Agreed. I have a signed copy. Queued for hours in Leeds 22 or so years ago to shake his hand, get a photo, and the book signed. The man has the most awesome presence imaginable, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. It was like meeting God in person.

just read the ron lyle autobiography really good,bought the life and crimes of don king,just read 1st few chapters upto now,really good as well

Hi all, newbie to this forum but have read quite a few books on the sport. My top ten in no particular order ......

1/ Hands Of Stone (Duran)
2/ The Hitman (Hearns)
3/ Unforgivable Blackness (rise and fall of Jack Johnson)
4/ The Great Black Hope (Joe Louis)
5/ The Big Fight (Ray Leonard)
6/ Dark Destroyer (Benn)
7/ Night Train (Sonny Liston)
8/ Frank (Bruno)
9/ Top 100 Boxers (Bert Sugar)
10/ The Killings Of Stanley Ketchel

The last one about Ketchell is written as if its a fictional novel using anecdotes and press reports to build the story on but it's basically a biography of Ketchell and although sceptical to start with I thought it was a great book, read it very quickly. Also, I read the Johnson book and then the Joe Louis book afterwards as it seemed appropriate to read them in chronological order, both very good.

In his Sun Column today allegedly says he is releasing his autobiography in the New Year, should be an interesting read as he says he will say what really happened between him and Mike Tyson

He had one scheduled for release over 10 years ago but it was pulled due to potential legal problems I believe.

what was your opinion on This Bloody Mary James? I finished it the other week. It was enjoyable. Very funny in places. Have you read Twelve Grand by same author? Also very clever.
I think there's a boxing trainer in Bloody Mary who comes on this forum and posts. From Sheffield. Surname wasn't given in book - not sure why as others were. It's a weird mix of fiction, based on fact if that makes sense!

Thought it was a great insight into the murky world of boxing and written with great panache.

Dark Trade is another fantastic book in that vein.

Standing eight - Jesus Chavez' autobiograpy is also a terrific read.

A Fighters Heart is a quality read as is the follow up a Fighters Mind although the focus is all fighting sports rather than just boxing

The Shadows of Boxing: Prince Naseem And Those He Left Behind - by Geoffrey Beattie.

Great book.

I've heard Dark Trade is meant to be good.
Not heard of the Chavez book but he released a film four or 5 years ago, like a docu, that was very good.

I own it. Nice book. Seems completely different from what he serves up in his Sunday newspaper column most weeks.

I remember being really disappointed with this as I thought it pretty much just lifted what he'd written in 'On The Ropes'.

sugar ray leonard was also good.

I enjoyed Eubanks, but was a big fan. Whilst I was a holyfield fan, I found his book quite dull.

I've read tons of them over the year, but without doubt the best one I've read is.....
