I dont think Froch is the same fighter mentally that he was when he was an amateur. McCracken has worked on the confidence in quite a big way. Also I imagine training with the GB set up, he has access to sports psychologists, etc if he wants it.
Problems with confidence tend to be deep lying, and while it can be built up, it's possible to knock it back again because it's difficult to remove the problem. It's like an alcoholic, you can stop them from drinking, but they're still alcoholic and if they relapse, they will drink heavily again.
