This is certainly a possibility sometimes he loooks like he isn't putting all the power into his shots and maybe they jusy want to get their money's worth. Two things are certain though and they are that he should be able to knock these guys out if he is to be a future world champ and that his power will improve with age.

If they are serious about fast tracking hughie to the world title then its about now that they need the likes of tom dallas, then john macdermott. then we will know where we stand with hughie.

could he handle macdermott?

Hughie fights for free, and his coach/dad/Peter Fury also pays the opponents purse.

For any promoter he cannot lose - he gets a fight for free, and can also use the Fury name and infer that Tyson might also turn up and do a turn on the karaoke !
They want people to buy tickets, not run for the hills.

This is a personal goal for Hughie and its great to see a young man set high standards for himself and that can only be applauded and should be encouraged.
IMO when you look at the record of Mike Tyson his people got it absolutely right, timing is everything in most sports look at the the scene when Mike started and you can see what they did!. Mike Tyson had 18 fights in his first year and 10(11 bar 1 day!) in his second year. It was not until his 20th fight when he boxed anybody of note and that was James 'Quick' Tillis. His next 8 opponents where not exactly household names and then he won the title against Berbick who never did anything after that apart from win the Canadian title. Mike Tyson was a great boxer but credit must also go to his background team who did a fantastic job and his financial backers who allowed them to do it.

Now I am not comparing records, boxers or styles and it is just my observation!, so far but Hughie has had 11 fights and barring injury should reach 14 -15 by the end of the year and have perhaps another 2-3 within his first year. So far he has already boxed McPhillipin who was a former British champion, I know he disgraced himself (IMO) but the lad offered him the fight in loads of time to prepare. He has also boxed Darch a 7-1 fighter at the time and for someone who has only been a pro a few months learning the game that's not bad.

He still has another 8-10 learning fights and is only just turned 19 as a Heavyweight. At the end of the day he and his team believe in what they are doing, the goals they set and are prepare to finance it themselves. As for quality over quantity I think who he has been in with so far has been the right quality for where he is at in the learning process. In only his 7th fight he took on Perkovic who only 4 months and two fights before took Dimitrenko (ranked 7 in the world) the distance over 8 and had him down on the way, Hughie finished him in 5 and never looked in trouble. To be fair he is willing to take a chance and fight higher ranking boxers, the trouble is now are they prepared to box him?.

I know Peter Fury is on record saying that they have stated their goals but if Hughie is not ready they wont but him in which is fair enough. He has also said he has already offered two highly ranked British boxers the job but both have asked for two much money.

Hughie has a lot of talent (they don't give world youth goal medals away for nothing), that talent will come out in the ring as he learns his trade as a professional.

At the end of the day he is British and a great young prospect lets get behind him and pray that he achieves his goal. At least he won't be boring, complain about his toe, pull out because of fights because of injury all the time!

TOP YOUNG PROSPECT  :box: :TU:

I've nothing but respect and admiration for what Hughie is doing, but having watched his latest win in its entirety I have to say it was a poor performance. He boxed with his arms down, at a distance, and spent much of the time just swinging away. His youth, superior physical advantages, ambition and style gave him the victory but when I watched the fight - and I say this as a fan of Hughie - I was a bit surprised at his total lack of stance or composure. I know he's a raw novice keeping busy but I would have thought that by now he could pretty much maintain the stance of a professional boxer through the rounds. He didn't in this fight, he just stood with his hands low, leaning forward (WTF?) towards his opponent and throwing most of his punches from the waist up.

Like I say, I am a big fan and I enjoy following his progress. I hope he goes all the way. I just expected to see more progress in this fight, what with all the ring action he's been getting this year.

As well as this fight, he's on the DeGale undercard on the 16th and has fights lined up on the 23rd November and 6th December.

Still think Hughie could do cruiser easy. He looks really soft at heavy.

Can’t see a 6’ 6” guy easily making cruiserweight, I seem to remember he looked a leaner in the ams but was still at Superheavy

Carrying fat it doesn't nessessarily mean he’s way above his best fighting weight, it may be they need to change his diet.

Yep it seems just rounds in the bag, only he and his team know what he's trying to do, working on, learning from them.
Thats aside he needs to get some conditioning in as he has love handles and his age that's bad.

He'll gain muscle mass faster if he's taking in plenty of calories above surplus. A lot of kids in gyms are so scared of gaining fat, they barely gain any muscle either. He's doing it the right way, in my view. He'll harden up later on when he's got enough size on him.

If Hughie's going the distance with fighters to gain rounds and learning from each fight then it's not working. And I don't buy into the theory that he could knock them out but he doesn't. His record and reputation would be much greater with a high KO percentage.
You can only learn from a fight by improving on past mistakes, he still needs to tighten the guard, raising his hands a little higher to defend himself after throwing his own shots and concentrate more on keeping his feet apart. In his last two fights his guard was getting lower and lazier, either by complacency or because he's not getting punished for making these mistakes by the level of fighter he keeps fighting.
He's racking up wins & figihting regularly which is good but he's not developing as he's not worried by these opponents.
He'd be much better concentrating even more on high level sparring where he can learn from his mistakes, which will be punished by a higher level of fighter and away from the eyes of the public. Then come back after a couple of months and put his new techniques into action. At least then when he steps up a level his flaws will be ironed out and not exposed.

Predominantly at his cousin's camps. He's in a comfort zone and needs to branch out.
He's winning and fighting regularly but his power is definitely lacking even at the low level he's at now & his guard placement is worryingly low. Also his stamina at present would be exposed if he stepped in with a fighter like McDermott. I worry he's gonna get to a point where his record makes him look much more experienced and knowlegable than he actually is, then a troubling loss to a moderate level fighter & psychological blow could be on the cards, similar in vein to Price.

I agree with this. I would respectfully suggest Hughie's fans look at the video of his last fight, with the sound off (its crap sound anyway) and see what you think.

I think it's great that he is looking to get as many fights in as possible. At the moment I haven't seen anything which convinces me that he is anything special, but it's early days yet. I've been amazed at some of the hype which already surrounds him and don't really see how it is justified. I've heard people refer to his gold medal at yhe Junior Olympics (or is it from the World's) but it shouldn't be forgotten that Roman Greenberg picked up a silver medal at the World Junior Championships and he didn't make much of an impact in the pros. I think it's a breath of fresh air to see such a young heavyweight so active and I will watch his progress with interest.

If you look at his most recent fight, and then imagine the required improvement needed for him to operate at world level, I think more time is going to be needed. It would be tragic to rush a good promising talent just to try to beat Tyson's record. With all due respect to Hughie, Mike Tyson was more advanced by this stage.

I'm no boxing trainer but when you see top fighters maintain their pose, stance and composure from the 1st bell to the last, and then you see a novice like Hughie swinging, throwing himself off balance, ambling around and doing it again and again for six rounds against a trailhorse, you are reminded that he is indeed a raw novice. Best of luck to him, and I hope the preoccupation with staying busy isn't the be-all and end all - he should be implementing the lessons learned in the gym every time he fights.

And? Price is British and Commonwealth champion and an Olympic medallist, Hughie hasn't been past 6 rounds, is 19 years old and learning his trade. Despite all of that, I'd still give him at least a punchers chance against Price.

His father claims he has been ill and therefore not boxing at full capacity of late hence his recent lacklustre showings.
