill. (And, if I'm honest, I've taken dumps with more wit than DeGale.)
These days, when celebrities are admired purely for being celebrities, I guess boasting before you've done anything is seen as a good thing. I can't stand it.
If you can beat the best, do it. And we'll all watch you do it. Boasting is not required.

James DeGale acted like an absolute arse in the lead-up to the Groves fight, and it won't be forgotten. The fact that he was born on the same island that I was, doesn't mean I should like him.
You act like I'm the first person to insult a British fighter. DeGale deserves it the way he has acted in the past. I was defending David Haye previously, if that makes you feel better. Though his boasting his pre-fight boasting is almost as annoying as DeGale's.

if I was degales promoter knowing he has a silited small fan base id try to put fights on in areas where there doesn't seem to be many top level fighters in that area like the north east who don't have that many good pros and even less top boxing shows! theres a few up and coming now if you include Bradley saunders, simon vallilly, josh leather and the Dickinson brothers and glenn foot! with mr Maloney retiring I thing dickinsons are now free agents so to put them on a north east show including degale, eubank jr,galahad, fury would do well up here as theres no big shows going on at all!

He believes he's at the same level as Froch, just like Froch thought he was at the same level as Calzaghe, when he clearly wasn't.

Boxers since the bareknuckle days have boasted. Frank Bruno said he was going to beat Mike Tyson. It's called positive mental attitude. But now you mention it. I don't think fighters should use PMA, I'm going to write to DeGale and tell him from now on, he needs to say.... "I don't think I'm going to beat Carl Froch."
Ha'way man ILikeBeer, give your head a shake.

An Olympic gold medal is worth bragging about and certainly shows that you are above proficient in your sport; he didn't get his in a lucky bag. The majority of posters on BoxRec are pretty committed boxing fans who know that a loss for a boxer doesn't mean the end of the world and that a boxer can be better for it; also because someone was unpleasant and a bit of a cock at one time doesn't necessarily mean they are horrible. DeGale has made some mistakes and that's clear but I can imagine there are worse people and boxers than him around.

Let me clarify.
When I said; "Boasting before you've done anything", what I actually meant was; "Boasting before you've done the thing you are boasting about". Badly phrased perhaps.
I'd may be forgiving of a boxer boasting that they'd won a medal, when they
had won a medal. But, for example, it a person was giving it the large that they're going to win a gold medal before they've even been entered in the olympics it makes them look douchey. And even if they were boasting after the event, it's unneccessary. We've seen that he's won a medal. We watched it, does he need to remind us that he did it? It's much more impressive if a person achieves something, and then shuts up about it. It makes it seem more impressive if they're not going; "Look what I've achieved" every two minutes.
For me, we're misunderstanding the difference between confidence, and just talking shit. Any sportsmen needs belief in their abilities to succeed, or they won't succeed. But if they have confidence in their ability to succeed, why do they need to convince everybody they are able to do it? If they can, do it. We'll be all the more impressed if you do it, if you haven't made a big performance out of it beforehand.

There's a difference between believing it, and saying it in every interview. Confidence, real confidence, comes from belief in yourself that's so strong you don't need to convince others that you're correct. People that boast often need validation that what they're saying is true.

So, what should he do? He genuinely thinks he can beat Froch, but according to you, shouldn't say it in an interview?

I agree with you for the most part; I don't like braggarts and blowhards very much either and much prefer the person that does the job and then gets on with the next one but they are few and far between. The more people that notice the man the more are likely to watch him either to win or to lose; there are many bombastic 'look at me' sorts of people around and the brash thing will appeal to them, the more reserved will want him to lose. As far as I'm concerned he is very talented, a southpaw with power and skill and is ambitious - I don't like him necessarily because he is English but because he can box; I think Groves is a class boxer and I think if they had 5 fights one would win 3 and the other 2 - they are well matched. DeGale ought to be judged more on the boxing and not on his gob, he tries too hard to promote himself when that's not his job his job is to box.

He seems to of quietened down a lot lately. I think he recognised that he wasnt coming off very well and has toned it down. In his defense I remember seeing an interview where he said that looking back he knows he went to far in what he said to Groves. By all accounts though, everyone that seems to of met him says that he's a very nice guy so there's got to be something to that. I think he genuinely hates Groves though and that showed in the build up to there fight.

It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I made the connection to those poor kids. I've always used the word to mean 'div', rather than what it actually means.

Probably.
I see what you're saying, Groves doesn't have much chance of beating Froch. There's such a clear favourite in it, you wonder if it's PPV worthy. I didn't order DeGale vs Groves.
I may go and watch Froch vs Groves in the pub, but will probably cave and order it at home. After a few drinks won't have to walk any further than from my living room to my bedroom. Besides, I feel Froch deserves a few pay days, with the career he's had.
I was planning to refuse to order Haye vs Fury on an anti-PPV stance, and watch it in the pub. But the decision was made for me, when the fight fell through.
