At that point, look at Groves, though the angle is from behind and not in front. He is leaning forward with his hands completely down. This is the crucial moment for me. Yes, he should have been given a standing eight count, but watch that piece of footage a few times and you can see why Foster decided to stop the fight in a split second decision.
I agree. Just seen it for the first time. It doesn't really matter if you've Sugar Ray Leonarded your opponent for 8 or 9 rounds if your head's getting knocked from side to side and you can't defend against it.
The only thing is tho that I'm not sure if Groves stopped because Froch made him, or because he thought the ref was splitting them apart...I suspect he was unable to defend himself. Groves did something similar in round 8 and earlier in the fight he shipped 3 punches without defending himself, prompting Watt and Co. to suggest Foster had said "stop boxing".

I don't care for Froch or his camp but he's a tough, sinewy fighter, tough as gristle who through something purely genetic in my opinion copes well with getting hit in the face. It must be very hard to fight that for 12 full rounds. Froch has got the "W". He should retire, if he goes back for more of that he's a fool in my eyes.

Also - side question - why is Froch unable to get Ward back into the ring?? I know what we all think about that match up but Froch has 2 belts - surely Ward would want to relieve him of those, no?

How many big punches did Froch even land cleanly in the final sequence?

It seemed to me that Groves was still making him miss and throwing back; you can see Groves with his hands up and grabbing Froch around 1:40 of the round, he ducks under Froch's shot at 1:34 or so, he's punching in combos during that time, and his hands are up in the final seconds until he pushes Froch away and Foster grabs him. Certainly not a defenceless fighter imo.

Aside from the fact that Groves was actually doing fairly well in the round prior to being in trouble, he probably took only 3-4 good shots in the entire final sequence, and he doesn't lean forward with his hands down until Foster grabs him. Cannot believe anyone would try to defend that.
That's exactly what I saw. I've watched it loads of times. The intimation from the OP is that Groves arms' drop because he's unable to defend himself and then the ref stops it. That's patently untrue. Groves is still fighting back, then Foster jumps in then his arms drop. Big difference. Carl Froch is totally blameless, Howard Foster made a very poor decision and the OP appears to be trying to defend the indefensible.

agree 100% That's the first time I've watched it again since Saturday. And it still looks just as bad. I cannot understand how anyone objective can try to justify it. Froch was flailing but not landing a lot. Terrible, terrible stoppage.

The video just clarified more of the case that it was a premature stoppage... groves was hit mostly around the arms if you watch he probably got caught with 2 meaningful shots and at the start of the ninth froch was buzzed... and foster jumps in ... ask yourself would you have called that a premature stoppage if that was kessler instead of groves?

I don't have to be a fan of any boxer to be disgusted with horrible stoppages, and it's not like I'm brooding over it night and day.
i am not trying to rationalise anything. i am merely stating what i said before. at the point i mention, groves has his hands down. if people cant see that, then they need an eyesight check lol

you clearly haven't read my posts and it seems to me that you are willfully miss understanding my thread.
i will say it again, IN NO WAY DOES IT EXCUSE THE DECISION. in my eyes it was wrong. however, it PERHAPS makes it more understandable
look at my thread entitled froch vs groves my opinion .........and you will see that i didnt agree with fosters decision . groves is clearly not fighting when his hands drop and they do drop down. look at his body language

no one is justifying it, just trying to find a reason for why the decision was made. if you cant nuance a debate from right or wrong, wha is the point ot of a page like this

the damage shot was done around 15 or so seconds before the stoppage. froch stood still and launched a swinging right and it caught groves on the temple
maybe foster stopped it because he could then watch the championship highlights on the bbc. i am just trying to determine why, not justify it

it may be hard to swallowbut a lot of this has some pro groves, anti froch sentiment to it, you can almost taste it. boxing is tribal, people pick sides. people can say they are neutral, but they wouldn't get as wound up if that was the case

I was neutral before the fight as i didnt like the way they both acted in all honesty ... however George really surprised me and he has a massive future in front of him and Froch has had a massive career .... but foster ruined one of the best British fights and what didnt help Froch is the way he acted in the post fight interview, he angered me and a lot of other people .... when i saw froch leave the the Manchester arena it didnt look like the man who had won it looked like the man that got away with a lucky touch... the same thing as when Bradley beat Manny... Bradley wasnt a judge but when he talked like he won the fight in post match interviews that angered people...

I am trying to shed light on events so i will ask the question again if that was kessler instead of groves would you have called that a premature stoppage?

totally agree mate
and yes, kessler wouldn't have been stopped
froch knew he was getting beaten up and eveyone else knows that, so its damaged his pride
he said he was pleased with his performance , but it was woefull. fair play, he came back, but people think groves won because he was out classing carl just prior to the stoppage
froch looked like a beaten man after the fight

No, he's not leaning forward with his hands completely down when Foster decides to step in, you should have gone to specsavers.

Best video by far of the stoppage:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x17m4w ... page_sport

0.45 - 0.50 he is rocking and rolling.

I hoped it would go a further 20 seconds personally.

But if Froch forced the stoppage then he has done his job. Feel for George though.

That Dailymotion video shows Groves firing back (even tagging Froch during the exchange), his faculties are ensuring he is also covering up and taking shots on the gloves. His hands are NOT down and he is NOT a fighter who is 'unable to defend himself'. In real time yes the exchange cannot be analysed like that I appreciate - but its clear what a shocking decision it is at any speed.
Benn, Eubank, Collins, Carl The Cat, and the like would never have had a career if fights were stopped in such a manner.

All valid points.

I think in the interest of fairness, Groves should have been afforded chance to either fire-back or go down and then regroup and get back up again.

On the dailymotion video, Groves clearly slumps forward and drops his hands on 49 seconds !! It's quite clear.............

That video was in slow motion and so the referee doesn't have that advantage. I say again, that it doesn't justify the decision, but IT DOES make it more understandable. If people are saying he wasn't slumped slightly forward and dropped his hands on 49 seconds, even if its for a short period of time, then they have other agenda's lol. Anyway, it's getting boring now, so if people tthink Groves wa s 100% ok, was going to win the fight, knock Froch out and Foster was crap or paid off, great stuff, all power to you.

On the Dailymotion video at 1.06 you can see Groves looking straight at Froch as he is stopped and he looks fine. No sign of Foster keeping him on his feet. Not saying he wouldnt have been Ko'd 10 seconds later but he deserved his chance to prove otherwise.

You've got the nerve to call me a prick yet your still banging on when your so far of rhe mark I'm actually embarrassed for you.

Let me spell it out, Groves was fighting back, swinging almost as frequently as Froch. Froch, in this exchange, and for the first time since the opening bell landed his first real clean telling punches, he got the better of tbis exchange but Groves was defending, was fighting back and was landing his own shots. There is no indication he was in any serious trouble.

Now, here is where you go wrong. Froch grapples with Groves and at the end of the exchange puts his right arm over and around Groves head pulling him forward and down, Groves goes with it and this is exactly when the ref steps in to stop it. Groves obviously thinks the ref is breaking them up again as Froch has been fighting dirty all night and the ref breaking up the grappling every round. THATS WHY GROVES DROPPED HIS HANDS, BECAUSE THE REF STEPPED IN TO SEPERATE THEM.

As it turned out the fool was actually stopping the fight.

You still dont get it though, do you.

Yes you are a prick, just read back your post to me initially about wasting five minutes of your life and that my post should be deleted etc. Childish in the extreme, but your one of a number of people on sites like this that have issues in real life and so come on a site like this looking for an argument. In the real world people have opinions, but on here you aren't allowed to have that. If you take an opposing view, you are a moron by default according to you lol. The fact that you take it so seriously say's a lot. Your view is no more correct than mine or anyone else's, including the referee, who was in the ring, unlike you. Yet you are so sure of what happenned and everyone who doesn't agree with you is completely and utterly wrong. Don't be embarressed for me, be embaressed for yourself, that you actually come on a site like this on a regular basis, trying to pass yourself off as a boxing genius lol.

You see it differently to me. I see Groves momentarily stunned dropping his hands and leaning forward. You describe events that are slowed down to milli seconds. You wouldn't have been able to describe what you did on the night of the fight and when it happenned and that is my point. Foster didn't have any hindsight, any slowed down camera footage. He saw what he thought was Groves in serious trouble, with his hands dropped etc and made the decision in a split second. However, YOU STILL DON'T GET IT DO YOU !! My point is that i didn't agree with the stoppage. I merely said that seeing this footage could PERHAPS make Foster's decision more understandable and that being from Foster's point of view. Ask a thousand people and they will all say something different. You however, can't just say that you disagree. Oh no, you have to go on about post deletion and wasting five minutes of your life. You HAVE to be derogatory. Why ? Because you probably aren't that happy in real life, have issues and so are looking for a ruck with someone on a naff boxing website !! Now, that is embarressing lol
